The first handheld cellular phone was publicly demonstrated by Motorola on April 3, 1973. The first commercially available portable handheld cell phone came later: the Smithsonian identifies Motorola’s DynaTAC, whose 8000X model received U.S. FCC approval in 1983 and became available to consumers in 1984. Both dates are called “first” because they mark different milestones.
What does “first mobile phone” mean?
“Mobile phone” can mean different things depending on whether the focus is a phone used while traveling, a handheld cellular handset, a demonstration, a commercial sale or the opening of a mobile network. The 1973 milestone is about a handheld cellular phone and its system being demonstrated. The 1983–1984 milestones concern regulatory approval and consumer availability of a commercial handset. Network openings are a separate part of the story.
| Milestone | Date | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Working DynaTAC prototype | February 1973 | Motorola says it had produced a working portable-phone prototype. |
| Public handheld cellular demonstration | April 3, 1973 | Motorola publicly demonstrated its portable cellular telephone and system; the ITU credits Martin Cooper with the first demonstration call using a handheld cell phone in 1973. |
| Commercial mobile network in Japan | 1979 | The ITU lists this as a commercial network opening, not the launch of a handheld handset. |
| Commercial mobile networks in Nordic countries | 1981 | The ITU lists these network openings as another distinct milestone. |
| DynaTAC 8000X U.S. FCC approval | September 21, 1983 | Motorola dates the model’s approval to this day; approval was not the same as consumer availability. |
| DynaTAC 8000X consumer availability | 1984 | Motorola says the handset became available to consumers. |
Was the 1973 phone the first mobile phone?
It is accurate to call the 1973 DynaTAC demonstration a landmark for the first handheld cellular phone demonstration. Motorola says a working prototype existed by February 1973 and that the phone and system were publicly demonstrated on April 3. The International Telecommunication Union likewise credits Motorola engineer Martin Cooper with the first demonstration call using a handheld cell phone in 1973. The sources do not make 1973 the consumer release date.

For a broader definition of mobile telephone that includes vehicle-based equipment, the handheld milestone is too narrow to establish the first mobile telephone of every kind. The dates here distinguish the best-documented handheld cellular milestones from network launches; they do not settle the earliest vehicle-based telephone milestone.

Which phone was first commercially available?
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes the Motorola DynaTAC as the first commercially available portable handheld cell phone. Motorola’s timeline gives the DynaTAC 8000X’s U.S. FCC approval date as September 21, 1983, and says it became available to consumers in 1984. These are separate steps: regulatory approval came before consumer availability.
Motorola gives the DynaTAC’s weight as 28 ounces (794 grams). That figure is from the company’s historical timeline; the page does not state a publication date.

Why do 1979 and 1981 appear in accounts of mobile-phone history?
Those years refer to commercial mobile networks, not the first commercially available handheld phone. The ITU lists commercial mobile networks opening in Japan in 1979 and in Nordic countries in 1981. A network can begin operating before a commercially available handheld cellular model is established, so these dates do not contradict the later DynaTAC consumer-availability milestone.
