Real-money trading (RMT) in World of Warcraft generally means exchanging money or other value outside the game for in-game gold, items, or services. Blizzard’s WoW Token is the sanctioned exception: eligible players can buy one in the in-game Shop and sell it for gold through the in-game Auction House. Third-party gold sales and paid in-game services are different transactions and can fall under Blizzard’s commercial-use restrictions.
What counts as real-money trading?
The key question is what is being exchanged and where the payment comes from. If someone pays cash or other outside value to receive WoW gold, items, or an in-game service, that is generally RMT. A transaction paid entirely with in-game currency is not automatically an exchange for real-world money, though Blizzard has separate rules for organized service providers.
Blizzard’s End User License Agreement (EULA) describes prohibited commercial activity broadly. Examples include gathering in-game currency, items, or resources for sale outside Blizzard’s platform or games; providing in-game services in exchange for payment; and commercial solicitation through or within Blizzard’s platform. See the Blizzard End User License Agreement for its terms.

How common WoW transactions differ
| Transaction | Payment and channel | How Blizzard’s published rules treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Sell a Shop-bought WoW Token | Buy the Token with real money in the in-game Shop, then list it in the in-game Auction House for gold. | Blizzard explicitly supports this exchange where Tokens are available. Eligibility varies by game mode, region, and account. Blizzard’s WoW Token support page. |
| Buy gold or items from an external seller | Pay cash or other outside value to a third party for game assets. | This is distinct from the Token route and falls within the EULA’s outside-platform commercial restrictions. Blizzard has also described third-party gold services as harmful. EULA; Blizzard’s Token announcement. |
| Pay someone outside the game for an in-game service | Cash or other outside value in exchange for a boost, carry, or similar service. | The EULA includes providing in-game services in exchange for payment among commercial uses. |
| Buy or sell an activity with in-game currency | Players or guilds use in-game tools and currency to arrange the transaction. | Blizzard’s January 2022 policy says it does not restrict individuals or guilds transacting in-game items or activities for in-game currency, but does prohibit organizations offering specified services. Is the WoW Token considered RMT?
It involves real money, but it is not the same as buying gold from an outside seller. Blizzard explicitly authorizes the Shop-to-Auction-House exchange: a player buys a Token with real money and sells it in-game for gold. Blizzard described the Token as a sanctioned way to exchange real money for gold in its March 2, 2015 announcement. That is Blizzard’s characterization of its own system; the relevant practical distinction is that the Token transaction takes place through Blizzard’s designated game systems.

Are gold-paid boosts or player trades allowed?
Do not treat every in-game-currency transaction as an outside-money exchange, or assume that every gold-paid service is allowed. Blizzard’s January 2022 organized-services policy prohibits organizations that offer boosting, matchmaking, escrow, or similar services, including services sold for in-game gold. The same announcement says individuals and guilds may continue using in-game tools to transact in-game items or activities for in-game currency.
The distinction is the provider and arrangement, not just whether gold changes hands. Blizzard’s published exception for individuals and guilds does not establish that every boosting arrangement paid in gold is permitted, nor does it erase the restrictions on organizations.

Token availability depends on WoW mode and account
Blizzard’s current support article lists WoW Tokens as available in World of Warcraft and WoW Classic Progression, and unavailable in WoW Classic Era/Hardcore and Season of Discovery. It also lists account, regional, and other eligibility restrictions. In WoW Classic Progression, the support page says Token redemption is limited to game time rather than Battle.net Balance. These mechanics can change, so check the live support article for your version, region, and account before relying on availability or redemption options.

Blizzard’s published materials do not settle every possible intermediary, payment instrument, or arrangement mixing in-game currency with outside value. For a specific case, identify who provides the service, what each party gives, whether any payment or value leaves Blizzard’s systems, and whether the provider is an organization. Then compare those facts with Blizzard’s current EULA and organized-services policy; neither source provides a universal ruling for every hypothetical.
