Keep the written licence or permission for every track, including its specific recording and composition rights, and make sure it expressly covers the YouTube livestream and any archived replay. Preserve the licence terms, payment evidence, Content ID allowlist confirmation, and records that show when the music played. These documents help demonstrate what permission you obtained; they do not guarantee that YouTube will not issue a claim or interrupt a stream.
What to keep for each track
Create a dated file for each piece of music and retain an unchanged original plus a backup. The file should let you connect the track heard in the broadcast to the exact grant of rights you received.

- Track identity: title, artist or composer, exact version or recording, and catalogue or asset ID if available.
- Written grant: signed licence, permission email, or other written authorization. Keep the licensor’s legal name and any statement of its authority to grant the rights.
- Rights covered: identify whether the permission covers the sound recording (the master) and the underlying composition. Do not assume permission for one automatically covers the other.
- Uses and limits: confirm the grant covers YouTube livestreaming and, if you will leave the stream available, the archived replay or VOD. Record its terms for monetization, editing or looping, promotional clips, attribution, territory, channel, duration, audience limits, exclusions, and revocation.
- Payment: invoice, receipt, and proof of payment if the licence was paid.
- Content ID correspondence: save your request for the rights holder to allowlist the correct channel and its written confirmation. Keep any instructions or limits attached to that confirmation.
- Broadcast record: note the livestream URL, date and time, and approximate timestamps where the track is audible.
- Changing terms: save screenshots or exports of the licence dashboard as it appeared when you obtained the rights, along with later renewal notices or changes. Check current terms before reusing the track.
- YouTube records: retain warnings, Content ID claims, dispute submissions, and messages showing how each issue was resolved.
Why the licence must cover both music rights
A song can involve distinct rights in its recording and its composition. YouTube describes master-use rights as typically held by the record label that recorded the song; composers, publishers, or collecting societies may administer rights in the underlying musical work, including public-performance rights. A licensor may control only one layer, so check what it can authorize and whether the grant covers your intended use. YouTube explains the distinction between sound recordings and musical compositions.

That is a reason to check both layers, not proof that a particular society’s blanket licence covers your online stream. Confirm the repertoire, territory, platform, use, and archive rights in the actual grant. See the Copyright Office handbook.

Make the permission match the broadcast
Before using a track, compare your plan with the wording of its licence. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights for the live content, including music rights, and also address archived content. The terms refer to rights from artists, labels, publishers (including public-performance licences), and other royalty participants. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
- Check whether the permission is for a live transmission, a replay, or both. A licence that covers one should not be assumed to cover the other.
- Check whether it covers your channel, the relevant territories, monetization, and the period when you plan to use the track.
- Check attribution, editing, looping, promotional-use restrictions, and any conditions or exclusions.
- If collaborators or performers contributed to music you created, retain the agreements that establish what each person authorized. Original music can reduce third-party licensing issues, but it does not eliminate rights or contract terms held by collaborators.
For Indian creators, the Copyright Act, 1957 defines communication to the public broadly, addresses infringement involving exercise of exclusive rights without a licence or contrary to licence conditions, and permits owners or authorized agents to grant licences in writing. The available official sources do not establish a universal rule that every online livestream either needs or is exempt from an additional Indian public-performance or broadcast licence. The answer can depend on the rights, repertoire, licence, territory, stream circumstances, and applicable law. For a high-stakes broadcast or active dispute, consult an India-qualified copyright lawyer. Read the Copyright Act, 1957.

Content ID can still affect a licensed livestream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder image and warn you to stop using the content; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. YouTube advises licensed creators to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that allowlist, even a licensed stream may be interrupted, including a stream restricted to certain territories. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains scanning and allowlisting.

That is why the licence should cover the replay as well as the live transmission, and why you should keep the resulting claim and resolution correspondence with the track’s file.

Choose music by rights scope, not just by label
“Free,” “royalty-free,” or a credit line in a video description does not by itself establish that you have rights for a livestream and replay. Use the actual terms applicable to the particular track and planned use. YouTube identifies its Audio Library as a recommended source for safe music, but retain the applicable track terms and verify that they cover your intended use. YouTube Audio Library information.
Do not treat Creator Music as livestream clearance: YouTube’s current FAQ says Creator Music does not support live content. Its usage details also describe conditions for eligible long-form videos, including regional and track-specific limits. Creator Music FAQ and Creator Music usage details.

For a 24/7 YouTube stream using uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not grant music rights, so keep the licence and Content ID records described above.
