Chrome for Android offers privacy and security controls that do different jobs: Incognito limits traces left on your phone, Safe Browsing checks for threats, Chrome sync can save selected information to your Google Account, and Google Password Manager can make credentials available across devices. None of these controls is a general guarantee of online anonymity. What Chrome stores or sends depends on the feature and the settings you choose.

What Incognito mode does—and does not hide
Incognito starts a separate Chrome browsing session. While it is open, Chrome temporarily keeps cookies and site data so sites work and you can navigate. After you close all Incognito tabs, Chrome says it removes that session data and does not retain a record of the visited sites in Chrome history. Downloads and bookmarks remain on the device. This is a local privacy measure, not online invisibility. A website you visit, Google services used on that website, and a network operator—such as an employer, school, or internet provider—may still observe activity. Incognito does not promise to hide your IP address or browsing from those parties.
On supported Android configurations, Chrome can lock Incognito tabs when you leave the app. That helps keep someone else using your phone from opening those tabs; it does not change what websites or networks can observe.

How Safe Browsing checks for threats
Chrome’s Safe Browsing setting offers different protection levels. The trade-off is stronger threat detection versus sharing more information with Google. Find it in Chrome → More → Settings → Privacy and security → Safe Browsing. Google recommends keeping some level of protection enabled. Google Chrome Help.
Standard Protection
Chrome periodically stores recent unsafe-site and download list data on your device and checks against local information first. If it cannot resolve a site locally, it may send an obfuscated portion of the URL to Google through a privacy server intended to hide your IP address. Standard Protection is therefore not entirely offline, and this description does not mean every visited URL is always sent.

Chrome may also send a report when it detects suspicious page behavior or an action. Google gives the example of checking whether a newly used site may be phishing when you enter a saved password. Some checks may use visual features of a site.
Enhanced Protection
Enhanced Protection adds real-time analysis and sends more activity information to Google. Google says this can include visited URLs, small samples of page content, downloads, extension activity, and system information. If Chrome detects suspicious behavior, it may send obfuscated or full URLs and pieces of page content directly to Google Safe Browsing.

Google describes the added protection as helping detect potentially risky sites not already known to it and enabling optional extra scans of suspicious downloads. The added information sharing is part of that protection trade-off.
Turning Safe Browsing off
Google says turning the feature off removes protection against sites that steal information or install harmful software. If you want less information sharing, compare the available protection levels rather than assuming that all checks work the same way.

What Chrome sign-in and sync save
You can use Chrome while signed out; bookmarks, passwords, and other Chrome information can remain on the device. Signing in lets you save selected information to a Google Account and access it on other devices signed in to that account. Depending on your choices, saved items may include bookmarks, reading list, passwords, payment information, identity, contact or travel details, and preferences. Chrome sync and Google’s use of account activity for personalization are related but separate settings. Google says Chrome history saved to your account may help personalize Google products, such as searches and recommendations, when Web & App Activity is enabled with the relevant Chrome subsetting. Manage sync choices and Web & App Activity separately; availability of linked-services controls may vary by location.

Chrome also offers an optional custom passphrase to encrypt certain synced data so Google cannot read that data. Google Wallet payment methods and addresses are not covered by the passphrase. Because the passphrase applies only to certain synced data, it is not accurate to treat it as a blanket statement about every item associated with your account.
How Google Password Manager handles passwords and passkeys
Google Password Manager can save passwords and passkeys for your Google Account and make them available on devices signed in to that same account. It is an optional convenience feature, not a requirement for using Chrome. On Android, its controls let you manage whether it offers to save passwords or passkeys, whether it may automatically create a passkey after password sign-in, and whether it automatically signs you in with saved credentials. Choose settings based on what you want
- To limit traces for another person using your phone: use Incognito, then close all Incognito tabs when finished. Remember that downloaded files and bookmarks remain.
- To keep threat checks enabled with less sharing than Enhanced Protection: choose Standard Protection, which still may send obfuscated URL information and reports under some conditions.
- To keep Chrome information off your Google Account: stay signed out of Chrome, or review the specific sync categories before enabling account storage.
- To use account features selectively: review Chrome sync and Web & App Activity independently, and consider whether the optional passphrase fits your needs.
- To reduce password prompts or automatic sign-in: adjust the corresponding save, passkey, and auto sign-in controls in Android’s Password Manager interface.
Chrome Help describes its goal this way: “Chrome strives to set safe defaults so you can safely browse the internet using Chrome without being a privacy or security expert.” That is Google’s stated aim, not a claim that every feature avoids sending data or that one configuration fits every user.
