Chrome Incognito mainly limits what Chrome keeps on your device after you close the session. It does not make you anonymous to websites or invisible to your internet provider, employer, or school. Google puts it plainly: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.”
What does Chrome Incognito actually hide?
Incognito is a local privacy feature. After you close every Incognito window, Chrome says it does not retain a record of the sites you visited or the session’s cookies and site data. While the session is open, Chrome uses site data and cookies so websites and navigation can work; those session items are removed when the session ends. See Google Chrome Help’s Incognito guidance.
In practical terms, Incognito can keep someone who later uses the same browser profile from finding those visits in Chrome history. It does not erase every trace of your activity from the device, and it does not stop others from observing the connection while it happens.
Who can still see or connect your activity?
Websites and online services
Sites you visit may observe your activity. Signing in makes the connection especially direct: the site knows which account is being used and can associate activity with it. Chrome does not automatically sign you into accounts in Incognito, but you can sign in yourself. Even without signing in, websites and services may collect information. Google also says it does not tell websites that you are browsing in Incognito. Google’s explanation of how Incognito works covers these limits.

Your employer, school, or internet provider
Google says websites and organizations that manage your network—such as your employer, school, or internet service provider—may be able to observe activity in Incognito. Parental tracking software may also monitor activity. Whether a particular observer can see details depends on the network and monitoring setup, so Incognito should not be treated as a way to bypass workplace, school, or household monitoring.
What remains after you close Incognito?
- Downloaded files: Files you download remain on the device until you delete them.
- Bookmarks and reading-list items: Anything you save remains available in regular browsing sessions.
- Other observers’ records: Incognito does not remove activity that a visited site or network observer may have recorded.
Incognito therefore does not mean that Chrome saves nothing at all. It uses session data temporarily, and items you deliberately download or save persist.

How to end an Incognito session
Close every Incognito window. Tabs and windows in Incognito share the same session, so closing one window does not end it if another remains open. Once all Incognito windows are closed, Chrome removes the session’s cookies and site data and does not retain the visited-site record in its browsing history.

- It does not hide your activity from the websites you visit.
- It does not conceal your activity from a network operator or internet provider that may be able to observe it.
- It does not prevent a site from associating activity with you when you sign in.
- It is not a promise of anonymity, a VPN, an encrypted tunnel, or malware protection.
Chrome’s desktop guidance says third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito and can be temporarily allowed for a site. Cookie behavior and labels can change with Chrome versions; this setting does not make Incognito a general-purpose tracking blocker.

Incognito is Chrome’s name, not a universal browser rule
These details describe Chrome. Other browsers use different names for private browsing and may handle session data differently. On a work- or school-managed Chrome device, administrators can also control whether Incognito is available and apply browsing policies. Google’s Chrome Enterprise guidance on allowing private browsing describes administrator controls and distinguishes Incognito from Guest and Ephemeral modes.
