App choice, Android defaults, account sync, and cloud backup are separate controls. Before removing your Google Account from a phone, check where each kind of data is stored and confirm it is available elsewhere.
Replacing an app is different from changing your Google Account
A phone can have a replacement app installed while the original Google Account remains signed in. In that case, account data may continue syncing even if you stop opening the Google app. Conversely, removing the account from the phone removes its associated data from that device—but does not delete the online Google Account or its data from Google’s services.
Google says that when you add an account, associated email, contacts, calendar events, and other data sync to the device. When you remove it, associated data such as email, contacts, and settings is removed from the device. See Google’s Android account instructions.
- Replace an app: Use another app for a task. This alone does not transfer or erase the data held by the original provider.
- Change a default or handler: Tell Android or an app which app to use for a supported action. Available controls depend on the device and Android version.
- Disable an app: Turn off an app that came with the phone, where the device permits it. This is not the same as removing the account or deleting account data.
- Turn off sync: Stop selected data from syncing; this does not uninstall the app.
- Remove the Google Account: Remove its associated data from that phone. This is a separate action from deleting the account online.
How do you change Android defaults?
There is no single universal “replace Google apps” switch. Android’s menus vary by manufacturer and release, and the available official instructions cover specific operations rather than every default-app setting. Check your phone’s Settings and the replacement app’s documentation for the relevant default or link-opening control.

Changing a setting inside an app
Some choices belong to the app, not Android-wide defaults. For example, Google documents changing the search engine within Chrome. That changes Chrome’s search behavior; it does not replace the browser or change the Google Account that may be signed in.
Disabling a preinstalled app
Google documents disabling some preinstalled apps, including Chrome, Gmail, and Calendar, when the device allows it. Manufacturer changes can alter the steps. Google also warns that disabling a system app may cause other apps to misbehave and can delete data associated with that app. Treat this as app-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every preinstalled app can be safely disabled or uninstalled. What happens to sync when you use another app?
Google apps generally sync data with the Google Account signed in to them. Google provides controls for managing sync for individual Google apps, while sync support and behavior in other apps vary. A replacement app may connect to a different provider, display data from an existing account, or require you to import it; those behaviors are specific to the app and service. Do not assume the replacement contains the same data just because it performs a similar task.

Turning off auto-sync does not uninstall an app. It changes syncing behavior. Google notes that app-sync settings and the effect on non-Google apps can differ; its sync guidance describes this variation.
If you want to read an existing mailbox in another email client, check that client’s supported account types and the mailbox provider’s server requirements. Android’s account-add flow includes Exchange, IMAP, and POP3 options, but compatibility and setup requirements depend on the service.
Replacing a Google app also does not by itself establish that Google Account activity collection has stopped. Account activity and personalization controls are separate. Google’s guidance says Web & App Activity may still save some app-activity data even when an app is not allowed to use the on-device personalization index. Where are your contacts and other data stored?
Before switching, identify the owner and location of each data category. Contacts are a common source of confusion because they may be stored in a Google Account, another cloud account, on the SIM, or only on the device.
Contacts
Contacts saved to a signed-in Google Account sync with that account and remain there unless they are manually deleted. Device-only contacts may be lost if the phone is lost or damaged. SIM and device contacts can require separate import or backup steps; whether device/SIM contacts are automatically backed up depends on the phone’s make and model. Google’s Android transfer guidance and device and SIM contact instructions explain the available handling.
Email, calendars, photos, files, messages, and app settings
Check each category in the service that currently holds it. A calendar app may display events from a Google Account without moving them to another provider. An alternate email client may access a mailbox without transferring ownership of the messages. Photos, files, messages, and app-specific settings can have different storage and export paths. Confirm that the replacement provider actually has the data you need before removing the original account.

What does Android backup include—and what might it miss?
Google says Android backup may include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, SMS, and MMS. Additional information can be backed up through specific Google apps. That does not guarantee a complete copy of every app’s private data: Google explicitly cautions that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Restore behavior can also vary by Android version.
The backup is uploaded to Google’s servers. Google says data is encrypted in transit, and some data receives additional encryption using the device’s screen lock. Google Photos media and media received through a carrier’s MMS are exceptions to that additional screen-lock encryption. See Google’s Android backup and restore details.
Google currently states that a Google Account has up to 15 GB of storage at no charge and that a Google One backup may take up to 24 hours. These are Google-published service details, not guarantees of a particular backup time or permanent terms. Check the current backup status and contents on your own device before relying on them.

Deleting backup data is different from uninstalling an app. Google warns that deleting all data from the account dashboard can permanently delete device and WhatsApp backup data for that account. Do not delete it unless you understand what is included and have another copy where needed.
A safer order for switching apps
- Map your data: For contacts, calendar, email, photos, files, messages, and app settings, identify the account or device storage that holds the original.
- Check backups: Confirm the latest backup status and inspect what it covers. Do not assume an app’s private data will restore.
- Set up the replacement: Install it, sign in to the appropriate provider, and verify that the needed data is present there—not merely visible through the old account.
- Test sync and notifications: Make a small, reversible change where appropriate and confirm it reaches the intended service. Check that notifications arrive as expected.
- Choose what to change: Once verified, decide whether to disable the old app, change an app-specific setting, turn off a sync category, or remove the Google Account from the phone. These actions have different effects.
- Keep or delete backups deliberately: Avoid deleting account backup data until you have checked its contents and understand that deletion may be permanent.
Menu names, backup options, and available controls differ across Android versions and manufacturers. Work-managed devices may also restrict backup. For any replacement, verify its own import, sync, storage, privacy, notification, and restore behavior rather than assuming it matches Google’s app.
