When home security AI moves to the edge, some of the analysis, such as recognizing a person or a pet, runs on the camera or a nearby hub instead of on a remote cloud server. That can reduce how much video is sent away for that analysis and may cut some network delay. It does not, on its own, mean recordings stay in the house, that every feature works without internet, or that no cloud processing is involved. Those answers depend on the specific model, feature, hub, and subscription.
Processing and storage are separate questions
Most confusion about “edge AI” comes from treating two different things as one. Where detection runs and where recordings are kept are independent choices. A camera may classify motion locally while uploading full clips to a server. Another system may store events on a local hub while sending some analysis to the cloud. When you evaluate a product, ask four things separately: where detection runs, where clips are stored, what leaves the home, and which features require an account or subscription.
What edge processing changes
Microsoft’s general guidance on choosing between cloud and local AI models describes the basic trade-off. Local processing can reduce latency because data does not have to travel over the network before a result is produced. The same guidance notes that local performance is constrained by the device’s own capabilities, while cloud resources can support larger models, with network communication adding delay. Those are general computing principles, not home-camera measurements. No controlled benchmark in the sources compares alert speed for edge and cloud cameras, so a faster alert is a likely benefit of the design, not a measured guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
The same principle applies to accuracy and security claims. The sources reviewed here do not compare detection accuracy between local and cloud systems, and a device that processes data locally still needs security updates and sound configuration. Local processing changes where the work happens; it does not by itself make a system more accurate or more secure.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Will it still work if the internet goes down?
“Works offline” has to be checked feature by feature. A local model may keep detecting without internet access, but other functions often depend on connectivity:
- Local detection: may continue without internet if the model runs on the camera or hub. Confirm this for your specific model.
- Remote notifications and app viewing: generally need a connection to reach your phone.
- Cloud history and later upload: may be delayed until the device reconnects, depending on the product.
- Account functions: sign-in, sharing, and service-based features can stop while offline.
Google’s Nest documentation illustrates the distinction. Nest cameras need Wi-Fi and the Nest service to upload video to the cloud. Some models keep events internally while offline and upload them after reconnecting, but that internal buffer is limited and not accessible to the user. Keeping events on the camera during an outage is local buffering, which is a different claim from local AI inference.

Who maintains a local system
Microsoft’s guidance also points out that local-first systems move some work to the owner. With cloud services, the provider handles more of the service maintenance. With local systems, the owner may carry more responsibility for device maintenance and compatibility. For a home camera, that usually means keeping firmware current, confirming that a hub or model is supported, and understanding which updates come from the manufacturer and whether they affect the on-device model.
Do you still need a subscription?
Often, yes, for some functions. Edge features do not remove every dependency. Ring documents Ring Edge as a system configuration that works with Ring Alarm Pro and compatible cameras, and its qualifying subscription requirements apply. Nest event history depends on the model and plan. Wyze’s Edge AI is described for named models, and the page does not establish that every recording or app function is local. Check upfront hardware, any required hub, storage, and subscription terms before you buy, because the sources reviewed here do not provide a complete, comparable cost table.

How to compare real options
When you compare two systems, use the same five checks so the answers line up:
- Inference location: does detection run on the camera, on a home hub, or in the cloud?
- Recording location: are clips kept in camera memory, on a hub or network video recorder, in the cloud, or in a combination?
- Data sent off-site: is it continuous video, selected clips, thumbnails, metadata, or nothing for the feature you care about?
- Offline behavior: check detection, recording, notifications, remote viewing, and later sync separately.
- Updates and subscriptions: who supplies model and security updates, what you must maintain yourself, and which functions require a paid plan.

| Wyze | Edge AI processes on the device for named models: Wyze Cam v3 Pro, Wyze Cam v4, Wyze Cam Floodlight v2, and Wyze Floodlight Pro. Wyze AI features such as person or pet detection send data to cloud servers. | Not stated for the Edge AI path in the cited page. | Applies only to the listed models and features. Wyze’s support page was updated March 4, 2026. |
| Ring | Ring Edge enrolls compatible cameras for local processing and storage. | Local storage as part of the Ring Edge setup. | Requires Ring Alarm Pro, compatible cameras, and a qualifying subscription. Treat it as a system configuration, not a camera-only feature. |
| Google Nest | Not stated in the cited help page. | Cloud upload requires Wi-Fi and the Nest service. Some models keep events internally while offline and upload after reconnection. | Internal storage is limited and not user-accessible. Event history depends on model and plan. |
| Apple HomeKit Secure Video | Apple’s Private Cloud Compute guide describes cloud-side analysis that generates natural-language video descriptions and embeddings. | Not stated in the cited security guide. | The guide does not establish that all HomeKit Secure Video analysis happens on the device, so do not assume it does. |
Wyze and Ring show the two most common edge patterns: a model-level on-device AI feature, and a hub-based local processing and storage configuration. Nest shows that an edge-looking product can still depend on the cloud for uploads and history. Apple’s example is useful mainly as a reminder that cloud security architecture and on-device processing are separate subjects.

- Is the exact model on the manufacturer’s list of edge-capable devices?
- Does the feature you want need a hub, a bridge, or an alarm system?
- What happens to alerts and recordings during a router or internet outage, and when do they sync?
- Which subscription tier unlocks local storage, cloud history, or advanced detection?
- Does the manufacturer publish model or firmware update policies for the device?
What the current evidence does and does not establish
The official material reviewed here, dated as shown above, describes how specific products are designed to split processing and storage. It does not provide independent measurements of alert speed, detection accuracy, bandwidth savings, or privacy outcomes across camera systems, and it does not offer a verified statistic that compares edge and cloud designs. Treat any claim of universal speed, privacy, or offline capability as unproven until the specific product’s documentation confirms it for the feature you need.

The Bottom Line
Edge AI moves some analysis closer to the camera, but it is not a single switch. Confirm where detection runs, where clips are stored, what leaves the home, and which functions depend on internet access or a subscription for your exact model.
