You can reuse an old Wi-Fi router as a wired access point, wireless repeater, Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet bridge, basic network switch, or—if its hardware and firmware allow—a separate guest or IoT network. A sixth option is to use it as a network-configuration learning lab. These projects are not available on every router: check the exact model’s manual and security-update status before connecting it to your network.

Which old-router project fits your setup?

Project Ethernet cable needed? What it does Model or firmware requirement Separate network? Difficulty
Wired access point Yes, from your existing LAN Extends Wi-Fi coverage Check the manual for the supported setup and menu labels No; clients join the existing network Moderate
Wireless repeater No uplink cable Extends Wi-Fi wirelessly Compatible hardware and firmware; may require third-party firmware Usually extends the upstream network, depending on configuration Moderate to advanced
Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet bridge Only between the router and wired device Connects wired-only equipment to Wi-Fi Supported wireless-client or bridge mode Usually bridges devices onto the upstream network Moderate to advanced
Basic switch in an access-point setup Yes, for the uplink Uses available LAN ports for wired devices Router must be configured to bridge LAN and Wi-Fi traffic No Moderate
Guest or IoT network Depends on network design Places selected devices on a distinct network Firmware and hardware must support a routed network and firewall rules Yes, when correctly configured Advanced
Network-configuration lab Helpful, but not always required Lets you learn router settings and network behavior on a test setup Features vary by model; keep experiments separate from important devices Only if you deliberately configure one Beginner to advanced

The most broadly documented reuse is a wired access point. Netgate says, “Most SOHO-style wireless routers can be used as an access point if a true Access Point (AP) is not available.” (Netgate, Using External Wireless Access Points.)

1. Add Wi-Fi coverage with a wired access point

Place the spare router where you need better Wi-Fi and connect it to your existing local network with Ethernet. In the generic setup, the old router stops handing out IP addresses, receives a unique management address on the existing subnet, and connects to the network through a LAN port. Netgate’s access-point instructions describe this approach; use your router’s manual for the exact menus and settings.

  1. Connect to the spare router’s administration interface and find its LAN and DHCP settings.
  2. Disable the spare router’s DHCP server so the existing router remains responsible for assigning addresses.
  3. Assign the spare router a management IP address in the existing subnet that is not already in use. Record it so you can return to the administration page later.
  4. Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the existing network to a LAN port on the spare router. Do not use the spare router’s WAN port for this generic access-point setup.
  5. Configure the spare router’s Wi-Fi name and security settings, then connect a device and confirm it can reach the existing network.

Using the WAN port instead can put wireless clients on a separate broadcast domain and create double NAT, which can complicate access to devices and services on the main network. Router menus differ, so consult the manual for your model before making changes.

2. Try a wireless repeater when you cannot run Ethernet

A wireless repeater uses one radio connection to join an upstream access point and serves nearby clients over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. OpenWrt documents an access-point-plus-station (AP+STA) configuration pattern, but it depends on compatible hardware and firmware (OpenWrt relay configuration).

Check your router’s manual or firmware documentation for an explicitly supported repeater, relay, or AP+STA mode. A second Wi-Fi name alone does not prove that a router is repeating the upstream connection, and some configurations require third-party firmware. If you can run Ethernet, the wired access-point setup is generally more straightforward to configure.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

3. Connect a wired-only device through a Wi-Fi bridge

A supported wireless-client or bridge mode can let the old router join your Wi-Fi network and provide network access to a device connected by Ethernet. This can suit equipment that has a network port but no Wi-Fi, such as a printer or other home device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking the exact model’s manual: stock firmware may not offer this mode, and compatibility matters. OpenWrt documents bridged access-point and wireless-client configurations, but the available options depend on the device and firmware (OpenWrt relay configuration). A bridge normally connects devices to the upstream network; it does not, by itself, isolate them.

4. Reuse the LAN ports as a basic switch

In a correctly configured access-point setup, the old router’s LAN ports can provide wired connections while its Wi-Fi serves wireless devices. The LAN ports and wireless clients join the same network, so this is a way to reuse the ports—not a way to separate or secure devices from one another.

Use the LAN-to-LAN uplink and disable DHCP on the spare router as described in the access-point steps. If your goal is to isolate devices, a bridged setup is the wrong design.

5. Build a separate guest or IoT network only with proper isolation

A second Wi-Fi name is not sufficient evidence that guests or smart-home devices are isolated. A separate network requires router hardware and firmware that support a routed network and appropriate firewall rules. The right configuration depends on how the existing network is built; there is no universal recipe for an unspecified old router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using this approach, confirm that the device can create a distinct network and control traffic between that network and your main one. If the manual only describes another wireless name or an access-point mode, do not assume those features provide isolation.

6. Use it as a network-configuration learning lab

If the router lacks a useful supported operating mode, it can still be a practice device for learning its administration interface and basic network configuration. Experiment with settings only when you can restore the device and avoid disrupting connections that people depend on. A learning lab does not require exposing the router to the public internet or putting it in charge of your home network.

Keep a record of settings you change and find the model’s reset and firmware-update instructions before experimenting. Features vary, so treat this as a way to learn what your particular router can do—not a promise that it supports advanced network designs.

Check security support before putting the router back to work

Age alone does not establish whether a router is safe to connect. Check whether the manufacturer still provides security updates and whether your exact model can run current firmware. No support status can be inferred without the model, and no specific router was assessed here.
