Gemini can set alarms, start some routines, and control compatible Google Home devices—but the answer depends on which Gemini you mean. The Gemini app on an Android phone is different from Gemini for Home, the opt-in voice assistant for eligible Google speakers and displays. Neither path supports every Assistant feature or every device action.
First, distinguish the two Gemini options

These options answer different needs: use the mobile app to issue commands from your Android phone, or consider Gemini for Home if you want the assistant on eligible home speakers and displays to change.
Can Gemini set alarms?
On an Android phone
Gemini on Android can handle alarm requests. You can ask it to set an alarm or type the request. The exact experience can depend on your phone and how Gemini is configured; the cited Google Home controls guidance focuses on connected home devices rather than documenting every phone alarm behavior.

On a Google speaker or display
Google lists alarms and timers among Gemini for Home’s basic features. Its Home updates have also documented alarm-command improvements and used “Set an alarm for tomorrow morning at 6:00 am” as an example. That is a Google-provided product example, not an independent test. Google Home updates

Gemini for Home early access is not available to every home at once. Google says it will notify users when the upgrade is available to their home. Check Google’s availability and feature details
Can Gemini run Google Assistant routines?
The Gemini mobile app on Android can start some routines with a spoken or typed command, but Google does not promise support for every routine starter or action. In particular, routines that require a back-and-forth exchange—such as an action that depends on Gemini asking a follow-up question—are not supported. Google’s routine and smart-home limitations
Starting a routine is also different from creating or editing an automation. The documented mobile feature is to start supported routines; do not assume that Gemini can recreate every Assistant routine or manage every automation setting by voice.

What smart-home devices can Gemini control?
From the Gemini Android app
After connecting Google Home, Gemini can control devices available to your Google Account, including compatible:
- Lights, outlets, and switches
- Climate devices
- Curtains, blinds, and shutters
- TVs and speakers
- Appliances such as vacuums and coffee makers

From Gemini for Home
Gemini for Home provides smart-home voice control on eligible Google speakers and displays, including devices and services compatible with Google Home. Its availability is tied to Google’s rollout and supported services, rather than to the mobile app’s connection requirements.

Set up Google Home control in the Gemini app
- On an Android phone, sign in to the Gemini app with a personal Google Account. Google says work and school accounts are not supported for this connection.
- In the Gemini app, connect Google Home. Keep Activity must be turned on for the integration.
- Ask Gemini to control a device that is available through your Google Home account, then check the device itself or Google Home app to confirm the requested change occurred.
This connection is not available in Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or Live chats. Google’s documented requirements and availability are listed in its Google Home controls help page.
Important limitations and safety guidance
- Do not depend on it for safety-critical outcomes. Google warns: “Home controls are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical purposes.” It advises against relying on Gemini for requests whose failure to start or stop could cause injury or harm. Google’s safety guidance
- PIN-protected security actions may not work. The mobile app cannot complete security-device actions that require a PIN.
- Some routine steps are unsupported. A routine that depends on a follow-up exchange with Gemini may not run as expected.
- Gemini Live is not a command mode. Google says actions are not supported during a Gemini Live conversation. Leave the live conversation before issuing a command such as controlling lights or setting an event. Google’s speaker and display conversation guidance
Should you switch a home speaker from Assistant to Gemini for Home?
Gemini for Home is an opt-in upgrade for eligible speakers and displays. Google says its basic features—including smart-home controls, alarms and timers—are available at no cost. Make the switch only if you are comfortable with the consequence: once the home moves to Gemini for Home, Google says it cannot be switched back to Google Assistant. Compatible devices in that home use the new assistant. Google’s opt-in and switch-back information

What is changing on phones?
Separately from the home-speaker upgrade, a Google employee announcement dated August 6, 2026 said Google would begin removing Assistant from mobile devices on September 3, 2026, with the change expected to reach users over a few weeks.
