Paper, cardboard, selected plastic containers, glass food and beverage containers, and some metals are commonly recyclable—but the accepted list and preparation rules depend on your local program. Keep batteries, electronics, and household hazardous waste out of curbside recycling. Lithium-ion batteries in particular can ignite if they are damaged during collection or sorting.
Start with your local recycling rules
Use your city, county, or waste hauler’s current instructions as the final word on curbside collection. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s general guide to common recyclables offers useful examples, but local programs differ. A plastic resin-identification number tells you what type of plastic an item is; it does not guarantee that your curbside program accepts it.
- Check whether the item is accepted in your local curbside program.
- Check whether it contains food, hazardous residue, or a battery.
- If it is not accepted curbside, confirm which local drop-off, retailer, manufacturer, or specialist recycler takes that item and condition.
What commonly goes in the recycling bin?
| Item | Practical guidance | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Paper, newspapers, magazines, mail, and cardboard | Commonly accepted; flatten cardboard boxes. | Remove food scraps. Food-contaminated paper cannot be recycled, and shredded paper acceptance varies by program. |
| Plastic bottles | Typically accepted. EPA says caps and labels can generally remain on. | Confirm which resin types your local program takes; the resin number alone is not an acceptance signal. |
| Plastic bags, wraps, and film | Often collected through a separate retail or drop-off program. | EPA’s general guidance says not to put these in the household recycling bin. |
| Glass food and beverage containers | Recyclable; many curbside programs accept mixed colors. | Keep broken glass out of the bin and separate metal caps from glass bottles. |
| Aluminum cans and foil | Recyclable; remove food residue from foil. | In single-stream programs, do not crush cans because sorting equipment may have a harder time detecting them. |
| Batteries and electronics | Use a suitable battery or electronics drop-off, take-back program, or household hazardous waste collection. | Do not put batteries in household garbage or curbside recycling. Electronics are not curbside recyclables under EPA’s general guidance. |
| Household hazardous waste | Use a community collection event or permanent collection center. | Examples include paint, solvents, pesticides, unemptied aerosol cans, and some light bulbs. Local rules apply. |
| Food and yard material | Food scraps may be accepted by a separate composting service; yard trimmings may be composted or collected locally. | These are not ordinary packaging recyclables, and services depend on the community. |
Can pizza boxes be recycled?
Often, yes, if you remove food scraps and flatten the box. Food-soiled paper containers need to be cleaned; if grease or food remains, follow your local program’s instructions rather than assuming the whole item belongs in recycling.

Can plastic bottles and caps be recycled?
Plastic bottles are typically accepted, and EPA says caps and labels can generally stay on. Check local rules for accepted plastic types. Plastic bags and film usually need a separate collection point, while compostable plastics are not intended for ordinary plastic recycling and can disrupt that stream.

Can broken glass be recycled?
Do not put broken glass in the household recycling bin. EPA warns it can injure workers and damage equipment. Check local guidance for safe disposal.
Why batteries can start fires at recycling centers
Materials recovery facilities (MRFs) are generally designed to sort household paper, plastic, metal, and glass—not batteries. A lithium-ion battery or a device containing one can be crushed or damaged during collection, transport, or processing. EPA says contact between batteries and other metals can also create a fire risk. The compact batteries in everyday devices store substantial energy, so a misplaced battery can become a hazard in the waste stream.

An EPA analysis of publicly available news reports found more than 240 lithium-ion battery fires at 64 waste-management facilities between 2013 and 2020. The facilities included MRFs, waste vehicles, landfills, scrap yards, and electronics recyclers. EPA identified batteries from small consumer devices—including phones, tablets, laptops, hoverboards, and e-cigarettes—among the most common reported sources. This is a count from the report’s news-based methodology, not a comprehensive current annual fire rate. See the EPA summary of its lithium-ion battery fire analysis.
The chasing-arrow symbol on a lithium-ion battery does not mean it belongs in the municipal recycling cart. EPA explains that the symbol means the battery can be recycled through specialized battery recyclers.

How to dispose of batteries and battery-powered devices
For an intact, removable lithium-ion battery
- Keep it out of household trash and curbside recycling.
- Before taking it to an accepted collection point, cover its terminals or connections with non-conductive tape—EPA prefers electrical tape—or place the battery in its own plastic bag.
- Take it to a battery recycler, participating retailer, electronics recycler, or household hazardous waste program. Confirm that the location accepts that battery type and condition.
Terminal insulation helps prevent fires if batteries contact each other or other metals; it does not replace the need for separate collection.
For a device with an embedded battery
Use an electronics take-back program or recycler that accepts the device. Do not try to remove a battery that is not designed to be user-serviceable. Delete personal information from electronics before recycling them.

For a swollen or damaged battery
Do not assume that ordinary terminal-taping instructions are enough. Ask the manufacturer, retailer, state waste agency, or local household hazardous waste program for directions specific to the battery and its condition. If there is an imminent fire risk, EPA says to call emergency services.
For vehicle or energy-storage batteries
Arrange handling through the battery manufacturer, vehicle dealer, or installation provider rather than placing a medium or large battery in household collection.
