A SIM card may hold mobile-network data and, on some cards, contacts or SMS-related records. What it contains depends on the card, carrier and device; it is not a full backup of your phone. To recover contacts, use your phone’s SIM-contact import option: iPhone has one in Settings, and Google Contacts on Android has one under Manage SIM.
What can be stored on a SIM card?
A SIM card is part of the UICC, the hardware that contains SIM or USIM applications used to access mobile networks. The GSM Association describes the UICC’s applications and data as central to connectivity and security (GSMA).
SIM file structures can include subscriber and network identifiers, contacts, SMS-related records and authentication-related information. Ofcom’s technical report describes these as possible categories, not a guaranteed inventory for every card; many records are marked read-only by mobile network operators. The report dates to approximately 2012, so it is useful for understanding general categories, not as a specification for every current SIM or eSIM (Ofcom, “SIM Structure and Data”).

A SIM is not a general-purpose phone backup. The cited sources do not establish that photos, apps or all call history are stored on it. Contacts may instead be saved on the phone or in an online account, and message history may be held by the device or service. Importing SIM contacts therefore does not show every file or credential associated with the SIM.

How to import SIM contacts on an iPhone
- Insert the previous, compatible SIM card into the iPhone.
- Open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts.
- If asked, choose where to import the contacts.
- When the import finishes, open the Contacts app to check the results.
Apple says iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM. The information available to import depends on how the previous phone stored the contacts, so this option will not retrieve contacts that were saved only to the old phone or an account (Apple Support: “Import contacts from your SIM card to your iPhone”).
How to import SIM contacts on Android
- Insert the SIM card that may contain the contacts.
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap Organize > Manage SIM.
- Select the contacts to import and choose the destination Google Account.
- Tap Import, then check the account’s contacts.
Google says imported contacts are added to the selected Google Account while remaining in the original account or source. These labels apply to Google Contacts; a phone using its manufacturer’s contacts app may have different menus. Google’s documented steps are at Google Contacts Help: “Import your contacts into Google Contacts – Android”.

Which contact-import route fits your phone?

What to check if no contacts appear
- Confirm the right SIM is inserted. The contacts may be on a previous card rather than the one currently in the phone.
- Check where the old phone saved them. Look at its device contacts and any accounts used to sync contacts. Apple notes that import results depend on how the previous phone stored the information; Google’s import instructions apply only when contacts are saved on the SIM (Apple Support; Google Contacts Help).
- Check the phone’s app and card support. If the menu is absent or the card is not accepted, consult the phone maker or carrier. The documented steps do not promise support for every SIM and device combination.
No contacts appearing does not by itself prove they were deleted: the SIM may contain none, or the old phone may have stored them somewhere else.

The documented iPhone and Google Contacts features are specifically for importing contacts; they do not expose every SIM file, network credential or identifier. Android also restricts ordinary apps’ access to the SIM’s ICC ID, a globally unique, non-resettable identifier. Android Developers describes restrictions beginning with Android 10 and further restrictions beginning with Android 11, when access is limited to getIccId() (Android Developers: “Best practices for unique identifiers”).
