Research on programming practice supports making room for code-writing and feedback, while studies of tutorial formats show that video and text can still help learners introduce and revisit material. The useful choice is not projects or tutorials; it is learning a concept, then trying it yourself.
What building a project reveals that watching may not
A tutorial lets you follow someone else’s decisions. A project asks you to make those decisions: what to try, how to connect one concept to another, and what to do when the result differs from what you expected. That gap can expose questions a finished demonstration leaves unanswered.
This is an inference about why practice can be useful, not a claim that every small project produces a particular learning outcome. A study summarized by Sciety compared video lessons, code-tracing visualizations, and writing code with immediate AI-generated feedback. Among 250 participants, the practice-based group performed significantly better than video watchers on a novel code-generation test, and participants who wrote code had the highest performance. The result suggests that producing code and applying ideas to a new task can reveal more than familiarity with a demonstration; the summary does not establish that every project beats every tutorial.
Making a concept work in a new setting
When you adapt an example rather than reproduce it, you have to decide which parts of the original still apply. That is where a project can turn recognition into a test of whether you can use the idea independently. Trying the result, noticing what failed, and adjusting it also gives you concrete questions to take back to a tutorial or reference.

Learning through project-based instruction
A 2021 quasi-experimental study by Fatma Uca Özturk, Muzaffer Özdemir, and Durmus Özbasi followed 55 sixth-grade students in Turkey for six weeks. It reported significantly different academic-achievement and classroom-behavior scores between project-based and traditional-instruction groups, but no significant difference in cognitive load. This supports the relevance of project-based teaching in that particular classroom; it does not establish that adult self-taught programmers will get the same results.
Why tutorials still belong in the learning process
Watching a tutorial is not wasted effort. It can introduce unfamiliar ideas, show a sequence you do not yet know how to begin, and give you a reference when you forget a detail. The important distinction is between using a tutorial to learn or look something up and treating the act of watching as proof that you can build on your own.

A 2017 peer-reviewed study by Verena Käfer, Daniel Kulesz, and Stefan Wagner compared equivalent text and video tutorials for a novel software tool with 42 undergraduate software-engineering students. Participants using text alone completed the tutorial faster; participants using video alone applied the material faster; overall performance was roughly similar. When offered both, learners preferred video for new material and text for looking up details they had missed. The study examined a spreadsheet tool and tutorial formats—not independent programming projects—so it offers a useful lesson about complementary formats, not a direct comparison of tutorials with project work.
The authors concluded: “We conclude that in contexts similar to ours, while it would be ideal for software tool makers to offer both tutorial types, it seems more efficient to produce only text tutorials instead of a passive video tutorial – provided you manage to motivate your learners to use them.” That conclusion is specifically about tutorial production and software-tool instruction.

How to start a project before you feel ready
You do not need to know everything before you begin. Choose a result small enough that you can describe what it should do, then build only the next piece you understand. Use a tutorial to clarify a concept when you need it, rather than waiting to finish a long sequence before trying anything yourself.
- Pick a familiar problem. Choose something with an obvious outcome, such as organizing a short list or calculating a simple total. The point is to practise a concept, not to design an impressive product.
- Write down the first behavior. State what the project should do in one sentence. If that sentence contains several features, narrow it to one.
- Build a minimal version. Use the ideas you already know and accept that the first attempt may be incomplete. When you hit an unfamiliar concept, look up that concept rather than copying an entire project without understanding it.
- Test with a new case. Try inputs or situations that were not used in the tutorial example. Check whether the project behaves as you intended, and investigate mismatches.
- Use feedback to choose the next step. Read errors, inspect the result, or ask for feedback. Change one thing at a time so you can see what effect it has.
There is no evidence here for a universal ideal project size or a fixed ratio of project time to tutorial time. A good first project is simply small enough to finish a useful slice and specific enough to test whether you can apply what you have learned.

What “tutorial hell” can—and cannot—tell you
Some learners use “tutorial hell” for the feeling of following lessons without becoming able to build independently. The phrase can describe a real frustration, but an anecdotal discussion using it does not show how common the problem is or establish research consensus. If the feeling fits, the practical response is not necessarily to quit tutorials; it is to add a small task where you must make choices the lesson did not make for you.
How to tell whether a learning approach is working
Finishing a video or recognizing code can feel satisfying, but neither alone shows whether you can transfer an idea to a different problem. The practice study’s outcome—a novel code-generation task—illustrates why performance on a new task can be more informative than familiarity with the original example. For your own learning, look for evidence that you can explain a concept, adapt it, test it, and recover when an initial attempt fails.

- After a lesson, can you make a small change without replaying the exact steps?
- Can you use the same idea in a different example?
- When something breaks, can you identify a question to investigate rather than simply restart the tutorial?
- Can you return to a text or video reference to find a missed detail and then continue independently?
These are practical self-checks, not a validated assessment. The available studies involve different populations and methods, so they do not establish one learning path for everyone.
