Turning off Widgets in the taskbar settings removes the Widgets icon and the glanceable content that appears on the taskbar. It does not turn off the Widgets board itself. Microsoft’s current support guidance says the board can still be opened with Windows+W or a side swipe. Nothing in Microsoft’s documentation says that hiding the taskbar entry breaks Windows, Start, Search, Task View, pinned apps, or the system tray. If you want to stop interruptions, you can turn off badges and notifications without removing the board. If you want the board itself gone, that is a separate control, and it depends on your Windows edition, build, and management setup.

Start by deciding which “disable” you mean

People use “disable Widgets” to mean several different actions, and each one has different consequences. Keep them apart before you change anything.

Action Scope Does the Widgets board still open? How to reverse it Where it applies
Switch Widgets Off in Taskbar items Taskbar entry point and taskbar content Yes, with Windows+W or a side swipe Switch Widgets back On in the same place Standard consumer Settings
Turn off taskbar badges and dashboard notifications Interruptions only Yes Turn the badges or notifications back on in Widgets settings Standard consumer Settings
Turn off Widgets on the lock screen Lock-screen widgets only Not applicable to the board Toggle Widgets On in the lock screen settings Standard consumer Settings
Disable the Widgets board through device policy The entire Widgets experience, including the taskbar Microsoft documents that the board is prevented from opening under this policy Change or remove the policy Managed devices; the board-specific policy is marked Windows Insider Preview
Uninstall the Windows Web Experience Pack The software that delivers and updates Widgets Not documented in Microsoft’s sources Reinstall the pack from the Microsoft Store Software removal; effects are not fully listed by Microsoft

The first two rows are what most people want. The last two are stronger changes, and Microsoft’s documentation is less complete about what they affect.

What you lose when you hide the taskbar entry

Microsoft’s support article Stay up to date with Widgets in Windows describes what appears on the taskbar when Widgets is on. Hiding the entry removes those items.

Taskbar weather and glanceable content

The taskbar entry can show a live weather summary and occasional announcements from other widgets. Once the entry is off, you no longer see that content at a glance on the taskbar.

Badges for missed notifications

The taskbar entry can also show badges that flag new or missed notifications. Without the entry, those badges are not shown there.

What is not documented as lost

Microsoft’s documentation does not describe the board as deleted when you hide the taskbar entry. The board holds cards for weather, news, stocks, photos, and other provider content, and its Discover dashboard is a separate news stream. Microsoft does not document that hiding the taskbar control removes each of those dashboards or cards. You can still reach them through the board.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Microsoft also lists Widgets as one of several separately customizable taskbar components, alongside Start, Search, Task View, apps, and the system tray. Changing the Widgets setting does not change those components.

How to hide the taskbar entry

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
  2. Go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
  3. Expand Taskbar items.
  4. Switch Widgets to Off.

To confirm the change, check that the Widgets icon is gone from the taskbar and press Windows+W. The board should still open. If it does not, check whether a device policy is in place (see below).

How to stop interruptions and keep the board

If the goal is only to stop badges and popups, you do not need to change the taskbar switch at all. Widgets settings let you control badges and dashboard notifications separately, so you can keep the board and its content while turning off the interruptions.

Rank #3
  1. Open the Widgets board with Windows+W.
  2. Open Widgets settings. The entry point to this page can differ between Windows builds, so use the settings control shown on the board.
  3. Turn off taskbar badges.
  4. Manage notifications dashboard by dashboard, turning off the ones you do not want to see.

This keeps the icon and the board in place while removing the signals that draw your attention.

How to turn off lock-screen widgets

The lock screen has its own Widgets toggle, separate from the taskbar. Turning it off does not change the taskbar or the board.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
  2. Switch Widgets to Off.

Microsoft’s support article Customize the Lock Screen in Windows notes that lock-screen Widgets can use Windows Location service. If Location service is not enabled, Widgets estimates your location from your IP address. If you want to limit location use, the lock-screen toggle is the setting that controls it for this feature.

Turning the board off with device policy

Stronger restrictions are set through device policy, not the consumer Settings app. These policies are relevant mainly to managed PCs, such as those run by an IT department or with Group Policy or mobile device management tools.

AllowNewsAndInterests

Microsoft’s Policy CSP documentation for NewsAndInterests describes this policy as specifying “whether the widgets feature is allowed on the device.” Microsoft documents that it applies to the entire Widgets experience, including the content shown on the taskbar. Setting it to disallow Widgets therefore goes further than the taskbar switch.

DisableWidgetsBoard

The same documentation describes a separate DisableWidgetsBoard policy. It removes the board’s taskbar entry and prevents the board from being invoked. Microsoft marks this policy as a Windows Insider Preview feature. The page also says that settings under development may change or depend on other preview services. Before you rely on it, confirm that your Windows build supports it and that your management tool exposes it. Do not assume it is available on every Windows 11 device.

Should you uninstall the Web Experience Pack?

The Windows Web Experience Pack is the software Microsoft says delivers and updates certain features, including Widgets. Microsoft’s support article How To Update the Windows Web Experience Pack describes it as a Store-updated component. The Widgets and Discover guidance recommends keeping the Web Experience Pack and the Start Experiences App current when Widgets or Discover does not work correctly.

Microsoft’s sources do not say that removing the pack is required to hide the taskbar item, and they do not list every effect of uninstalling it. For most people, the taskbar switch, the notification settings, and the lock-screen toggle are enough. If you are considering removing the pack, treat it as a last resort, because Microsoft’s documentation does not describe its full effects.

If Widgets still misbehaves after a change

  • Check that the Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App are current in the Microsoft Store, since Microsoft recommends current versions when Widgets or Discover fail.
  • If the board will not open with Windows+W, check whether a device policy is blocking it.
  • If you turned off the taskbar entry and want it back, switch Widgets On under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items.
  • If Start, Search, Task View, or the system tray stops working, that is not a documented result of hiding Widgets. Troubleshoot those components separately rather than assuming Widgets caused the problem.

Shopping is not part of this task. The built-in Windows settings and, for managed PCs, device policy are the supported ways to change Widgets.
