Disabling the Windows 11 paging file does not, by itself, stop Windows from booting. The main costs are less memory commit headroom, loss of the paging file’s usual backing for modified memory pages, and possible failure to save a crash dump after a system error. Whether those costs matter depends on your workload and dump settings.

What changes when you turn off every paging file?

Windows uses a paging file as backing for infrequently accessed modified pages. That lets it remove those pages from physical memory and make room for more frequently used data. With no paging file, that ordinary backing is unavailable.

The other important change is the system commit limit: Microsoft defines it as physical memory plus all paging files. Without any paging files, the limit is slightly less than installed RAM. As a result, an application or workload can reach the commit limit sooner than it would with a paging file. Microsoft explains the page file’s role and commit limit.

Will Windows become slower or unstable?

Not necessarily. The documented behavior does not establish that every PC becomes slower or unstable when its paging file is disabled, and turning it off is not a guaranteed speed improvement. The practical risk is that a workload needing more committed memory than the reduced limit allows may fail or encounter memory-allocation problems.

Nor does the existence of a paging file mean Windows is constantly reading from or writing to it. Page-file activity and usage need context; a percentage alone does not show whether the computer has a performance problem.

What happens to crash dumps?

A crash dump needs enough storage in a paging file or a dedicated dump file for the selected dump configuration. If the required capacity is unavailable, Windows may not create the configured dump after a stop error. Microsoft documents the relationship between dump configuration and storage in its memory dump configuration guidance.

Dump types have different storage needs

Small, kernel, complete, and automatic dumps do not have identical requirements. A complete dump needs substantially more capacity than a small dump, while automatic dump sizing is more flexible. Check the configured dump type rather than assuming that one file size suits every configuration. Microsoft’s overview of kernel-mode dump types describes those distinctions.

A dedicated dump file is a separate option

Microsoft documents a dedicated dump file as a way to retain crash-dump support without using a page file for ordinary paging. It does not restore the commit capacity or modified-page backing provided by a paging file. See Microsoft’s instructions for configuring dump files before relying on this arrangement.

Is 100% page-file usage a reason to disable it?

No. Microsoft cautions that 100% page-file usage alone does not establish a performance problem when commit charge remains below the limit and significant memory is not waiting to be written. Evaluate memory conditions together instead of treating one counter as a diagnosis. Microsoft’s page-file guidance and memory usage optimization guidance discuss these measurements.

  • Compare peak commit charge with the commit limit.
  • Consider available memory and the modified-page-list size along with page-file usage.
  • Identify whether the issue is disk space, memory pressure, or perceived performance before changing the setting.

Which paging-file choice fits your concern?

Choice Commit headroom and paging Crash-dump implications Disk-space tradeoff
System-managed page file Retains page-file backing; Windows adjusts its size based on system conditions. Can accommodate dump needs through system-managed sizing. Uses volume space and may grow when required.
No paging file Commit limit is slightly less than installed RAM; ordinary page-file backing is unavailable. A dump that requires page-file capacity may not be captured. Does not reserve space for a paging file.
Dedicated dump file Does not restore ordinary paging-file backing or its commit capacity. Can retain crash-dump support without a page file used for paging. Requires space for the dedicated dump file.

For most users, system-managed sizing is the straightforward choice when the concern is avoiding manual size guesses. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance says the system-managed maximum is three times RAM or 4 GB, whichever is larger, subject to available volume space. That is an upper sizing rule, not a recommended target size; Windows adjusts the file according to physical memory, commit charge, and dump needs. See Microsoft’s page-file sizing guidance.

What to check before disabling it

  1. Check commit headroom: compare peak commit charge with the system commit limit. If the peak is approaching the limit, removing the paging file reduces the available margin.
  2. Check crash-dump settings: confirm which dump type is configured and whether a paging file or dedicated dump file provides the needed capacity.
  3. Identify the actual problem: if the concern is a full page-file counter, examine commit charge, available memory, and modified pages rather than relying on that counter alone.
  4. Choose the least disruptive configuration: keep system-managed sizing if you need its paging and commit benefits; consider a dedicated dump file only if you specifically need dump support without ordinary paging.
