There is no evidence-backed universal winner. Which server struggles first depends on its software, hardware, configuration, workload, and world or resource activity. To make a useful comparison, measure Minecraft’s tick behavior and FiveM’s server hitches under a defined, repeatable workload; a configured player-slot limit is not a performance benchmark.
What does “breaks first” mean?
A server can remain online while becoming unresponsive or delivering a poor experience. Define the failure you are looking for before testing: slow or overloaded Minecraft ticks, FiveM hitch warnings, client frame-rate problems, or some combination. These are different symptoms, so a single “players supported” number cannot capture them all.
The official PaperMC and Cfx.re documentation describes game-specific diagnostics and configuration behavior; it does not publish a controlled, head-to-head Minecraft-versus-FiveM stress test. A result from one server therefore cannot establish which game always fails first.

How to test both servers fairly
A fair comparison is a controlled workload exercise, not simply filling every available slot. The following protocol is a methodological recommendation based on the games’ distinct diagnostics, not an official shared benchmark standard.

- Record the test environment. Identify the Minecraft edition and server software, Minecraft or FiveM artifact version, host CPU and memory, storage, operating system, network conditions, and active plugins or resources.
- Define the workload. Record player count together with what players do: movement, chunk or world activity, entity activity, scripted actions, and connection churn. Use the same agreed activity pattern for repeated runs where practicable.
- Separate warm-up from measurement. Keep the test duration and measured interval consistent. Note configuration changes and any interruptions rather than comparing runs with different conditions as if they were equivalent.
- Collect game-specific server signals. For Paper, record tick-time measurements and their distribution. For FiveM, record hitch warnings and use the profiler to investigate resource or thread activity.
- Record client symptoms independently. Track client FPS, latency, and packet loss separately from server-side measurements. A server test alone does not establish client rendering performance.
- Repeat and report the result with context. State the workload, duration, settings, software versions, and observed symptoms. Describe the conditions under which a problem appeared rather than declaring a universal player capacity.
What to measure on Minecraft
Java Edition using Paper
Paper’s server.properties reference documents the JMX MBean net.minecraft.server:type=Server, which exposes averageTickTime and tickTimes in milliseconds. Capture the measurements during the workload and examine the distribution, not just the average or whether the process stayed online.
Paper says a normal individual tick should take no more than 0.05 seconds: a nominal 50 ms tick budget, not a player-capacity rating or a published stress-test result. Its max-tick-time setting describes the watchdog limit for an individual tick. Treat the tick measurements as evidence of server-side timing under your specific conditions.
Keep distance settings distinct
Paper distinguishes simulation-distance, which bounds where living entities are updated, from view-distance, which controls how much world data is sent to clients. These settings affect different work. Record the values actually used in each run; defaults and supported ranges can vary with version and configuration.

Bedrock Edition is different
Microsoft’s Bedrock performance guide says simulation distance governs game-mechanics processing such as entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, and fluid movement. It also says simulation distance has a higher performance cost than render distance because it affects both server and client work. The Bedrock Dedicated Server properties documentation notes that higher max-players, view-distance, and tick-distance values affect performance.
Those are Bedrock-specific findings. Do not apply them as though they describe Java Edition or Paper’s settings.
What to measure on FiveM
Use hitch warnings to find a problem, not name its cause
Cfx.re describes hitch warnings as signs that a resource is not performing as it should. Slow SQL queries and inefficient loops are examples of possible causes, not proof that either is responsible for a particular warning. Use the profiler to investigate which resource or thread is consuming time.

Capture and inspect a profiler recording
Cfx.re’s profiler guide recommends using current client and server artifacts for its workflow. It demonstrates profiler record (frames to record) and gives 500 frames as a starting example. That is a capture example, not a standardized stress-test duration or capacity figure.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Reproduce the workload and the period when the hitch or slowdown occurs.
- Start a profiler recording with the chosen frame count, using the guide’s 500-frame example as a starting point rather than a universal test length.
- View or save the capture, then inspect CPU-time peaks and drill into resource threads to investigate their timing.
- Compare the recording with the server hitch warnings and workload notes from that same interval.
The profiler guide explains that CPU-time peaks can correlate with frame drops, micro-stuttering, or server hitches. Correlation helps narrow the investigation; it does not by itself prove a particular resource is the root cause.
Separate server and client evidence
Cfx.re’s fact sheet describes a client resource monitor that shows CPU time and memory for each resource. Treat those client observations as distinct from server hitching. A client FPS drop or resource spike does not, on its own, establish that the server is hitching; likewise, a server-side warning does not tell you how every client is rendering the scene.

How settings can change the result
OneSync synchronization in FiveM
Cfx.re documents onesync_distanceCulling, which removes entities from synchronization when they are distant and outside the view matrix, and onesync_radiusFrequency, which changes entity update frequency according to distance. The documented performance trade-off is reduced accuracy for distant entities. These settings are variables to test under controlled conditions, not guaranteed fixes.
World and distance work in Minecraft
In Paper, simulation distance and view distance govern different work, so changing one can alter the workload without changing the other. In Bedrock, Microsoft’s guide specifically describes simulation distance as affecting both server and client work. Keep the edition-specific settings and their measured values with the result instead of treating “distance” as one universal knob.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Storage is only a candidate when the evidence points there
Paper’s documentation notes that synchronous chunk writes can affect performance, particularly on hard drives. That makes storage worth investigating when the observed work is storage-bound; it does not establish that a particular storage upgrade will improve a test. Do not treat a storage change as a substitute for diagnosing CPU-bound tick or script work.

Why slot counts do not answer the capacity question
A maximum slot count can be a configured or licensed ceiling, not evidence that the server can sustain that many players smoothly. Cfx.re’s vanilla FXServer setup example uses a 48-slot configuration. Its server-issues documentation says counts above 48 depend on subscription tier and current server artifacts. Neither figure is a performance guarantee. Report the player count that actually sustained the named workload and measured interval, along with the observed signals.
How to interpret what fails first
- Paper tick times rise during world activity: report the measured timing alongside the players, entities, chunks, and distance settings active at that time. Do not generalize the result to every Minecraft server.
- FiveM shows hitch warnings: inspect the profiler and resource activity around the same interval. A warning is a diagnostic clue, not a universal verdict that scripts always fail first.
- Clients stutter while server measurements look steady: keep client FPS and resource observations separate; the server metric alone cannot explain client rendering performance.
- The server remains online but performance degrades: describe the degradation and its timing. Uptime alone does not show that the workload was sustained smoothly.
The most useful answer to “what breaks first?” is therefore conditional: name the first measured symptom, the workload that triggered it, and the exact server and client conditions. Without that context, neither a tick threshold nor a hitch warning can rank Minecraft and FiveM overall.
