What you can claim depends first on where you live and, for some programs, where you worked. The UK, Australia and the United States have different benefits, age limits and eligibility tests; none of the rules below is a universal checklist. Use the official agency for your country—and, where relevant, your state, territory or UK nation—to check your own eligibility before applying.

Which benefits might be relevant?

These programs are starting points, not promises of payment. An unemployment or jobseeker benefit may depend on your work record, age, residence, income, savings, study status or other circumstances.

Location and program Type of support Key eligibility distinction
Great Britain: Universal Credit (UC) Means-tested help with living costs General rules include being below State Pension age and having no more than £16,000 in money, savings and investments. Student and 16–17-year-old rules have exceptions.
Great Britain: New Style Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) Contribution-based jobseeker benefit Usually requires qualifying employee work and Class 1 National Insurance contributions in relevant prior tax years.
Australia: Youth Allowance for job seekers Age-based income support with participation requirements The maximum age for unemployed young people is 22; full-time students and apprentices may qualify up to age 25, subject to rules.
Australia: JobSeeker Payment Income- and assets-tested payment Generally for people from age 22 to Age Pension age who meet residence and other conditions.
United States: Unemployment Insurance (UI) Temporary state-administered cash benefit Eligibility and amount vary by state and generally depend on state work and wage conditions, among other requirements.

For current rules, consult GOV.UK for UK benefits, Services Australia and the Australian Department of Social Services’ Social Security Guide for Australian payments, or the U.S. Department of Labor and your state unemployment agency for UI. The programs differ enough that their payment figures should not be compared as if they were equivalent.

What can you claim in the UK?

Universal Credit: support based on circumstances

GOV.UK describes Universal Credit as help for people on a low income or who need help with living costs, including people who are out of work, working or unable to work. General conditions include living in the UK, being 18 or over (with exceptions for some 16–17-year-olds), being below State Pension age, and having £16,000 or less in money, savings and investments.

If you are in a couple, you generally make a joint claim, and your partner’s income and savings affect the assessment. Full-time students face specific restrictions. One stated exception includes some people aged 21 or under without parental support who are studying up to A level or equivalent. Some 16–17-year-olds can also qualify in specified circumstances, such as lacking parental support, being responsible for a child, being pregnant or having recently given birth, having a disability or health condition, or caring for someone. These examples do not cover every exception; check the official eligibility guidance or benefits calculator.

New Style JSA: a recent contribution record matters

New Style Jobseeker’s Allowance is a separate route from Universal Credit. General conditions include being 18 or over, living in Great Britain, being below State Pension age and working fewer than 16 hours a week. A claimant usually needs employee work and Class 1 National Insurance contributions in the relevant previous tax years; which years count depends on the application date. If you live in Northern Ireland, check the separate local rules rather than assuming Great Britain’s process applies.

On GOV.UK’s overview page accessed 4 October 2026, the stated maximum is £75.65 a week for claimants up to age 24 and £95.55 a week for claimants aged 25 or over, for up to 182 days. Those are maximum figures, not guaranteed awards, and rates can change. GOV.UK says JSA may be claimed alongside UC, but JSA is counted as income and reduces UC. JSA is usually paid more regularly than UC and may provide National Insurance credits.

What can you claim in Australia?

Youth Allowance for job seekers

Australia’s Department of Social Services Social Security Guide, version 1.342 released in 2026, sets a maximum age of 22 for unemployed young people receiving Youth Allowance. The maximum is 25 for full-time students and Australian Apprentices, and defined continuation rules can apply after a birthday.

Eligibility can also depend on residence, schooling, independence, income and assets. Mutual obligations apply, and what you must do may involve job search, full-time study, training or a combination, depending on your circumstances. Young people and early school leavers can face special provisions. Because the rules are technical, use Services Australia’s payment guidance for an individual check.

JobSeeker Payment

Services Australia says a claimant generally needs to be aged 22 or over and below Age Pension age, meet residence requirements and income and assets tests, and be unemployed and looking for work—or temporarily unable to do usual work or study because of sickness or injury. Part-time or casual work, a temporary stand-down or reduced hours may still fit the agency’s description of possible unemployment circumstances, but income affects the payment.

Services Australia also lists a potentially free Skills for Education and Employment course to build reading, writing, maths and computer skills. The agency’s page was last updated 4 December 2025; check current rules and course access directly.

How does U.S. unemployment insurance work?

The U.S. Department of Labor describes Unemployment Insurance as temporary cash benefits for eligible workers unemployed through no fault of their own. Each state administers its own program, sets eligibility and benefit amounts within federal guidelines, and takes claims for the state where you worked. Work and wage requirements, plus other conditions, vary by state, so there is no single national amount, duration or complete eligibility test to apply here.

Start with the unemployment agency for the state where you worked. The general federal description does not establish whether a first-time jobseeker or someone without recent covered work qualifies; ask the state agency about its rules and check other local assistance if UI is not available to you.

Can you get help if you have never worked or live with your parents?

If you have not worked recently

Recent covered work or contributions are central to New Style JSA in Great Britain and commonly matter for U.S. state UI. If you have never worked, or do not have the required recent record, do not assume you qualify for an insurance-based payment. Check means-tested or age-based programs instead: for example, UC in the UK or the relevant Youth Allowance or JobSeeker route in Australia, if you meet that program’s conditions.

If you live with family

Living with a parent does not, by itself, answer whether you qualify. The relevant rules depend on the program and your circumstances. UK UC generally treats a couple as a joint claim, and the partner’s finances count; its student rules also include a specific exception involving some young people without parental support. Australia’s rules can consider independence and other circumstances. Ask the relevant official agency how your household and living arrangement affect your particular claim.

What other help is available while you look for work?

Cash benefits are not the only support. GOV.UK’s work-search support directory points to a benefits calculator, job-search assistance, help moving from benefits into work, Access to Work and interview communication support for disabled people, Help to Save, Budgeting Loans and support visits for claiming benefits. The directory is a starting point, not confirmation that each service is available to every person.

In Australia, the Skills for Education and Employment course may offer eligible people support with reading, writing, maths and computer skills. In any country, ask the responsible agency about employment services, training or disability-related help if you need it; availability and eligibility are program-specific.

How to make the right first eligibility check

  1. Identify the correct agency. Start with where you live and, for U.S. UI, the state where you worked. If you are in Northern Ireland, use its separate JSA rules.
  2. Check your age and study status. Note whether you are a student or apprentice. Age limits and education exceptions can change which program applies, particularly in Australia and for some young people in the UK.
  3. Gather your work history. Record recent employee work, covered earnings and payroll contributions. These can be decisive for contribution-based or insurance benefits.
  4. Prepare household and financial details. Where a program is means-tested, check how it assesses income, savings, assets, a partner and residence status.
  5. Raise circumstances that may change the route. Health or disability, caring responsibilities, pregnancy or parenting, lack of parental support, homelessness, care-leaver status and being under 18 may call for a different check or local support.
  6. Use the official calculator, payment finder or claim guidance. Eligibility and amounts are individual decisions; a general article cannot confirm that you will receive a payment.

After approval, obligations may continue. UK JSA uses a Claimant Commitment. Australian Youth Allowance rules may require job search, study, training or a combination. Follow the conditions attached to your claim and report changes to the agency responsible for it.
