If your flight in Pakistan is delayed or cancelled, contact the operating airline and ask in writing for the remedy you want: care while you wait, re-routing, or a refund where the airline’s policy provides for one. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) publishes guidance describing these options, but it should not be treated as a complete or independently verified statement of current law for every airline. Keep your ticket, notices and expense receipts, and verify the policy and process with the carrier handling your flight.
Who should you contact first?
Start with the operating airline: the carrier actually running the flight. It may be different from the airline whose code appears on your booking or the travel agent that sold the ticket. The operating carrier’s passenger-rights page and conditions of carriage are the practical starting points for its disruption process. If you booked through an agent, contact it too, especially if it must handle changes to your reservation, but direct the remedy request to the operating airline where appropriate.
Keep the phone number and email address on your booking current. PIA says schedule details may change and that it or its agent may try to notify passengers using the contact information provided. Check your messages and the airline’s current flight-status information rather than relying only on the original timetable.

Care while you wait
PIA’s Air Passenger Rights page describes refreshments or meals and communication facilities for qualifying delays of more than two to four hours, with the applicable threshold proportionate to flight distance. It also describes hotel accommodation when an overnight stay is necessary, including for transit or outstation passengers who do not have their own accommodation. The page cites Articles D 12.2.5 and D14 of ANO-001-ATCP-2.0. Those are PIA’s published descriptions; the current official full text of that notice was not available in the material reviewed, so do not assume the same threshold or process is confirmed for every carrier.

Refund if you stop travelling after a long delay
PIA says that when a delay exceeds five hours and the passenger decides to discontinue the journey with the airline, it should offer a full refund of the unused ticket. Its page cites Articles D 13.4 and D14 of ANO-001-ATCP-2.0. Ask the airline to confirm whether it records your situation as meeting this threshold and which ticket segments it considers unused before you agree to abandon the journey.
What choices does PIA describe after a cancellation?
PIA’s passenger-rights guidance says the operating airline should offer a choice between alternative transport or re-routing to the final destination and a full refund of the unused ticket. It also describes hotel accommodation where an overnight stay is necessary. Ask the airline to explain the available itinerary, what happens to any onward connection, and how it calculates the unused portion of a multi-leg ticket.

PIA’s conditions of carriage also describe remedies when it cancels a flight, does not operate reasonably according to schedule, fails to stop at a ticketed destination or stopover, or causes a missed connection in the circumstances covered by those conditions. The available remedies and how to claim them depend on the ticket contract and applicable law; check the conditions for your carrier and itinerary rather than assuming PIA’s wording applies to another airline.
Can you claim compensation?
PIA says compensation for a cancellation may be payable at the denied-boarding level unless the passenger received at least 12 hours’ notice. It also describes a defense if the carrier establishes that it took all measures reasonably required to avoid the cancellation or that taking those measures was impossible. This does not mean every cancellation automatically qualifies for a payment. The guidance reviewed does not establish a universal compensation amount for all disrupted flights in Pakistan.

Save the notice and record when it arrived, along with the airline’s stated reason for the cancellation. If you seek compensation, ask the carrier to identify the rule it applied, the basis for its decision and any evidence it relies on. Notice timing and the reason given may matter under the airline guidance, but the current legal position should be checked for your particular carrier and route.
Do domestic and international flights have different liability limits?
PIA’s passenger-rights page describes different limits for passenger-delay liability: for domestic carriage, it states a limit tied to proven damages or twice the sum paid for carriage, whichever is smaller; for international carriage, it states 4,150 SDR. The page also describes a defense where the airline proves it took all reasonable measures or that it was impossible to take them. These are figures and conditions stated on PIA’s page, not verified universal current limits, and they should not automatically be applied to another carrier.

A National Assembly document reviewed concerns a reported Carriage by Air (Amendment) Act, 2026 bill and proposed changes to liability amounts and dispute handling. A reported bill alone does not establish passage, assent or commencement. The information available here therefore does not confirm the current statutory limits. Before relying on a cap for a claim, check the current law and its application to your route and ticket.

What should you do while the disruption is happening?
- Confirm the status and responsible carrier. Check whether the airline has recorded the flight as delayed, cancelled or materially rescheduled, and identify the operating carrier on your itinerary.
- Contact the airline promptly. Use the contact channel shown on your booking or the carrier’s current official site. If an agent issued the ticket, contact the agent as well when it needs to make a booking change.
- State the outcome you want. For a cancellation, ask for re-routing or a refund. If you are stranded overnight, ask what accommodation and meals the carrier will arrange. After a delay, ask whether the airline’s stated refund threshold has been met if you want to discontinue the journey.
- Keep a record as events unfold. Save the booking confirmation, ticket, original and revised schedules, flight-status screenshots, SMS, email and app notices, receipts, and names or reference numbers from calls.
- Ask for a written decision. Request the rule or policy applied, the remedy offered, the refund amount if relevant, the expected processing time and a complaint reference. Keep the reply with your travel records.
Do not assume that accepting a re-routed flight preserves every other possible claim, or that choosing a refund resolves every issue. If that distinction matters to you, ask the carrier to explain the effect of each option before accepting it.

Where can you escalate an unresolved complaint?
A Pakistan Information Commission decision reproduces an Aviation Division response saying airline call centers informed passengers of schedule changes by call and SMS, airlines notified passengers of cancellation alternatives under their conditions of carriage, and a full ticket refund was made if the passenger requested one. The response also referred to CAA facilitation counters at airports coordinating with airlines to help address grievances. This is an official response recorded in a 2020 government account, not a guarantee that a counter is currently available at every airport or that the described service operates everywhere today.
If the carrier has not resolved your complaint, ask whether a CAA facilitation counter is available at the airport and check current official regulator and airline contact details. The information available here does not establish a current, universal online complaint portal or a single statutory filing deadline for disruption claims. Do not rely on an assumed deadline or escalation channel; ask the relevant authority or carrier to confirm the current process.
