WebVTT captions are timed text cues stored in a plain-text .vtt file. Each cue pairs text with start and end times so a video player can show it at the right moment. To add a WebVTT track to an HTML video, place the file where the page can load it and reference it with a <track> element inside <video>.
What WebVTT captions are
WebVTT stands for Web Video Text Tracks. It is a text-track format, not a video format: the video remains in its own media file, while the VTT file supplies time-aligned text. A WebVTT file can carry captions, subtitles, chapters, audio descriptions, or metadata, but one file must contain only one kind of data. The W3C WebVTT specification states: “A WebVTT file must only contain data of one kind, never a mix of different kinds of data.”
The player or HTML track identifies how the text data is to be used. A typical caption file begins with the required WEBVTT header, followed by cues. Each cue has a start time, an end time, and text; optional cue settings can influence its presentation.

<v Maya>Hello, everyone.The first cue describes a relevant sound; the second identifies the speaker. Cue text can include voice spans and simple emphasis. Check that the timing matches the actual video and that the text conveys sounds a viewer needs to understand what is happening.

Captions or subtitles: choose what the text needs to convey
Captions generally include dialogue and relevant audio information, such as sound effects, music cues, or other sounds. Subtitles commonly present dialogue, often translated for viewers who can hear the audio but need or prefer text. Usage of these terms varies by region, so the label alone does not tell viewers everything a track contains.
If a sound affects understanding, dialogue-only text may be insufficient. Describe the content the viewer will receive, and include relevant non-speech audio when the track is intended to provide captions. A track labelled “subtitles” can still meet a captioning criterion in some circumstances if it contains the relevant audio information.

Add a WebVTT file to an HTML video
Put the VTT file at a URL accessible from the page, then add a <track> child inside the <video> element. This example adds English captions and marks them as the preferred track:

</video>- Make the file available. Save the VTT file at the location used by the
srcattribute. In the example, the page requests/media/lesson.en.vtt. - Set the track purpose. Use
kind="captions"for a track intended as captions. Thekindvalue describes the track’s purpose. - Identify its language and name. Set
srclangto the language code, such asen, and give users a usefullabel, such as “English captions.” - Choose whether it is the preferred track. Add
defaultif this track should be enabled when user preferences do not select a better match. Only one track per media element may be marked default.
You can add separate tracks for other languages. Keep each file to one kind of data; for example, use separate files for captions and chapter markers rather than combining them in one VTT file.

Check the file and the viewer experience
- Validate the opening and cues. The first line should be
WEBVTT. Confirm every cue has valid start and end times and that its text appears for the intended interval. - Check synchronization. Play the video and verify that dialogue, speaker identification, and relevant sound descriptions appear at the right moments.
- Review language and labels. Make sure
srclangidentifies the track language and the label clearly tells users what they are selecting. - Confirm the file can load. Test the
srcpath from the page where the video is embedded. A correct VTT file is not useful if the page cannot retrieve it. - Try the actual player. Check track selection and default behavior in the target browser and player. HTML support does not establish how every individual website or player presents its controls.
- Separate kinds of data. Use one VTT file per data kind, and separate language files where needed.
Author cues in JavaScript or style them with CSS
An external VTT file is the straightforward option for a fixed caption track. A web developer can instead create a text track in JavaScript, set its mode, and add VTTCue objects. This is useful when cues need to be created or changed dynamically; the same core responsibility remains: provide correctly timed text that describes the intended content.
CSS can style cue text with the ::cue pseudo-element. Do not rely on ::cue-region for region-specific styling: MDN documents that browser support for it is absent. Test styling in the browsers and players that matter to your audience.

Archival metadata is a specialized option
For collection and archival workflows, FADGI’s “Guidelines: Embedded Metadata in WebVTT Files” lists version 2.0, dated September 1, 2026. It addresses provenance, administrative history, and context for WebVTT captions, subtitles, and descriptive audio. Metadata can help users and collection administrators understand a track’s data kind, origin, and when, where, and how it was made. This guidance is aimed at archival and collection contexts; it is not a universal requirement for ordinary web caption tracks.
