Investing in privacy coins can expose you to sharp price swings, weak or restricted liquidity, technology failures, theft, custody problems, and changing rules or exchange policies. Privacy features do not guarantee that every transaction is untraceable, and the risks differ by coin, platform, investment structure, and jurisdiction.
Can you lose your entire investment?
Yes. A privacy coin can fall substantially in value, become difficult to sell, or lose practical usefulness if demand, access, or confidence deteriorates. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) identifies adoption, future demand, competition, technological change, liquidity, and theft as risks for digital coins and tokens. It also cautions that buying only in the hope of selling later at a higher price is speculation that carries considerable risk, whatever a project’s white paper or business plan says. CFTC: Use Caution When Buying Digital Coins or Tokens.
These risks may interact: for example, a technology concern or change in access could weaken demand while making it harder to trade. The cited guidance identifies these kinds of risks but does not estimate the likelihood or potential size of a loss for any particular coin.

What are the main investment risks?
Price, demand, and competition
A coin’s market price depends on buyers’ willingness to hold or use it. Adoption as a medium of exchange or store of value, future demand, competing assets, and technological changes can all affect that outlook. A belief that privacy will remain valuable does not establish that a particular coin will retain demand or value.

Liquidity and the ability to exit
Liquidity affects how readily an asset can be bought or sold. Limited trading, a small set of venues, or restricted deposits and withdrawals may make it harder to transact at a desired time or price. An exchange delisting can further reduce access, but it does not mean every venue has delisted a coin or that the same restrictions apply everywhere.
For European context, a 2025 Council of Europe report describes privacy-coin delistings from major exchanges following MiCA’s entry into force. The same report says that, as of May 2025, daily Monero-to-USDT exchange volume remained high, at around €100 million per day. That is a dated report observation, not a current volume figure or a guarantee that a reader can trade Monero on a particular venue. Check the venue’s current deposit, trading, and withdrawal status for your location. Council of Europe, Crypto-assets and decentralised finance (2025).

Technology, implementation, and theft
Protocol or implementation changes can affect an asset’s usefulness or value, and hacking can result in theft. Privacy technology is not a substitute for security: it does not protect an exchange account, device, wallet credentials, or private keys from compromise. The CFTC’s general digital-asset guidance identifies technological change and theft among the relevant risks, but does not quantify either for specific privacy coins.
Privacy is not the same as guaranteed anonymity
Privacy coins do not all work the same way, and a privacy feature should not be treated as a promise that every transaction is untraceable. The Council of Europe’s 2025 report describes Monero privacy as built in, while Zcash anonymization is not enabled by default. Those differences affect the privacy assumptions a user must consider; they do not, by themselves, establish which coin is safer or a better investment.

What can go wrong when you use an exchange or custodian?
A platform may hold assets for you, control withdrawals, or combine several financial functions. Investor.gov warns that crypto intermediaries can combine exchange, broker-dealer, and custodial functions, creating conflicts of interest and investor risks. You may not receive protections associated with SEC-registered entities. Its alert, dated March 23, 2023, is not a statement about the status or safeguards of every platform today. Investor.gov: Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities.
Before relying on a platform, find out who controls the private keys, whether and how you can withdraw, what limits or suspension rights apply, and what happens to your assets if the service stops operating. Do not assume that a platform’s custody or account protections are equivalent to those for a regulated bank or brokerage account.

Could a privacy coin be delisted or unavailable where you live?
Yes. A venue may stop supporting deposits, trading, or withdrawals for a coin, and the rules or services available to you can depend on your location. The Council of Europe report provides dated European context, not a universal ban or a current list of supported exchanges. Availability should be checked directly with venues serving your jurisdiction.
Rules also depend on the country and can change. FinCEN’s U.S. guidance says virtual currency has no legal-tender status in any jurisdiction and distinguishes users, exchangers, and administrators. That statement is a regulatory definition, not a determination that owning or trading a particular privacy coin is legal or available everywhere. It is not individualized legal advice. Check the applicable official guidance for your country and, where relevant, state or province. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do Monero and Zcash differ as investments?
There is no single comparison that settles which is the better investment. Their privacy defaults differ, and access, liquidity, technical assumptions, and the route used to buy or hold them can matter as much as the label “privacy coin.” The available dated figures are not a current, comprehensive comparison.
- Privacy defaults: The Council of Europe’s 2025 report characterizes Monero privacy as built in and Zcash anonymization as not enabled by default.
- Liquidity and venue access: Check present-day trading, deposits, and withdrawals with services available in your jurisdiction. The report’s May 2025 Monero/USDT volume observation is not a live measure or a guarantee of local access.
- Technical and custody assumptions: Consider the protocol and implementation risks as well as how you will secure and transfer the asset.
- Compliant access: Consider whether you can buy, sell, and transfer the coin through services that are available to you and operate under applicable rules.
- Investment vehicle: If you are considering a trust or other wrapper rather than holding a coin directly, examine its fees, redemption rights, custody, and how its market price may differ from the underlying asset’s value.
What extra risks come with an investment trust?
A trust or other investment vehicle adds risks beyond those of the coin itself. Its shares may have different liquidity, fees, redemption terms, and market pricing than direct ownership. Grayscale Zcash Trust’s 2025 Form 10-K says its shares were not then redeemable and that they could trade at substantial premiums or discounts to net asset value (NAV). It also reports that the trust held approximately 2.4% of ZEC in circulation as of December 31, 2025. That holding is a trust-specific filing fact, not a measure of general investor ownership or a description of every Zcash product. Grayscale Zcash Trust Form 10-K for year ended December 31, 2025.

What should you check before investing?
- Your jurisdiction: Confirm current official rules where you live; general U.S. guidance or a European report does not resolve your local legal position.
- Venue support: Verify whether a service available to you currently supports the coin’s deposits, trading, and withdrawals—not just whether it lists a ticker.
- Exit conditions: Consider liquidity and what you would do if access narrowed or withdrawals were paused.
- Custody: Identify who controls the keys, what withdrawal rights and limits apply, and which protections actually cover your assets.
- Privacy assumptions: Understand whether privacy is built in or optional and avoid treating a coin’s privacy design as a guarantee of anonymity.
- Product terms: For a trust or other wrapper, read its fees, redemption terms, custody arrangements, and premium-or-discount risks.
- Loss tolerance: Treat a purchase made primarily in expectation of resale at a higher price as speculation, not as a dependable store of value.
