It usually rebounds to a lower height because impact also sends energy into internal friction, lasting deformation, vibration, and sound. How high it bounces depends on both the ball and the surface, as well as the conditions of impact.
What happens when a ball bounces?
As a ball falls, its gravitational potential energy becomes kinetic energy: the ball is moving faster as it approaches the ground. On impact, the ball—and sometimes the surface—deforms. That deformation stores energy briefly. As the ball recovers its shape, it pushes away from the surface and rises.
A real collision does not return all the energy to the ball’s upward motion. Some is dissipated inside the ball, some may go into permanent deformation of the ball or surface, and some leaves as vibration and sound. Internal friction also converts some mechanical energy into thermal energy. These loss mechanisms explain why successive rebounds are usually lower than the initial drop.
How can you calculate how bouncy a ball is?
For a ball dropped vertically from height h₁ onto a rigid, stationary surface and rebounding to height h₂, the normal coefficient of restitution is:

e = v₂ / v₁ = √(h₂ / h₁)
Here, v₁ is the ball’s speed just before impact and v₂ is its upward speed just after impact. The height version assumes negligible air resistance and the same gravitational field during the fall and rise. Measure both heights from the ball’s center, or use the same reference point consistently.
The coefficient describes the impact, not an unchanging property that applies to every collision involving that ball. The ball’s construction and the surface affect how much they deform and how much energy they dissipate. The University of Sydney’s explanation of the bounce of a ball and Penn State’s surface collisions and coefficient of restitution set out the relationship between impact and rebound speeds.

Restitution is not the fraction of energy retained
For this simplified vertical bounce, the fraction of translational kinetic energy returned to the ball is e², not e. The corresponding fraction lost from that vertical translational motion is 1 − e². This calculation describes the motion before and after the collision; it does not identify how much energy went into each individual loss mechanism.
Why does the same ball bounce differently on different surfaces?
A collision involves both objects in contact. A floor that deforms, vibrates, or otherwise absorbs energy can change the rebound compared with a rigid, stationary surface. Ball materials and construction also affect deformation and recovery. So “bounciness” is not a context-free ranking: a useful comparison must specify the ball, surface, and impact conditions.

How do angle and spin change a bounce?
The height formula describes a vertical drop and rebound. In an oblique collision, the ball also has motion along the surface. Tangential friction, the incoming angle, impact speed, and spin can affect its horizontal velocity and rotation after impact. A higher vertical rebound alone therefore does not tell you how much spin or sideways motion a ball will gain or lose. Rod Cross’s University of Sydney discussion of the physics of bounce covers these more complex effects.
How to compare balls with a simple bounce experiment
A super-ball-like ball and a low-bounce ball make the difference in rebound easy to see. University of Iowa physics demonstrations compare assorted balls on a steel plate and contrast a bouncing polyneoprene ball with a non-bouncing polynorbornene ball; these are demonstration examples, not a current consumer-product test.

- Set up a stable, hard surface and a measuring scale or marked background. Position the scale so the rebound can be read clearly.
- Choose at least two contrasting balls. Drop each from the same release height without pushing it or deliberately adding spin.
- Record the first rebound height by direct observation or video. Repeat the drops for each ball.
- For each trial, estimate normal restitution with e ≈ √(rebound height / drop height). Use the same height reference point for both measurements.
- Report the ball identities, surface, release height, measurement method, and number of trials alongside the results.
The estimate compares rebound with impact under the experiment’s conditions; it does not directly measure heat or sound. For a fair comparison, keep the release height and surface the same and avoid imparting spin. Comparing oblique bounces is a different, more demanding experiment: high-frame-rate video is useful for analyzing velocity components and rotation.
