They can use cameras, microphones, sensors, a phone connection, or AI-assisted features for tasks such as taking photos, answering voice requests, or translating speech. Some also show digital information through a lens, but a display is not required: smart glasses are a broader category than augmented-reality (AR) glasses.
What are smart glasses?
The Australian eSafety Commissioner defines smart glasses as eyewear containing a small computer. In practice, the term covers devices that combine ordinary glasses form with one or more computing functions, including sensing, capture, communication, or assistance. The exact feature set varies by model, and there is no universally agreed list of features that every pair must have. eSafety Commissioner: Smart glasses and online safety; 2021 rapid review of smart-glasses definitions.
Are smart glasses the same as AR glasses?
No. AR glasses are a subset of smart glasses: they present or align digital content with the wearer’s view of the physical environment. Smart glasses can instead focus on audio, voice commands, cameras, connectivity, or sensors without showing a visual overlay. A 2021 review found that terminology is used inconsistently and that defining smart glasses only as AR eyewear leaves out sensing and other head-worn computing devices. Read the review.
Labels such as “AI glasses,” “smart eyewear,” “intelligent eyewear,” and “display glasses” overlap in marketing, but they do not guarantee the same functions. Check what a particular device actually does rather than inferring capabilities from its label.

How do smart glasses work?
The glasses use built-in components—such as microphones, cameras, or sensors—to collect input, then process it on the glasses, through a connected phone, or through an online service, depending on the model. The wearer may interact by speaking, touching a control, using gestures, or viewing a lens display. Some devices provide audio or other assistance without putting anything in the wearer’s field of view.
There is no single architecture for the category. Phone dependence, local processing, connectivity, display behavior, battery life, prescription-lens support, fit, and water resistance are product-specific. Consult the maker’s specifications for the model you are considering; Lenovo’s glossary also advises checking device details, though it is vendor guidance rather than an industry standard. What can smart glasses do?
- Communication and capture: Depending on the model, glasses may support calls, voice interaction, or photo and video capture.
- Hands-free assistance: Microphones, speakers, connectivity, or AI functions can support requests such as translation or online search.
- Accessibility: The eSafety Commissioner describes uses including object description for blind or low-vision people and live speech-to-text for deaf users. Whether those functions are available depends on the device and its software.
- AR information: Models with a visual display can present digital information in relation to the surroundings; other smart glasses have no lens display.
For example, Samsung’s May 20, 2026 announcement with Google described planned “intelligent eyewear” capabilities including voice access, phone connectivity, navigation, translation, notifications, and photo capture. The announcement describes a product direction, not confirmation of retail availability. Samsung and Google announcement.
What should you know about privacy?
Glasses with cameras can make recording less obvious than holding up a phone. An indicator light may be easy for bystanders to miss, and the eSafety Commissioner notes that such indicators may be tampered with. This is a bystander-privacy concern, not evidence that every wearer is recording. If you use camera-equipped glasses, follow local rules and consider whether people nearby understand when capture may be happening. eSafety Commissioner guidance.

Is there a standard definition?
There is no universal consumer definition that fixes which features qualify. Academic discussion has documented inconsistent terminology, while the Australian eSafety Commissioner notes the broad range of contemporary capabilities. China’s GB/Z 177.6-2026 is a jurisdiction-specific guidance document on intelligence grading for AI terminal glasses; it is not a global definition of smart glasses. China’s GB/Z 177.6-2026 listing.
