A SIP trunk is a virtual IP connection between an organization’s phone system and a telephone service provider. It lets business calls travel between the organization’s network and the public telephone network. SIP manages call setup and control; it does not carry the voice itself.

What is a SIP trunk?

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. The IETF’s RFC 3261 defines SIP as an application-layer signaling protocol for creating, modifying, and ending sessions, including internet telephone calls and multimedia conferences. SIP works with other protocols; it is not a complete communications system on its own.

A SIP trunk connects an organization’s SIP communications network to an internet telephony service provider (ITSP). The connection extends from the organization’s network to the provider, which supplies telephone service and routes calls on its side. The word “trunk” comes from traditional telephony, where trunks were physical connections; a SIP trunk is a virtual connection between SIP networks, not necessarily a dedicated physical telephone circuit.

SIP is not synonymous with VoIP. VoIP is the broader practice of carrying voice over IP networks. SIP is one protocol commonly used to set up and manage those calls. Voice media travels separately, often using the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How does a SIP trunk call work?

The exact signaling, routing, and media paths vary by carrier and deployment, but a typical call follows this sequence:

  1. A caller dials. The call starts on an IP phone, softphone, or other endpoint connected to the organization’s phone platform.
  2. The phone platform signals the provider. It sends SIP messages over the configured connection. An INVITE request initiates a session; the receiving systems respond with call-control information.
  3. The systems agree on media. They exchange session descriptions that indicate supported media characteristics, such as audio formats. This SIP offer/answer process is described in RFC 3261.
  4. The provider routes the call. For an outgoing call, the provider routes it toward the destination telephone network. For an incoming call, it routes the call toward the organization’s phone system. Gateways, session border controllers (SBCs), or other edge components may be involved; the particular design depends on the provider.
  5. Media carries the conversation. Voice typically travels using RTP. Its path does not have to match the path taken by SIP signaling.
  6. SIP ends the session. When a participant hangs up, SIP signaling terminates the established call. RFC 3261 describes the BYE request for ending an established session and its dialog.

This is a high-level model, not a packet-by-packet guarantee. Registration, authentication, routing, media handling, security, and failover differ across implementations. For a more technical example, the IETF’s RFC 3665 provides basic SIP call-flow examples. RFC 9409, published in 2023, defines a capability-discovery link relation that an enterprise SIP network may use to retrieve an ITSP’s capability and configuration document; it does not prescribe every provider’s service design.

Do you need a PBX for SIP trunking?

No particular IP-PBX purchase is implied by the term “SIP trunk.” An IP-PBX is one possible customer-side endpoint, but an existing SIP call server, SBC, or other SIP-enabled system may be part of the architecture. Microsoft and Twilio both document IP-PBX connections as examples, not as a universal equipment requirement.

Some architectures add components between endpoints and the provider. For example, Microsoft’s Skype for Business design describes a Mediation Server that can proxy sessions and transcode media when needed. The provider’s edge may use an SBC, router, or gateway. These are implementation examples, not a standard bill of materials.

Before buying or replacing equipment, identify your current phone system and ask the prospective provider about compatible systems and trunking modes. Confirm whether it uses registration or IP authentication, which codecs and signaling methods it supports, what firewall or NAT configuration is needed, and how it handles emergency calling, concurrent-call limits, and failover.

How many SIP channels or how much bandwidth do you need?

Capacity is generally planned around the number of calls that may be active at the same time, often described as concurrent calls or channels. Estimate the peak for your organization, then confirm how the provider provisions capacity and whether it imposes burst limits. Bandwidth planning also depends on codec, packet overhead, and network conditions; a channel count alone does not establish the required connection capacity.

Vendor formulas illustrate why there is no single bandwidth figure that applies to every SIP trunk:

Documentation Example bandwidth guidance Scope
Microsoft Skype for Business Server documentation Maximum simultaneous calls × (64 kbps + header size); the page notes header size is at most 20 bytes. Microsoft’s product-specific peak-bandwidth formula for Skype for Business Server 2015, 2019, and Subscription Edition. Publication date is not stated on the page.
Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking documentation Maximum simultaneous calls × 100 kbps. Twilio’s estimate for G.711, including room for overhead. Publication date is not stated on the live documentation page.

These figures are examples tied to named vendor environments, not universal sizing rules or service guarantees. Microsoft’s Skype for Business Server documentation also discusses internet, MPLS, and private connections in that product’s context. Ask your carrier and network team for current requirements based on your implementation, codecs, traffic peaks, and chosen connection.

What should you compare when choosing a provider?

Provider coverage, service features, authentication, capacity, resilience, and pricing depend on the specific offering and jurisdiction. Compare the points below against your existing phone system and business requirements.

  • Coverage and numbering: Check supported countries and regions, inbound numbers, number porting, and local requirements.
  • Features: Confirm emergency calling, caller identification, call barring, fax or messaging needs, and required integrations.
  • Compatibility: Verify support for your PBX, call server, SBC, codecs, signaling methods, and authentication model.
  • Capacity: Ask about concurrent-call limits, burst capacity, and how calls or capacity are provisioned and billed.
  • Network and quality: Compare connection options and requirements for bandwidth, latency, jitter, packet loss, and quality of service (QoS).
  • Security: Ask how signaling and media are protected, whether access uses IP allowlisting or credentials, and what abuse and fraud controls are available.
  • Resilience: Establish whether alternate routes, geographic redundancy, and failover are available, how failover behaves, and what recovery tasks remain yours.
  • Commercial terms: Request a quote that identifies setup charges, recurring capacity fees, per-minute usage, number charges, and contract terms. No single pricing model or market-wide price is established across providers.

Availability, emergency-calling obligations, supported equipment, security options, and commercial terms can vary by jurisdiction and change over time. Confirm them with the selected provider before deployment.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
