OpenAI dots are persistent AI agents designed to work in the background on a cloud computer and use connected apps. After OpenAI announced them on September 29, 2026, users reported connection problems, failed tasks and other glitches. Those reports have prompted interest in open-source projects with similar aims, but they do not establish how often dots fail or whether the alternatives are more reliable.
What OpenAI dots are—and who can use them
OpenAI describes dots as agents that can work in the background using their own cloud computer, connected apps and instructions from a user. The company says they are powered by GPT-6 Astra and can be contacted through ChatGPT, Slack or Teams. OpenAI also says its plugin ecosystem connects to more than 4,000 apps; that figure is the company’s own claim, not an independently audited count. OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes a phased rollout, rather than immediate availability to everyone.
At launch, OpenAI said rollout would begin for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise, Education and Healthcare users could try a beta if their workspace administrator enabled it. The announcement said one dot was included in eligible plans at no extra charge, with an allowance for deeper work. Eligibility and plan terms may change, so check the current details in your account or with OpenAI.

OpenAI says a dot’s cloud computer is separate from a user’s own computer unless the user connects it. The company also describes permission controls and review steps for consequential actions. These are announced safeguards, not a guarantee against mistakes: OpenAI itself cautions, “Dots can still make mistakes, so always review consequential work.”

What the early technical-problem reports show
In an October 7, 2026 report, The Register’s Thomas Claburn described user complaints about failed tasks, connection and cloud-connectivity problems, disappearing dots, and refusals that appeared related to abuse prevention. The report also noted similar discussions in the OpenAI Developer Community. OpenAI did not respond to the publication’s request for comment about dots usage.
The Developer Community’s dots topic listing showed discussions with activity dated October 7 and 8, 2026. Examples included problems connecting dot calls across mobile, web and desktop; connection errors and failed calls; approval behavior; and a reported Gmail trigger regression. These posts show that users were discussing specific problems, but they are not an official incident report or a representative sample.

Two distinct open-source projects called OpenDots and Open Dot
OpenDots: a self-hosted developer template
CopilotKit announced OpenDots on October 1, 2026 as an open-source, self-hosted template for building a persistent-agent workspace. Its described features include a browser, files and terminal for an agent; pages and documents; Slack interaction; approval before saving drafts; scheduled recurring tasks; and saved preferences. CopilotKit says developers can bring an agent through AG-UI and use an OpenAI-compatible model.

CopilotKit describes OpenDots as built on CopilotKit, AG-UI and CopilotKit Intelligence, and calls it an “early, single-owner starting point” for developers to clone, adapt and connect to their tools. Treat it as a starting template, not a mature, turnkey replacement. Its feature descriptions come from the project publisher, not independent testing.
Open Dot: a Mac desktop app
Open Dot, in the Composio community repository, is a separate open-source project. Its README describes a Mac desktop app that can use an OpenAI API key or models accessed through OpenRouter. It can connect to Gmail, Calendar, Slack, Notion, GitHub and other apps through Composio. The project says it asks for approval before actions such as sending, posting, paying or changing connected data; these are repository descriptions, not an independent security audit.

Open Dot’s README says routines and triggers only run while the app is open, and scheduled work can be skipped while the Mac sleeps. E2B is documented as an optional cloud computer for continued operation while the Mac sleeps. The README documents OpenRouter access, but does not establish that local-model execution is currently available. The project also says it is not affiliated with OpenAI.

Open Dot creator Prathit Joshi told The Register: “I enjoy building and shipping tools for developers, especially tools that can support use cases that closed model companies aren’t necessarily incentivized to support, like allowing open source models.” The Register described Joshi as a Bangalore-based growth engineer at Composio.

How the three options differ
The projects share an always-on-agent idea, but they differ in deployment, model access and who must operate them. The capabilities below are descriptions from OpenAI and the projects themselves, not results from a controlled comparison.
| Option | Deployment and upkeep | Models and app connections | Controls and operating costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI dots | Managed cloud product; access is rolling out in eligible markets. | OpenAI says dots use GPT-6 Astra and connect through its plugin ecosystem to more than 4,000 apps, a company-reported figure. | OpenAI describes permission settings and action review. Its launch announcement said one dot was included in eligible plans, subject to an allowance for deeper work; verify current terms. |
| OpenDots | Self-hosted developer template; setup, adaptation and maintenance fall to the developer. | CopilotKit says it accepts OpenAI-compatible models and uses AG-UI for agents and tools. No comparable app count is stated by the project. | CopilotKit describes draft approval and says computer access is off by default. Model and infrastructure costs depend on the chosen setup. |
| Open Dot | Mac desktop app; routines require the app to remain open unless optional cloud-computer support is configured. | The README documents OpenAI API and OpenRouter model access, with Composio integrations. No comparable app count is stated in the README. | The project describes approval for consequential actions. An API key is needed for model access, and optional Composio or E2B configuration may add service costs. |
Open source does not mean cost-free operation: model tokens and third-party services can still cost money, as The Register notes. Nor does source availability by itself show that a project matches a managed product’s reliability, safety or breadth of integrations.
Which option makes sense for you?
- Choose dots if you want a managed service and your account or workspace is eligible. Review access, permissions and consequential actions rather than assuming an agent’s work is automatically correct.
- Explore OpenDots if you are a developer who wants a self-hosted template to customize, connect to tools and maintain. Its early-stage description makes it less suitable as a plug-and-play service.
- Explore Open Dot if you want a Mac desktop app, documented OpenAI API or OpenRouter model access, and Composio-based app connections. Account for the requirement to keep the app open for routines unless you configure optional cloud-computer support.
The available launch posts, README and early user reports do not provide side-by-side tests of task success, reliability, security or total cost. Choose based on deployment and maintenance needs, model and app requirements, and your willingness to review agent actions—not on an unsupported assumption that an open-source option is already more dependable.
