The term is descriptive, not a standardized product category: platforms more often call the behavior link previews, unfurling, embeds, or identify a specific bot such as Discordbot. The fetch can create requests to your site, and the platform—not your page alone—determines how the final card looks.
What are microbrowsers?
When a person shares a link, the receiving service may request that URL from its own servers, read page information, and retrieve an image or other preview asset. That platform-side client is often called a microbrowser. In official documentation, Slack describes “classic link unfurling,” while Discord refers to Discordbot and link previews. The terminology varies, and the reviewed platform documentation does not define microbrowser as a formal, standardized class.
A useful way to think about the process is: a user shares a URL; a platform fetcher requests the page; the service selects metadata and possibly media; and the app renders a card. Fetching, metadata selection, caching, and layout differ by service, so a preview that works in one app may not look the same in another.
How link previews are assembled
- A user shares a fully qualified URL. Include the protocol, such as
https://. Slack says its unfurling requires a protocol in the URL (Slack link unfurling documentation). - The platform fetches the page. Services use the request to identify content and gather information for a card. Discord says its fetch is triggered when someone shares a link in a message, rather than by continuous scanning (Discord Support).
- The service reads available information. Common inputs include Open Graph tags such as
og:title,og:type,og:image, andog:url. Slack says classic unfurling checks common Open Graph and X Card metadata (Slack documentation; Open Graph protocol). - The app renders a platform-specific card. It may show a title, description, image, or media details. Metadata provides hints; it does not force every app to display every field or refresh at the same time.
Why previews differ by platform

How to improve the preview for your website
- Set page-specific metadata. Provide accurate title, description, and preview-image information. Use the relevant Open Graph fields, including
og:title,og:type,og:image, andog:url. Check the protocol reference for field requirements and image details (Open Graph protocol). - Use a complete, reachable URL. Share a URL with its protocol and make sure both the page and intended image assets can be fetched. Slack explicitly requires the protocol for unfurling (Slack documentation).
- Test the exact URL in the apps your audience uses. Each platform makes its own metadata and rendering choices. A good result in Slack does not establish what Discord or Messages will show.
- Apply platform-specific setup where needed. For Apple Messages, use Apple’s current rich-preview guidance rather than treating generic metadata as the complete recipe (Apple TN3156).

How to control Slack unfurling
If you post messages through Slack’s API, link and media unfurling are separate controls. Set both unfurl_links and unfurl_media to false to prevent crawling and attempted unfurling for that posted message. These are Slack API settings, not general controls that affect other platforms (Slack link unfurling documentation).
Slack app developers who need custom cards can subscribe to link_shared and respond with chat.unfurl. The documented scopes include links:read and links:write; request only the domains and permissions the app needs (Slack app unfurling documentation).

Privacy and security implications
Expect requests when a link is shared
A preview fetch is a real request to the shared URL, so site operators should account for it in logs, rate limits, and access rules. Discord says its bot fetches after a link is shared, not by continuously crawling websites on its own (Discord Support).
Identify Discord requests carefully
Discord gives Discordbot/2.0 as an example User-Agent, but cautions that other parts may change and that User-Agent strings can be spoofed. For firewall decisions, Discord recommends checking request IPs against its official public IP ranges; those ranges can change and should be checked again when configuring rules (Discord developer documentation).

Do not treat a preview as a safety check
A card can look legitimate without proving that its destination is safe. A 2020 Network and Distributed System Security Symposium study tested 20 social and messaging platforms and found that four could generate benign-looking previews for malicious resources under the study’s test conditions. This is a historical result from that study, not a current measurement of every platform (NDSS Symposium study). Inspect the actual destination domain instead of relying on the card’s appearance.
A separate paper archived by the U.S. National Science Foundation describes an unfurl-related Slack confidentiality attack in the configuration it studied. That finding is a reason to review app permissions carefully; it does not establish that every Slack unfurl exposes private messages or that the studied issue persists unchanged today (NSF PAR paper).
