Graphic map features are the visible marks and shapes used to represent geographic information. Depending on a feature’s character, size, and the map’s scale, it may appear as a point, a line, or an area. Symbols, colors, patterns, and labels help distinguish features; the map’s legend explains what those conventions mean.
What counts as a graphic map feature?
A graphic map feature is a visual representation of something geographic, such as a road, stream, building, lake, or change in elevation. The mark represents the real-world feature; it does not necessarily reproduce its literal size or shape. A small building, for example, may be shown with a point-like symbol instead of a footprint.
“Graphic map features” is a broad description, not a single standardized legend category. The symbols and colors used on one map may not mean the same thing on another, so interpret them using that map’s legend.

What are the three basic feature forms?
Point features
A point marks a localized object or location. Structures, dams, gates, rocks, waterfalls, and wells may be represented with point symbols. A point can also stand in for an object that is too small to show clearly as an area at the map’s scale.

Line features
A line represents something with length, such as a road, river, boundary, or contour. A line’s color or pattern may distinguish one kind of feature from another. On USGS US Topo maps, for example, a perennial stream is shown as a solid blue line, while an intermittent stream uses a blue dashed-and-dotted line. USGS Topographic Map Symbols
Area features
An area, or polygon, shows a feature with meaningful extent, such as a lake, reservoir, land-cover class, or built-up zone. A feature that is large enough to depict as an area on one map may be reduced to a point on another if it is too small to draw legibly at that scale.

How do scale and map purpose affect what you see?
Maps select and simplify details so that features remain readable at the map’s scale. USGS says features are shown as points, lines, or areas depending on their size and extent. A large reservoir may appear as a polygon, while a small reservoir may be a point symbol. These are scale-dependent representations, not conflicting descriptions of the feature. USGS, Topographic map symbols (2005)
The map’s purpose also shapes which features are included and emphasized. Topographic maps combine natural and human-made information, including terrain, water, land cover, transportation, boundaries, names, and structures. Contour lines are especially important: the USGS identifies their use to portray the shape and elevation of land as the feature that most distinguishes topographic maps from other map types. How should you interpret a map symbol?
- Find the legend. Match the mark to the symbol key for that specific map rather than assuming a color or shape has a universal meaning.
- Look at its form and appearance. Note whether it is a point, line, or area, as well as its color, shape, pattern, and line style.
- Check the scale and map notes. These can explain why a feature is simplified, represented with a different form, or not shown.
- Read labels alongside the symbols. Geographic names and route numbers identify or add context to selected features.
For USGS US Topo maps, the symbol guide describes brown topographic contours, blue hydrographic features, and roads shown in black or red. These are conventions for that product, not rules that apply to every map. The guide describes US Topo maps at a scale of 1:24,000: one inch on the map represents 24,000 inches, or 2,000 feet, on the ground. USGS Topographic Map Symbols
