FAST means free ad-supported streaming television: an always-on, scheduled channel funded by advertising. A 24/7 YouTube channel is different: it is a continuous livestream on YouTube, not automatically a channel distributed through a FAST TV service. You can run one with a computer-based encoder or hosted cloud playout, provided your channel is eligible and your programming complies with YouTube’s rules and content rights.

What FAST means—and what it does not mean

An industry explainer uses FAST for free ad-supported streaming television: linear programming that viewers can watch without paying a subscription, with advertising supporting the service. This is a useful industry description, not a formal standards definition. Industry explanation of FAST.

A YouTube livestream can also run continuously and follow a schedule, but that alone does not make it a FAST channel. YouTube is the destination in this setup; distribution through a separate FAST television service is not implied. YouTube describes livestreaming as a way to interact with viewers in real time through video, chat, and more. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

What you need before starting a 24/7 YouTube stream

  • Live-stream eligibility: YouTube says your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Check eligibility before buying equipment or building a schedule. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • A source and a streaming method: YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. An encoder is one option, not a requirement to buy dedicated hardware. YouTube documents encoder streaming for workflows such as gameplay, overlays, and production gear. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • Programming you have rights to use: Confirm rights for every video, song, clip, image, and graphic in the schedule, and check YouTube’s rules and monetization policies before you run it continuously.
  • A continuity plan: Decide how the stream will handle transitions, interruptions, and recovery. These are operational choices; YouTube’s setup guidance does not prescribe a particular redundancy design.

Plan the channel before you put it on air

Choose a format and build a rights-cleared schedule

Decide whether the channel will show a repeating playlist, a curated sequence of different programs, or live-originated content. List each asset and confirm that your rights cover the intended use and duration. A continuous schedule can make an existing rights or policy issue last longer, so do not treat a video being available online as permission to rebroadcast it.

Separate the continuous feed from one-off events

If you use YouTube’s Live Streaming API, it distinguishes broadcast resources from stream resources. YouTube’s documentation gives the example of a channel running a 24/7 feed while creating a separate broadcast for an interview. That model helps keep an ongoing channel and a special event distinct rather than treating them as one interchangeable broadcast. YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcasts.

Test the whole schedule

Before promoting the channel, test playlist order, transitions, video and audio levels, stream-key handling, and the steps you will take if the stream stops. Test with the same source and workflow you plan to use continuously; a short successful test does not itself prove that every later transition or recovery step will work.

How to run a 24/7 YouTube channel yourself

  1. Verify eligibility: In YouTube Studio, check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If live streaming is unavailable, resolve the channel eligibility issue before proceeding. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Prepare the programming: Assemble the videos or live production sources in the order you intend to show them. Confirm permissions for all included audio and visual material, then check that the schedule has a deliberate transition or fallback rather than an accidental empty gap.
  3. Choose a streaming method: For a produced feed or prerecorded playlist, use an encoder or playout workflow that can send the output to YouTube continuously. YouTube also supports mobile, webcam, and console methods, though those sources serve different production needs. Follow the current YouTube setup instructions for the selected method; do not assume all methods expose the same controls. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  4. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio: Start a live stream using the chosen encoder workflow, configure the broadcast details, and obtain the stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the stream. Enter it only in the encoder or service you intend to use.
  5. Configure the source and start a test: Set the encoder or playout source to the intended video and audio output, connect it to YouTube using the stream key, and start the feed. Confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming picture and sound are correct before making the stream public or promoting it.
  6. Run and monitor the schedule: Watch the initial transitions and check the stream after launch. Define who will respond to interruptions and how the source will be restarted. If using the API to manage continuous programming alongside a separate event, keep the ongoing feed and the event as distinct broadcast resources as described in YouTube’s example. YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcasts.

Copyright, YouTube rules, and monetization

Do not assume that a 24/7 schedule is exempt from copyright or YouTube policy because the content is prerecorded or because you have permission to stream it somewhere else. Check the current official YouTube rules for your content and channel, and make sure your rights cover continuous streaming and any monetized use you plan. YouTube’s monetization features depend on channel eligibility, settings, and ad serving; an ad slot is not a guarantee that an ad will appear. YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • You cannot start a live stream: Confirm verification and whether the channel has had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Follow the current eligibility instructions in YouTube Help before changing your encoder setup. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the correct stream key is entered in the intended encoder or hosted service, and verify that the source is actually sending video and audio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the sender.
  • The playlist stalls or transitions incorrectly: Test the full sequence, not just the first video. Check playlist order and the handoff behavior in your chosen playout workflow, then repeat the test after making a change.
  • The picture or sound is wrong: Check the source output and the incoming preview in YouTube Studio. Isolate whether the problem is in the original media, the encoder or playout settings, or the connection to YouTube before changing several settings at once.
  • The stream stops unexpectedly: Follow your documented restart and recovery procedure, then check the source, connection, and stream status. If continuous operation is essential, choose a workflow with a recovery plan and test it before relying on it.
  • Expected ads or revenue do not appear: Review channel eligibility and monetization settings, but remember that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve an ad. Continuous operation alone does not guarantee earnings.
