Driver assist features are vehicle systems that warn the driver or provide limited help with steering, braking or speed control. They can support safer driving, but most do not drive the car independently: at Levels 0–2 of driving automation, the driver must stay engaged and responsible.
What driver assist features do
Driver assistance covers a range of technologies, from alerts that call attention to a hazard to systems that briefly apply the brakes or adjust steering. Some provide ongoing speed or steering support. The label alone does not tell you which kind of help a vehicle offers; manufacturers may use different names for their systems. NHTSA’s feature guide explains common examples, and the vehicle’s owner’s manual describes how a particular system works.
Warnings versus interventions
- Forward collision warning alerts the driver to a possible collision with a vehicle ahead; it does not itself brake to avoid the crash.
- Automatic emergency braking can apply the brakes when a forward collision is imminent.
- Blind spot warning alerts the driver to a vehicle in an adjacent lane’s blind spot. Blind spot intervention may add braking or steering assistance if the driver begins moving into an occupied lane.
- Lane departure warning alerts the driver to an unintended lane departure; lane keeping assistance can provide corrective control.
Speed and steering assistance
- Adaptive cruise control adjusts speed to maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead.
- Lane centering assistance provides continuing steering inputs to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
Other examples include rear cross traffic warning, rear automatic braking, pedestrian automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, backup cameras and automatic crash notification. Features differ in what they detect and whether they only warn or can control the vehicle.
Are driver assist features self-driving?
No. A car that can assist with both steering and acceleration or braking is still providing Level 2 assistance, not necessarily driving itself. NHTSA says drivers remain fully engaged and responsible at Levels 0, 1 and 2. As the agency puts it: “You, as the driver, are responsible for driving the vehicle.” Read NHTSA’s overview of automation levels for the distinction between assistance and automation.

| Level | What the system does | Driver’s role |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Provides momentary help, such as warnings or emergency interventions. | Remains fully engaged and responsible. |
| 1 | Provides continuous assistance with either steering or acceleration/braking. | Remains fully engaged and responsible. |
| 2 | Provides continuous assistance with both steering and acceleration/braking. | Remains fully engaged and responsible. |
| 3 | Conditional automation: when engaged, the system handles the driving task. | Must remain available to take over if requested. |
Level 3 changes the system’s role when it is engaged, but the driver still has a duty to be available to take over. Do not infer a vehicle’s capabilities or operating conditions from a marketing name; consult its manual.
How to check what a car’s features actually do
- Identify the exact vehicle. Use the model year and trim, since equipment can vary between versions.
- Check the owner’s manual. Look up each feature name to see whether it warns, intervenes, or provides ongoing control, and note the stated operating conditions and limitations.
- Verify equipment on the specific vehicle. Confirm whether each feature is standard or optional for that model year and trim using the automaker’s specifications or the vehicle’s window sticker.
- Keep monitoring the road. Treat assistance as support, not permission to stop paying attention or assume the system will respond in every situation.
What safety statistics do—and don’t—show
NHTSA reports that 39,254 people died in motor vehicle crashes on U.S. roads in 2024. That figure describes total road deaths; it is not a count of deaths that driver-assistance technology could have prevented. It should not be used to infer a specific feature’s effectiveness.
