A cloud scraper is a hosted service that fetches web pages and extracts information for you. You send it a URL and instructions; the service retrieves the page, optionally renders it in a browser, extracts or returns the requested content, and delivers the result. The key choice is whether a simple request can access the information or the page needs JavaScript execution or browser interaction.
What a cloud scraper does
Web scraping means retrieving pages and collecting selected information from them. A cloud scraper runs some or all of that workflow on hosted infrastructure instead of requiring you to operate the fetching or browser environment yourself. Depending on the service and endpoint, the output may be HTML, structured fields, a screenshot, or content gathered across multiple pages.
You still define the task: which pages to access, what information to extract, how often to run the job, and what to do with the results. A hosted service can manage browser execution or parts of request handling, but it does not determine whether the data is useful or whether you are authorized to collect it.
How the cloud-scraping workflow works
- Specify the target and task. Provide a URL or query and, where supported, selectors, a data schema, or an extraction instruction.
- Retrieve the page. For a straightforward page, a basic request may return the needed content. Some services manage request routing and retries as part of their API workflow.
- Render the page if necessary. A headless browser executes JavaScript and can perform actions such as clicking, entering information, or waiting for content to appear.
- Extract and return the result. Depending on the endpoint and configuration, the service may return raw or rendered HTML, selected content, structured data, screenshots, or crawled pages.
- Use or store the result. Some APIs return a result in the request; others support asynchronous jobs or callbacks for larger workloads.
When a scraper needs browser rendering
A simple request may be enough
If the information is already present in the page response, a lighter retrieval method may be sufficient. Running a browser when it is not needed can add operational complexity without helping extract that content.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a browser when the page depends on it
Browser rendering is useful when JavaScript creates the content after the initial response or when the workflow requires a click, form entry, scroll, or wait. It can make browser-level behavior available to the scraper, but it does not guarantee that every site or interaction will succeed.
Cloudflare describes its Browser Run service as enabling developers to “programmatically control and interact with headless browser instances running on Cloudflare’s global network.” Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation was last updated August 11, 2026. Cloud scraper types and how to choose
“Cloud scraper” can refer to different levels of managed control. Cloudflare’s documentation distinguishes stateless Quick Actions from programmable browser sessions, as well as structured extraction and site-wide crawling. Oxylabs documents a Web Scraper API with rendering and browser instructions for interaction-heavy pages. Scrappey describes hosted scraping workflows and extraction outputs. These are examples of vendor-documented approaches, not a comparative performance ranking.
| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Page behavior | Does the target expose the information in its initial response, or require JavaScript, cookies, or browser actions? |
| Control | Will a one-request extraction do the job, or do you need a programmable browser session? |
| Workload | Are you handling a one-off page, a site crawl, or a larger batch that may need asynchronous delivery? |
| Output | Do you need raw or rendered HTML, selected elements, structured fields, screenshots, or crawled content? |
| Integration and localization | Check whether the service supports your automation framework, region-specific results, and preferred way to receive results. |
| Operational fit | Decide how much browser infrastructure and extraction logic your team wants to operate. Vendor documentation describes features, but does not establish a universal cost, speed, reliability, or success-rate comparison. |
How to try a cloud scraping workflow
Start with a page you are permitted to access and identify the exact fields you need. Use the simplest retrieval method that can return those fields; move to browser rendering only if the initial response is missing the content or an interaction is required. Then validate the returned data against the page and choose synchronous or asynchronous delivery to match the workload.

For a visual record of a page rather than extracted text or fields, a screenshot API is a narrower fit. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it returns screenshots or PDFs rather than serving as a general-purpose structured data scraper. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Only clean shots are billed, and responses include headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. See ScreenshotNeo for the service overview.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot or PDF, one GET request can capture a URL. This cURL example saves a WebP image; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can remove cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
Authorization and responsible use
Before collecting data, confirm that your access is authorized and review the target site’s applicable terms and relevant law. Scrappey frames intended use as collection authorized by the content owner or otherwise permitted by applicable law. A service’s technical ability to retrieve a page does not itself establish permission, and this guidance is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. See Scrappey’s documentation for its stated authorized-use framing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every cloud scraper use a headless browser?
No. Some workflows make a direct request, while others render pages in a browser or crawl multiple pages; the approach depends on the service and the target.
Is a screenshot API the same as a cloud scraper?
Not necessarily. A screenshot API returns a visual capture or PDF, while a scraper may return HTML or extracted data. Choose based on the output your task needs.
