Yes. You can monitor some health measures without an implanted device using a wearable, a spot-check monitor, an environmental sensor, or a clinician-directed remote-monitoring program. But avoiding an implant and avoiding wireless or internet connections are separate goals: a noninvasive device may still send data to a phone, provider, or cloud service.

Choose based on the measurement and the decision it needs to support—not simply on whether a product has a health feature. A wellness tracker is not automatically a substitute for a medical device or a prescribed monitoring plan.

First decide what you mean by “networked”

The phrase can describe two different concerns: a device implanted in the body, or a device that transmits readings electronically. Clarify which matters to you before comparing options. If you want to avoid both, check the exact device model and setup; noninvasive does not necessarily mean offline.

Then ask your clinician which measure needs monitoring, how often it needs to be measured, what level of accuracy is needed for the intended decision, and what action should follow a reading or alert. Those answers help distinguish a useful alternative from a device that merely displays a similar-looking metric.

Non-implant options and what they can do

Wearables

Watches, rings, bands, and patches can collect readings continuously or at intervals, depending on the device. The FDA’s selected sensor-based digital health device list includes examples of non- or minimally invasive wearables for monitoring outside clinical settings. FDA cautions: “The list is not a comprehensive resource of sDHT medical devices.” A device appearing on the list does not establish that it suits every condition, and a consumer wearable’s health feature alone does not make it appropriate for clinical decisions.

Spot-check devices

A blood-pressure monitor is one example of a noninvasive device used to take separate readings rather than maintain a continuous stream. The FDA list includes automatic noninvasive blood-pressure monitors. Follow your clinician’s advice on how and when to measure; a spot check does not provide the same pattern of data as a continuously worn sensor.

Ambient or nearable sensors

Some sensors are placed in a person’s surroundings rather than worn or implanted. The U.S. Government Accountability Office describes examples such as motion and pillow sensors in its discussion of wearables and related technologies (GAO assessment). Whether a particular environmental sensor measures something useful for your care is device- and condition-specific; the category alone does not establish clinical suitability.

Clinician-directed remote monitoring

Remote monitoring can let a device acquire physiological data between clinic visits so a healthcare provider can support patient management. FDA describes this approach in its guidance on noninvasive remote-monitoring devices. It is a care model, not a guarantee of offline use: readings may be transmitted electronically. Ask your provider which device, data flow, and follow-up process are involved.

Clinic readings or a manual log

Periodic measurements at a clinic or a manually kept log may be lower-connectivity approaches to discuss with your care team. Their suitability depends on the measure and clinical purpose. A log should not be treated as an equivalent replacement for prescribed continuous monitoring unless your clinician says the change is appropriate.

Check whether a device is for wellness or medical use

GAO distinguishes medical wearables meant for clinical purposes, such as diagnosing or treating a condition, from wellness devices intended to support lifestyle choices. Its assessment of wearable technologies notes that wellness devices are not FDA reviewed for diagnosis or treatment. FDA’s selected device list is useful for examples, but it is not exhaustive. Neither a marketplace listing nor an app showing a health metric proves that a product is suitable for a medical decision.

Compare options before choosing

Option Typical pattern Key question
Wearable sensor Continuous or periodic, depending on device Is this exact model intended for the medical use you need, or for wellness?
Spot-check monitor Separate readings when used Has your clinician specified the measurement method and schedule?
Ambient sensor Depends on placement and device Does it capture the particular measure relevant to your care?
Clinician-directed remote monitoring Readings acquired between visits; transmission may be involved Who receives readings, how are alerts handled, and what connection is required?
Clinic measurement or manual log Periodic measurement or entries Has your clinician confirmed it is adequate instead of the current plan?

For any specific product, also confirm whether it pairs with a phone, needs an account or cloud service, sends readings to a clinician, or can work locally. Check practical requirements such as charging, consumables, and calibration with the manufacturer; these vary by model and configuration.

Understand data connections and privacy

FDA notes that medical devices across implantable, wearable, and at-home categories may use software and connect to the internet, hospital networks, phones, or other devices. The agency’s consumer cybersecurity guidance recommends a unique password, keeping the device updated, and connecting it only to devices or software the manufacturer or healthcare provider says are appropriate. FDA says: “Anytime a medical device has software and relies on a wireless or wired connection, it’s critical to pay close attention for any problems.” Contact the provider or manufacturer about inconsistent readings or unusual device behavior.

Privacy protections also depend on who collects and holds the data. The FTC explains that its Health Breach Notification Rule applies to certain personal-health-record businesses and related entities outside HIPAA; its rule guidance reflects 2024 amendments clarifying application to health apps and similar technologies. Do not assume every health app is covered by HIPAA or that a device with no network connection has no privacy risks. In September 2026, the FTC said it had rescinded its 2021 policy statement on breaches by health apps and connected devices because the 2024 amendments made that statement unnecessary; rely on current rule guidance rather than the rescinded statement (FTC announcement).

What wearable research does—and does not—show

NIH describes a study in which 40 adults wore a commercial smartwatch over many months. In that study, combining wearable data with standard laboratory blood tests could detect early signs of infection through heart-rate changes; the NIH summary says the devices collected more than 250,000 bodily measurements per person per day. These are findings from one study, not proof that consumer smartwatches generally diagnose infection or can replace clinical monitoring (NIH study summary).

Questions to take to your clinician

  • Which physiological measure do I need to track, and what decision will the reading inform?
  • Do I need continuous monitoring, scheduled readings, or occasional spot checks?
  • Is this type of device appropriate for my condition and intended use?
  • Does it require a phone, account, internet connection, or data sharing with a provider?
  • Where are readings stored, who can access them, and what happens when a value triggers an alert?
  • What should I do about a missing, inconsistent, or unusual reading?
  • What wearing, charging, replacement, or calibration tasks does the specific model require?

Do not stop or change prescribed monitoring on the basis of a consumer device or a manual log without discussing the change with your clinician.
