Apple’s eight-minute Underdogs film, shared on October 7, 2025, turns the Windows “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) into a punchline. Its trade-show story shows Windows PCs failing during a widespread outage while the Mac-equipped team keeps working. The joke refers to the 2024 CrowdStrike-related Windows disruption, but the film is fictional advertising—not a reliability test. The claimed “millions of views” figure is not independently confirmed by the available reporting.

What happens in Apple’s BSOD ad

The spot follows Apple’s fictional Underdogs workplace team at a trade show. As a broad PC outage hits, nearby booths display the familiar blue Windows error screen while the team using Macs continues its work. The contrast is designed to make the Mac look dependable under pressure.

Cult of Mac describes the advertisement as an eight-minute short film. The continuing-work scenario and the other booths’ failures are elements of the story Apple created for the campaign; they are not observations from an independent test or a documented event at a real trade show.

Why the ad references CrowdStrike

The visual joke points to the Windows disruption associated with a faulty CrowdStrike security update in 2024. That incident caused widespread operational problems for organizations running affected Windows systems, making the blue error screen an instantly recognizable symbol for the campaign.

The reference does not mean every Windows PC failed, nor does it establish that Macs are immune to comparable software, security or service incidents. It is a topical advertising reference to a particular outage.

Does the video really have millions of views?

The available reporting does not provide a dated view count. Because video counters change and the evidence does not establish a number, “millions of views” should be treated as an unverified headline claim rather than a confirmed historical total.

What the advertisement does—and does not—prove

What it communicates

  • Apple wants business viewers to associate Macs with continuity during a disruptive PC incident.
  • The campaign uses humor and a recognizable Windows error screen to contrast the two platforms.
  • The Underdogs characters provide a fictional workplace narrative rather than a product demonstration.

What it cannot establish

  • It is not a controlled Mac-versus-Windows reliability comparison.
  • It supplies no measured results for uptime, security, recovery time or failure rates.
  • It does not show that a Mac is protected from outages, faulty updates or other security incidents.
  • It does not identify the exact Mac model used in the film.

Which Mac appears in the film?

The cited material does not identify the computer model shown in the advertisement. Apple’s current Apple at Work page promotes MacBook Air for business, so MacBook Air is a reasonable platform to investigate if the campaign has prompted a purchase search. That business positioning is not proof that the ad features a MacBook Air.

How businesses should compare Mac and Windows instead

An IT decision should start with the organization’s requirements, not the punchline in a commercial. Evaluate the following factors for the applications and staff you actually support.

Software and device compatibility

Inventory line-of-business applications, browser requirements, peripherals, drivers and any Windows-only tools. Confirm whether each has a supported macOS version, a browser equivalent, virtualization option or replacement workflow.

Security controls and recovery

Compare endpoint protection, update testing, privilege management, disk encryption, backup, recovery procedures and incident response. A platform decision should include how quickly you can roll back a bad update or restore a user’s work.

Support and lifecycle cost

Include hardware, warranties, accessories, software licensing, help-desk training, repair logistics, replacement cycles and employee downtime. A lower incident rate, if demonstrated in your own environment, is only one part of total cost.

Employee preference and productivity

Survey the roles that will use the devices. Familiarity, accessibility needs and workflow fit can affect adoption and support demand as much as the operating system itself.

A practical way to use the ad as a buying prompt

  1. Identify the trigger. Decide whether the 2024 outage exposed a specific weakness in your update, recovery or communications process.
  2. Document your baseline. Record current failure rates, recovery times, support tickets and application constraints before comparing platforms.
  3. Pilot both environments where feasible. Test representative applications, peripherals, management policies and recovery steps with real users.
  4. Score the business requirements. Weight compatibility, security, management effort, lifecycle cost and user experience according to your organization’s priorities.
  5. Improve resilience regardless of platform. Stage updates, maintain tested backups, retain recovery media or procedures, and define an incident-communication plan.

The bottom line on Apple’s Windows BSOD video

Apple’s “Blue Screen of Death” film is a topical, fictional jab at the 2024 CrowdStrike-associated Windows outage. It may be effective marketing, but the story is not evidence that Macs are universally more reliable, and the available reporting does not verify the “millions of views” claim. Use the ad to start a resilience and platform-fit discussion—not to replace testing, cost analysis or security planning.
