App Sandbox does not make a Mac disk cleaner useless, but it does limit what the app can inspect by default. A sandboxed cleaner can work freely inside its own container; access to other files depends on user-selected locations, permissions such as Full Disk Access, and other macOS protections.
What App Sandbox limits by default
A sandboxed app has unrestricted read and write access to its own container, not to the entire home folder or startup disk. The sandbox is a boundary around the app’s access to files and other system resources; it does not automatically authorize a cleaner to scan everything on the Mac. Apple’s file-access documentation and its App Sandbox overview describe these limits.
That boundary affects the cleaner’s scan scope, not whether it can clean anything at all. It can analyze and remove eligible files in places it is allowed to access. A feature that searches unrelated folders or protected locations needs additional authorization and must be implemented to use that authorization.

How a cleaner can access files beyond its container
User-selected files and folders
Standard macOS interactions, such as choosing a file or folder, can give an app access to the selected resource. Choosing a folder can extend access to its nested contents, although another permission or system protection may still prevent access to a particular item. This gives a cleaner a way to work on locations the user explicitly selects without granting blanket access to the disk. Apple documents user-selected file access.

Access that persists between launches
When an app needs to retain access to a selected location, it can create and store a security-scoped bookmark. On a later launch, the app must resolve that bookmark and start scoped access before using the resource; it should stop access when it is finished. Selecting a folder once does not, by itself, explain whether a particular cleaner can use it indefinitely. That depends on the app’s implementation. Apple’s bookmark guidance describes the required steps.
Full Disk Access
Full Disk Access is a separate permission the user grants in System Settings > Privacy & Security. An app cannot grant it to itself with code or an entitlement. Apple states: “Your app can’t automatically gain full disk access through an entitlement or with code: the person using your app must choose to grant access in System Settings > Privacy & Security.” See Apple’s explanation of file access and Full Disk Access.

A cleaner should handle denied access rather than assume the user will approve the request. If a feature needs this permission, its access request should be explained alongside that feature so the user can decide whether broader access is warranted.

Not necessarily. A cleaner can scan and clean the locations it can already access, or work with folders the user selects. Full Disk Access may be relevant to features that need to inspect broader protected areas, but the app’s actual requirements depend on what it does and how it is built.

Full Disk Access is not a guarantee that every file operation will succeed. POSIX permissions, access control lists, System Integrity Protection, and data protection can also deny access. A scan may therefore omit files even after the user grants the permission. Apple documents these additional restrictions.
Which cleaner features can be affected?
The permission model matters most when a feature promises to scan or modify locations outside the app’s ordinary access. A cleaner that works within authorized folders may still provide useful analysis and removal; broader cleanup depends on obtaining the necessary access and handling it correctly.

- Folder or disk analysis: The results are limited to locations the app can read. Inaccessible areas may be missing from the scan.
- Removal: The app needs permission to modify the selected item, not merely to list it. A file may be visible but still not be removable.
- Cleanup across unrelated protected locations: Such a feature may require a user-selected folder or Full Disk Access, and can remain limited by other macOS protections.
- Actions involving other apps: Apple lists activities incompatible with App Sandbox, including using the Authorization Services API, accessing or modifying another app’s preferences, and terminating other running apps. These restrictions can affect particular cleaner features, but do not mean all cleanup operations are prohibited. Apple’s overview lists sandbox-incompatible activities.
How to evaluate a cleaner’s access claims
A product category or feature list does not establish whether an individual app is sandboxed, which entitlements it has, or what it can access at runtime. For example, DiskCleaner’s vendor documentation lists cleanup, app-uninstall, disk-analysis, system-monitor, optimization, project-purge, and installer-cleanup tools. That description alone does not establish the app’s sandbox configuration or independently verify its file access. DiskCleaner’s documentation is a vendor feature description, not proof of those capabilities.

- Whether it is sandboxed and where it is distributed.
- Which locations it scans without additional user authorization.
- How it asks the user to select files or folders.
- Whether it supports persistent access to selected locations through security-scoped bookmarks.
- Which features request Full Disk Access, and why.
- How it identifies or reports files it could not access.
These checks distinguish a genuine access limitation from a feature that simply does not cover the location you expected.
