A residual current device (RCD) is a protective switching device that disconnects a circuit when it detects residual current reaching a specified value under specified conditions. In practical terms, it can reduce the risk of electric shock by cutting power when electricity takes an unintended path. RCD is the general category; an RCCB and an RCBO are two different kinds of device within it.

What does an RCD do?

An RCD monitors for residual current—current indicating that electricity is flowing along an unintended path—and opens the circuit when its specified operating conditions are met. Disconnecting the supply can reduce the risk of a serious or fatal electric shock, but it does not eliminate shock risk.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) describes residual-current devices as intended primarily to protect against electric-shock hazards. Electrical Safety First likewise describes disconnection when electricity follows an unintended path as a way to reduce fatal-shock risk.

What does “residual current device” mean?

The IET quotes the definition in BS 7671:2008(2013) as: “A mechanical switching device or association of devices intended to cause the opening of the contacts when the residual current attains a given value under specified conditions.” This is the wording from that historical edition of BS 7671, not a claim about the text of the current edition.

GEYA Electromagnetic Residual Current Circuit Breaker Type A ELCB RCD RCCB (2P-63A-30mA)
  • Leakage protection;Suitable for industrial,commercial,high-rise and civil residential and other occasions.
  • When people come across the electric shock or the leakage current of the electrical network exceeds the fixed value, this product can cut off the fault current in short period so as to protect person and the equipments.
  • It also can be used in the infrequent starting of the circuit and motors.
  • Standard:IEC61008-1、GB16916.1

In plain language, the device responds to residual current and opens the circuit. The definition describes what it is intended to do; it does not by itself specify which device is suitable for a particular installation.

What is the difference between an RCD, an RCCB and an RCBO?

RCD is the generic term. RCCB and RCBO identify device types distinguished by whether they include integral overcurrent protection.

Term Meaning Integral overcurrent protection?
RCD Generic category of residual-current devices Depends on the specific device
RCCB Residual-current circuit-breaker No
RCBO Residual-current circuit-breaker with overcurrent protection Yes

An RCCB provides residual-current protection; an RCBO combines that function with overcurrent protection. The IEC’s 2024 standards catalogue distinguishes RCCBs without integral overcurrent protection in IEC 61008-1:2024 from RCBOs with integral overcurrent protection in IEC 61009-1:2024.

IEC 61009-1:2024 RCBOs with integral overcurrent protection Up to 440 V AC, 125 A and rated short-circuit capacity up to 25,000 A

The broader safety framing appears in IEC 60755:2017, which covers general requirements for residual-current-operated protective devices.

Does a portable RCD protect an entire installation?

No—not simply because it is portable. Electrical Safety First’s 2025 landlords’ guide for England and Wales says a portable RCD protects equipment connected through its special socket-outlet, including the equipment’s lead. That stated coverage should not be read as protection for every circuit or item in the wider installation.

What should you know before acting on the definition?

This is a general explanation, not installation or wiring advice. Requirements depend on the installation, device and jurisdiction. For example, the Electrical Safety First guide cited above applies to landlords in England and Wales; its guidance should not be treated as a universal rule for other locations. Consult current local requirements and the device manufacturer’s instructions, and use a qualified electrician for installation or testing questions.
