An AI inference engine loads a model’s weights and uses them to compute outputs from supplied inputs. In production, it is only one part of the serving stack—not the whole security boundary. Weaknesses in the engine, host, surrounding services, or access controls can expose model assets or sensitive information, but prompt injection is not, by itself, evidence that anyone stole the model’s weights.
What an AI inference engine does
A trained model’s weights encode learned parameters. At inference time, the engine loads those weights and processes an input to produce an output. Depending on the application, that input might be a prompt, an image, or another supported data type; the result might be text, a classification, or a prediction.
The engine runs within a larger system. An application handles user interaction and may call external services. Input handling can validate requests and check authorization; output handling can filter or redact responses. Policy enforcement and audit logging also belong in the broader model layer. OWASP’s AI threat-model guidance distinguishes these components rather than treating the inference engine as the complete security boundary.
What a vulnerability can expose—or disrupt
AI security involves confidentiality, integrity, and availability. NIST discusses these concerns alongside attacks such as model extraction and membership inference; OWASP’s input-threat guidance also covers sensitive-data disclosure, model exfiltration, and resource exhaustion. These risks have different mechanisms and consequences, so “the model was exposed” is not a sufficiently precise diagnosis.

Direct access to the runtime or infrastructure
If an attacker gains access to a serving host, model storage, or the runtime process, they may be able to reach model files or parameters directly. Whether that is possible depends on the deployment’s architecture, permissions, and isolation. An inference endpoint alone does not establish that an attacker can read the files on the machine running it.
Extraction or inference through queries
Repeated or carefully chosen queries may reveal information about a model’s behavior, parameters, or whether particular data was used in training. These attacks are not all equivalent, and a query interface does not automatically make practical recovery of a complete model possible. NIST’s AI security and resilience research describes model extraction and membership inference among the relevant security concerns.

Sensitive information returned in an output
A deployed model may produce information that should not be disclosed. This is an output-disclosure problem: the response itself is sensitive, whether or not anyone accessed the model weights. Limiting unnecessary sensitive data in the system and filtering or redacting outputs can reduce this risk. OWASP’s AI input-threat guidance covers sensitive-data extraction and disclosure in model outputs.
Prompt injection and other instruction manipulation
When a system does not reliably distinguish instructions from untrusted data, malicious content can influence what the model does at inference time. That is a behavior-control risk. It may lead to further harm if the model can use tools or access data, but it is not synonymous with theft of model parameters. NIST discusses this instruction-and-data separation issue in NIST AI 100-2e2025.

Service disruption
Abusive traffic or unusually expensive requests can exhaust resources or degrade service availability without breaching confidentiality. OWASP includes resource exhaustion among the threats that can arise through use of an AI system. This risk calls for operational safeguards as well as protections for model files and data.
Controls that reduce exposure opportunities
No single safeguard secures an inference deployment. OWASP’s Secure AI/ML Model Ops guidance addresses protections across the environment and runtime; its threat-model guidance also identifies model-layer controls.

Restrict access and isolate workloads
- Authenticate callers and authorize what each caller may do; apply input validation and rate limits at the serving boundary.
- Use least privilege for inference jobs and restrict host and network access to what the workload requires.
- Harden containers, isolate untrusted workloads, and keep development, staging, and production environments separate.
- Review tenant and workload isolation, including the risks of shared accelerators, rather than assuming that a hosted or containerized deployment is isolated by default.
Protect data in memory and in outputs
- Where the platform supports it, clear inputs, outputs, caches, and accelerator memory after use.
- Minimize sensitive data passed to the model, and filter or redact outputs when they could disclose information that should remain private.
- Consider what the model can reach through tools or external services: instruction manipulation can have consequences beyond the text of a response when those capabilities are available.
Monitor the system and its changes
- Scan and harden deployment components, and collect usage telemetry that can help identify abusive or anomalous activity.
- Audit relevant events and model versions so operators can investigate which deployment served a request and what changed.
- Assess the lifecycle—including deployment, orchestration, and monitoring—not only the model artifact. OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard provides a framework for security verification across AI systems.
Questions to ask about a hosted or self-managed deployment
The label “hosted” or “self-managed” does not, on its own, establish how well a system protects a model or its users’ data. Compare deployments by asking who controls the runtime and infrastructure, where weights and inputs and outputs reside, how tenant and workload isolation works, what access controls and monitoring are in place, and how those controls are independently tested. NIST emphasizes that AI systems also inherit conventional software and infrastructure risks to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
- Runtime and infrastructure: Which party operates each layer, and who can access the hosts and model storage?
- Data location: Where do weights, inputs, outputs, and caches reside, and what is the retention and clearing behavior?
- Isolation: How are tenants and untrusted workloads separated, including when accelerators are shared?
- Access and visibility: How are callers authorized, requests limited, and relevant activity logged?
- Verification: What evidence shows that safeguards are implemented and tested for the deployment in question?
NIST puts the broader point plainly: “The trustworthiness of AI technologies depends in part on how secure they are.”
