For software development, the practical lesson is to treat an AI model’s context as a limited working space: include the information needed for the next task, retrieve other files when needed, break broad changes into steps, and preserve decisions outside the conversation.
What an AI context window is—and what it is not
A context window is the token budget available to a model for a request or interaction. It is working input, not the model’s entire training corpus, and it is not a guarantee that everything inside it will be understood equally well.
What consumes that budget depends on the model and interface. Anthropic says Claude API context can include system prompts, messages, tool definitions and results, images, documents, and generated output. In OpenAI’s Codex agent-loop description, tool outputs are appended to the prompt and conversation history is included on a later turn. In a coding session, command output, plans, instructions, and earlier discussion can therefore compete with source code for room. Check the current documentation for the specific model and product rather than assuming one provider’s accounting applies everywhere: Anthropic’s context-window documentation and OpenAI’s description of the Codex agent loop.
A larger limit raises the ceiling on what can fit; it does not establish that a model will retrieve, connect, or reason about every included detail reliably. Google’s Gemini documentation describes some models with context windows of 1 million or more tokens—illustrated as roughly 50,000 lines of code at 80 characters per line—but availability and limits are model-specific and can change. The same documentation cautions that finding multiple pieces of information can be less reliable than finding one, and advises against including unnecessary tokens. Longer inputs can also increase time to first token. See Google’s current long-context guidance for model-specific details.

Does adding more tokens reduce answer quality?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Extra context can supply necessary evidence, but it also gives the model more material to search and relate. Performance depends on the task, the model, the placement of relevant details, and how the system uses tools and conversation history.
In the peer-reviewed 2024 study “Lost in the Middle,” Nelson F. Liu and coauthors tested language models on multi-document question answering and key-value retrieval. Across many tested conditions, models did better when relevant information appeared near the beginning or end than when it was buried in the middle. The authors wrote that performance could degrade significantly when relevant information changed position. This is evidence of a failure mode in the study’s tested models and tasks—not proof that every current coding assistant behaves the same way. Anthropic describes declining recall with growing context as a practical context-engineering challenge and recommends keeping the input informative but tight. That framing is more useful than treating “context rot” as one universal metric: models need not degrade at the same rate, and a context limit alone does not predict the quality of a particular answer. See Anthropic’s guidance on context engineering for agents.
Why repository-level coding makes context limits visible
A code change often depends on details spread across files: a public interface, a caller, tests, configuration, or a project convention. The assistant must identify which details matter, keep dependencies in view, and retain the task goal while it explores. A repository can appear to fit beneath a model’s token ceiling while the live conversation still fills with tool descriptions, terminal output, file excerpts, and earlier turns.

A 2026 preprint by Ravi Raju, Mengmeng Ji, Shubhangi Upasani, Bo Li, and Urmish Thakker examined automated bug fixing. In its specific setup, the tested models did poorly when asked to generate a patch in one shot from 64,000-token inputs—even when relevant files were provided. The authors reported a 7% resolve rate for Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B at 64k context and zero tasks solved by GPT-5-nano in that single-shot setup. These are results for the paper’s models, harness, and benchmark, not a general estimate of coding-assistant performance.
The paper also compared those tests with agentic SWE-bench Verified trajectories. Successful trajectories in the authors’ setup tended to remain below 20,000 accumulated tokens, and the authors interpret decomposition as a major part of the evaluated agentic success. They report failure modes including hallucinated diffs and incorrect file targets. This distinction matters: an agent that explores, acts, and checks results in stages is not equivalent to a single prompt containing a long transcript and a request for a patch. The paper is a 2026 preprint noted as accepted to an ICLR 2026 workshop; its findings should be read within that scope: “The Limits of Long-Context Reasoning in Automated Bug Fixing”.

Three ways to supply repository context
There is no best approach for every task. A large static prompt is simple when the relevant material is known and stable; retrieval can target likely files; and tool-enabled exploration lets an agent discover context as it works. A hybrid can preload stable project guidance and retrieve changing details on demand.
| Approach | When it helps | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Large static context | Relevant files and documentation are known, fit within the limit, and are unlikely to change during the task. | Can expose useful cross-file relationships without exploration, but adds material the model may not need and does not guarantee reliable retrieval. Google documents large-context use cases; Liu et al. show that more input is not automatically more useful on their tested tasks. |
| Retrieve likely relevant files first | The task points toward identifiable components, callers, tests, or documentation. | Can keep the request focused, but depends on finding the right files and a current index or retrieval method. Anthropic discusses pre-retrieval as one context strategy. |
| Concise background plus agent exploration | The relevant files are uncertain or the task needs iterative inspection, changes, and verification. | Can fetch current details as needed, but exploration adds time and depends on capable tools and search heuristics. A hybrid approach can preload stable instructions and retrieve repository details on demand. |
The approaches and their trade-offs reflect guidance from Google and Anthropic, alongside the long-context findings of Liu et al. Retrieval may reduce stale or irrelevant material, but it can add exploration time. Static context is convenient, but may become stale or obscure important details among less useful ones.

Practical habits for AI-assisted development
- Give the next step a clear scope. State the desired change, relevant constraints, and what counts as a successful result. Keep project instructions concise and informative, following Anthropic’s context-engineering guidance.
- Make the repository navigable. Provide useful file paths and tools so the assistant can inspect relevant code rather than pasting the entire repository into every request. A small amount of stable context plus on-demand retrieval can balance freshness and orientation, though it requires good tooling and can take more time.
- Split broad changes into bounded tasks. Ask for investigation, a focused implementation, and then verification as distinct steps when appropriate. The 2026 bug-fixing preprint supports decomposition in its tested setting; it does not prove that splitting every task will improve every result.
- Keep durable project notes. For work that spans sessions or context windows, preserve architecture decisions, constraints, unresolved issues, and progress in a maintained note or project document. Compaction can summarize old conversation and clear bulky tool results, but review summaries: omitted details may matter later.
- Inspect the result, not just the explanation. Review changed files, run relevant tests, and check that the patch targets the intended code. A fluent response does not establish that cross-file dependencies were handled correctly.
How to judge coding benchmarks
A benchmark score is meaningful only if the tasks and tests measure what the benchmark claims to measure. In a July 8, 2026 audit of the public SWE-Bench Pro split, OpenAI reported that its automated pipeline flagged 200 of 731 tasks (27.4%), while its human annotation campaign identified 249 of 731 (34.1%). Those figures describe OpenAI’s audit methods and that dataset, not every task in SWE-Bench Pro or coding benchmarks generally. They are a reason to examine task statements, test validity, and failure modes when interpreting results—not to discard benchmark evidence wholesale. See OpenAI’s audit and methodology.
