Deleting an AI-assistant chat does not necessarily delete everything the service knows, saved, or derived from it. A conversation, a saved memory or instruction, activity history, an uploaded file, a connected-app record, and model-training controls are usually separate systems or settings. Each provider has its own deletion timetable and exceptions.
This guide explains what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude currently document about those layers, what each control actually does, and how to remove information as completely as the available controls allow. The guidance described here is from provider documentation current in 2026; consumer and managed-workspace settings can change.
“Memory” is not one universal feature
AI services use “memory” to describe different kinds of personalization. In one product it may mean a list of saved facts; in another it may include instructions or references to old conversations. A chat that appears in your history is not automatically the same thing as a saved memory, and neither is necessarily the same as an activity log used for safety, analytics, or model improvement.
ChatGPT: saved memories and chat-history reference are separate
OpenAI describes saved memories as details you ask ChatGPT to remember, or details it saves as useful context when the feature is available. Those memories are stored separately from chat history. ChatGPT can also reference information from past chats as a distinct personalization source. That reference may change over time as older conversations are used or excluded.

Some accounts show an “Improved Memory” summary alongside older, explicit saved-memory items. Names, placement, and availability vary by plan, platform, and account. A memory can therefore survive after the conversation in which it originated has been deleted.
Gemini: saved instructions, facts, and activity-based personalization
Google says Gemini can remember facts, interests, and preferences across conversations when the feature is available and enabled. Saved instructions (called “Saved info” in some regions) remain until you remove them. Gemini may also use eligible past chats in Gemini Apps Activity to personalize responses. These are different sources even though they can produce a similar result: the assistant appears to know something about you.
Claude: published deletion guidance is narrower
Anthropic’s consumer guidance explains how to delete conversations and how long backend deletion can take. That page does not provide a complete description of a persistent-memory system comparable to every ChatGPT or Gemini feature. Do not assume that a Claude conversation, a separate account record, or data in another service all follow the same control simply because they are accessed through Claude.

- The conversation: the messages shown in chat history.
- A saved memory or instruction: a reusable fact or preference kept for future replies.
- Activity history: a provider’s record of chats, shared media, feedback, usage, or related events.
- Files: an uploaded document or image saved in a separate library.
- Connected services: records pulled from an integrated app or another provider product.
- Safety, security, or review systems: copies or derived records retained under the provider’s policies.
- Managed-workspace records: retention or compliance copies controlled by an employer, school, or administrator.
Deleting a chat removes only the category covered by that particular command. If the provider says another category is separate, you must use its separate control. A deletion request also may be scheduled rather than completed immediately.
What ChatGPT deletion controls do
Remove a saved memory and its source chat
OpenAI says deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. To remove a remembered fact, open ChatGPT’s memory or personalization controls and delete the individual memory (or use the available clear-all option). Then delete the conversation in which you supplied the information if you no longer want that source retained.
OpenAI also identifies Library files and connected apps as possible sources. Check the Library separately for saved uploads, and review each connected service’s controls. Removing a chat does not automatically remove a copy of a file saved in the Library.
Turn off reference to chat history
ChatGPT’s reference-to-chat-history setting is separate from saved memories. OpenAI says that turning it off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to the provider’s stated exceptions. The original chats remain in your history unless you delete them separately. Turning off chat-history reference does not delete saved memories.

Memory changes and deletion can take time to propagate. During that period, responses may not immediately reflect the new state.
Delete chats and understand the 30-day window
OpenAI’s current help guidance says a deleted chat is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from the user, or longer retention is required for security or legal obligations. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. These are policy timeframes, not a guarantee that every technical copy disappears at the same instant.
Do not confuse training controls with deletion
The Improve the model for everyone control addresses whether new conversations are used to improve OpenAI’s models. Turning it off does not delete chats already saved in your history, memories, files, or connected-app records. It is a model-improvement choice, not an erasure command.
Use Temporary Chat for a different retention profile
Temporary Chat does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models. OpenAI says temporary chats may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Temporary Chat is therefore not the same as immediate, irreversible deletion.

Managed workspaces can override consumer expectations
Business, education, and other managed workspaces may apply organization-level retention, memory, compliance, and access settings. If the account is administered by someone else, check the workspace policy or ask the administrator what records they can retain and export.
What Gemini deletion controls do
Control Gemini Apps Activity
Google says Gemini Apps Activity can include chats and shared files, videos, screens, and photos. Depending on settings and use, it can also include audio, Gemini Live media, feedback, information from websites visited with Gemini, product usage, and location information.
In Gemini Apps Activity controls, auto-delete can be set to a default of 18 months, or to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. You can also delete selected activity or all available activity manually. Those choices concern activity records; they do not automatically erase every record in another Google service.

Remove saved information separately
Delete facts, interests, or preferences from Gemini’s saved-information or saved-instructions controls. A deleted chat can otherwise leave a separately saved instruction in place. Likewise, removing activity does not necessarily remove a file, account record, or content stored elsewhere in your Google account.

Understand Keep Activity off
When Keep Activity is off, Google says future chats will not appear in Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to send feedback. Google still saves those chats for 72 hours so Gemini can respond, process feedback, and protect Google and its users. Keep Activity off is therefore a forward-looking setting with a short operational-retention period, not an immediate purge of previous activity.
Human-reviewed data has a separate retention rule
Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers, and related data disconnected from the account, are not deleted when you delete activity. Reviewed data may be retained for up to three years. Deleting Gemini activity also does not remove records saved in other Google services.

Delete a consumer conversation
Anthropic says prompts and conversations remain available in your dashboard until you delete them. A deleted conversation is immediately removed from conversation history and automatically deleted from Anthropic’s backend within 30 days.

Anthropic also notes that backend data may be retained for periods specified in its Privacy Policy when needed to enforce usage policies, address terms or policy violations, or comply with law. The published consumer guidance establishes conversation-deletion behavior; it does not, by itself, describe every possible storage category or a universal memory control.

These periods cover different products and data categories. They are not directly comparable promises of complete erasure and should not be added together.
A practical deletion checklist
- Identify the source. Decide whether the information is in a saved memory or instruction, a chat, activity history, an uploaded file, a connected app, or a managed workspace.
- Delete the saved item. Use the provider’s memory, personalization, or saved-information control.
- Delete the source conversation. Do this separately where the provider treats chats and memories as independent.
- Inspect files and integrations. Remove Library copies and check the connected app or other provider service for its own record.
- Review activity and training settings. Set auto-delete or disable activity where appropriate, but treat training opt-outs as separate from deletion.
- Check the retention notice. Record the provider’s stated timetable and exceptions rather than expecting instant erasure.
- Check account type. A work or school administrator may control retention and access beyond consumer settings.
What deletion policies still do not establish
Provider help pages do not offer a complete technical inventory of every backup, derived representation, safety record, or internal retention process for every assistant. A published 30-day window does not prove that all traces vanish at a precise moment, nor does it establish that deleted information could never affect a model or an aggregate system. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the provider describes what its user-facing control is intended to remove, when that process is scheduled to occur, and which exceptions remain.
Bottom line
For reliable cleanup, treat memory, chats, activity, files, connected services, training choices, and workspace records as separate layers. Delete each layer that contains the information, then allow for the provider’s published retention period and exceptions. Disabling personalization or model improvement can change future use, but neither setting is automatically a command to erase what was already stored.
