A silicon-based sensor chip distinguished two bacteria in laboratory blood samples—but it was a 2015 proof-of-concept, not a validated test for patients. The researchers tested blood spiked with Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus; the work does not show that the chip detects every dangerous pathogen or is available for clinical use.
What the silicon chip detects
Houyu Wang and colleagues reported a multifunctional chip that captured and distinguished E. coli and S. aureus in experimental blood samples. Contemporary coverage specifies that the samples were spiked with one of the bacteria, rather than collected from patients being evaluated for infection. The study therefore supports detection of those two named bacteria under laboratory conditions—not broad pathogen screening in people.
The paper, “Simultaneous Capture, Detection, and Inactivation of Bacteria as Enabled by a Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Multifunctional Chip,” appeared in Angewandte Chemie International Edition in 2015. PubMed’s record of the study provides the abstract and bibliographic details.

How the SERS chip works
A silver-coated silicon sensing surface
The researchers fabricated the platform from a silicon wafer decorated with silver nanoparticles. They used chemical reduction assisted by hydrogen fluoride etching, then attached 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) to the silver through Ag–S bonds. The modified surface was used to capture bacteria.

Raman signals help distinguish bacteria
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering, or SERS, amplifies Raman signals from molecules near metal nanostructures. In this design, the silver nanoparticles provided the signal-enhancing surface, while the bacterial capture chemistry brought target organisms close to it. The resulting spectral signals were used to discriminate the bacteria.
Capture, detection, and inactivation in one platform
The authors also reported antibacterial activity associated with the chip. These are three functions demonstrated in a research platform; they do not mean the device is a conventional blood-culture test or that it can diagnose and treat an infection in a patient.

What the study’s numbers mean
The following figures are experimental results reported by Wang and colleagues in the 2015 study’s abstract, not clinical estimates from patient testing.

Why this is not yet a patient blood test
A laboratory demonstration in spiked blood does not establish how the chip performs on real patient specimens, where target bacteria may be scarce and blood contains many potentially interfering substances. The contemporary account notes that Imperial College London researcher Philip Howes described the challenge as “discriminating a needle in a haystack” and identified testing actual clinical samples as an important next step. His comments were made in the 2015 report, not after a later validation study.

The sources describing this chip do not report a patient diagnostic trial, clinical sensitivity or specificity, clinical outcomes, regulatory approval, or a commercial product. The work offers a research approach with potential relevance to rapid bacterial identification, but it does not show that clinicians can use it to diagnose infection or sepsis.

“Silicon chip” describes a platform material, not a single detection method. Other research has used different approaches and targets, so its findings should not be attributed to Wang and colleagues’ SERS chip.

These are separate research platforms, not a head-to-head comparison. The studies address different organisms and sensing mechanisms, and their results cannot establish that one method is faster, more accurate, or more clinically useful than another.
