What is a deep learning library? It is software that provides reusable tools for building, training, evaluating, and often deploying neural-network models. Instead of implementing every mathematical operation yourself, you can use components such as tensor operations, neural-network layers, automatic differentiation, and optimization routines.

What a deep learning library provides

A deep learning library supplies building blocks for working with neural networks. Its components typically cover several stages of a model workflow:

  • Tensor operations: Tensors hold and manipulate model inputs, outputs, and parameters. Libraries may optimize these operations for CPUs, GPUs, or other supported accelerators.
  • Layers and models: Reusable components let you assemble a neural network without writing every operation from scratch.
  • Automatic differentiation: The system calculates gradients that indicate how model parameters affect an output or loss.
  • Optimization: Training routines use those gradients to update model parameters.
  • Data and workflow utilities: Tools may help load and transform data, evaluate models, tune settings, and save or deploy trained models.

These pieces work together: data is prepared and passed through a model, the model produces an output, gradients help measure how its parameters should change, and an optimizer applies updates during training.

What is a deep learning framework?

“Deep learning library,” “API,” and “framework” are not consistently separated labels. They often describe overlapping parts of a software ecosystem, so it is more useful to ask what a tool actually provides than to infer its capabilities from its name.

For example, PyTorch documentation describes PyTorch as “an optimized tensor library for deep learning using GPUs and CPUs.” Its documentation covers tensors, neural networks, automatic differentiation, optimization, and accelerator APIs. The PyTorch project page also calls it an open-source deep-learning framework, illustrating that the two labels can apply to the same system.

TensorFlow documentation calls Keras “the high-level API of the TensorFlow platform.” Keras 3 is a Python deep-learning API that can use JAX, TensorFlow, or PyTorch as a backend. In this arrangement, the API provides an interface for building models, while a backend supplies the underlying execution capabilities. The terms can describe different layers of a stack, even when their surrounding ecosystems overlap.

How a library fits into model training

A typical workflow begins with data and ends with a saved model. PyTorch’s beginner guide presents a sequence that includes working with tensors, loading and transforming data, building a model, using automatic differentiation and optimization, and saving or loading the trained model.

  1. Prepare data: Load examples and transform them into forms the model can use.
  2. Build the model: Combine layers or other operations into a neural network.
  3. Train: Run data through the model, calculate gradients, and use an optimizer to adjust parameters.
  4. Evaluate: Check how the trained model performs on the relevant task and data.
  5. Save or deploy: Store the trained model or put it into a suitable serving environment.

A library can supply tools for several or all of these stages, but the exact workflow and available utilities differ by product.

How to choose a deep learning library

There is no universal best choice established by these tools’ documentation. Compare the practical fit for your project:

  • Interface and learning curve: Consider whether a high-level API with ready-made layers and model abstractions suits you, or whether you need more direct control over operations.
  • Hardware support: Check support for your intended CPU or accelerator, along with any required software stack. A general claim of GPU support does not establish that a particular device or configuration will work.
  • Ecosystem: Look at the model, data, and domain-specific tools available for the work you plan to do.
  • Workflow coverage: Determine whether the tools cover the stages you need, from data preparation and training to evaluation and deployment.
  • Deployment requirements: Check compatibility with your target devices, serving environment, and scaling needs.

Documentation can describe supported capabilities, but it does not establish which option will perform best for a specific workload. For a speed or memory comparison, look for results measured on the model, data, hardware, and software configuration that matter to your project.

A practical way to learn the basics

Start with a small example and follow the full workflow rather than focusing only on model layers. PyTorch’s Learn the Basics guide is organized around tensors, data, model creation, parameter optimization, and saving a trained model. That sequence helps connect the library’s individual components to the job they perform in training.
