A dedicated video card is a graphics solution with a GPU separate from the computer’s main processor and its own graphics memory. It is also commonly called a discrete GPU. In a desktop PC, it usually means a separate card installed in a motherboard slot; in a laptop, the discrete GPU may be built into the system rather than supplied as a removable card.
What “dedicated video card” means
“Dedicated” describes the graphics hardware’s relationship to the processor: its GPU is separate from the CPU and has dedicated graphics memory. The terms dedicated graphics and discrete graphics are generally used interchangeably in consumer specifications. Intel defines integrated graphics as a GPU built into the processor, while discrete graphics is separate and has its own memory. Intel’s integrated-versus-discrete graphics explanation was last reviewed September 4, 2024.
GPU, graphics card, and video card: what is the difference?
A GPU is the graphics processor itself. A graphics card—also called a video card—is the board that contains a GPU and supporting components. On a desktop, that board typically connects to a PCI Express slot. So the GPU is a component of the card, not another name for the entire card. Intel’s GPU overview explains the distinction.
Dedicated versus integrated graphics
| Graphics type | Where the GPU is | Memory | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated | Built into the processor | Shares system memory with the CPU | Uses less power and generates less heat in Intel’s general comparison |
| Dedicated (discrete) | Separate from the processor | Has dedicated graphics memory | Can provide higher performance for graphics work, but uses more power and generates more heat in Intel’s general comparison |
These are architectural distinctions, not a guarantee that every dedicated GPU will outperform every integrated GPU in every program. The result depends on the specific hardware and workload. Memory capacity, power use, cooling, and the computer’s design also vary by model.
#1 Best Overall
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
What a dedicated GPU is used for
A separate graphics processor can be useful for demanding graphics workloads. Microsoft lists gaming, design, and intensive photo or video editing as examples of tasks suited to discrete GPUs. That does not mean any particular GPU will meet a specific game or application’s requirements: check the software maker’s requirements against the exact computer or GPU model. Microsoft’s overview of GPUs describes common uses.
Does a dedicated video card have to be a separate desktop card?
No. Desktop computers commonly use a separate add-in card, but discrete graphics can also be found in laptops and small-form-factor PCs. In a laptop, graphics hardware may be integrated into the system’s design rather than installed as a user-removable card. Some laptop configurations also use the discrete GPU to render graphics while the integrated GPU manages display output; NVIDIA describes this arrangement in its Optimus technology overview. The physical form and display routing depend on the computer.

How to tell whether a computer has dedicated graphics
- Look in the computer’s specifications for wording such as “discrete graphics,” “dedicated graphics,” or a separately named GPU.
- Check the exact GPU model and the computer maker’s specifications. A separate GPU name alone does not establish its memory capacity, performance, or compatibility with a particular application.
- For a desktop card, confirm that the card fits the case and is supported by the computer’s motherboard, power supply, and cooling. For a laptop, verify the configuration as sold; the graphics hardware may not be replaceable.
- Compare the GPU with the requirements of the software or games you plan to use rather than assuming that “dedicated” means suitable for every graphics workload.
