It should define how the grid gets and interprets the value, then support the right sorting, filtering, editing, grouping, display, and data-exchange behavior for that meaning. A formatted label is not necessarily the value the grid should compare.
What does a data-grid column type need to know?
At minimum, a column definition needs an identity and a way to retrieve its value. For typed technical data, it also needs to describe the value’s shape and meaning closely enough that each grid operation can handle it correctly. A numeric measurement, calendar date, timestamp, enum, nullable value, and structured object are not interchangeable just because each can be displayed as text.
This is operational metadata, not merely a label for a column. AG Grid documents cell data types that configure rendering, editing, filtering, sorting, row grouping, and import/export behavior together. MUI column definitions offer related building blocks such as types, value getters and formatters, renderers, comparators, and filter operators. In a headless table such as TanStack Table, accessor columns supply data for table operations, while display columns are for presentation-only content such as actions or checkboxes.
- Access: Which row value does this column expose, and does it need to derive one?
- Semantics: What does that value mean, what is its data shape, and which distinctions must be preserved?
- Operations: Which sorting, filtering, editing, grouping, aggregation, and exchange behaviors are valid for it?
- Presentation: How should that value appear to a person, and does it need a custom renderer?
The APIs differ by library; the useful design principle is to make the value’s meaning and each supported operation agree. See the AG Grid cell data types documentation, MUI column definition documentation, and TanStack Table v8 columns guide.

Why separate stored values from what users see?
A grid needs a meaningful value for comparison and a suitable representation for display; those are often different things. A timestamp might be stored in a canonical form but shown in local time. A measurement might be stored numerically but rendered with a unit and a chosen precision. Sorting a formatted string can produce a different order from sorting the underlying number or instant.
MUI explicitly distinguishes these roles: its valueFormatter changes the rendered representation, while sorting and filtering use the raw row value or a value returned by valueGetter. Its renderCell can return a React node, which is another reason not to treat visual output as the canonical data value.

- Retrieve or derive the typed value from the row.
- Run operations such as sorting and filtering against that value using rules appropriate to its semantics.
- Format or render the result for the user, without replacing the underlying value with its display label.
How should editing turn input into a typed value?
Editing needs a defined path in both directions: how input text becomes the stored value, and how that value is presented when the cell is edited or viewed again. Without that contract, a grid can display one representation while storing another unintentionally.
AG Grid’s built-in cell data types set parsers and formatters. Its documentation says object-valued cells need a value formatter and, when editing is enabled, a parser because the right behavior depends on the object’s structure. This illustrates why a structured value should not be treated like an arbitrary string.

For technical data, decide explicitly how the implementation handles invalid input, empty values, precision, and units. These are design choices that depend on the domain: the cited grid documentation establishes the role of types and parsers, but does not prescribe one universal policy for every measurement or application.
What does “date” mean in a grid?
Distinguish a calendar date from an instant or date-time. A calendar date such as a due date may have no meaningful time component; an instant represents a point on a timeline, often with a time zone or offset involved. If a type name does not capture the distinction, comparisons and filters can surprise users.

AG Grid documents that its date type compares complete JavaScript Date objects, including their time components. It warns that non-midnight times can produce unexpected filtering or editing behavior and advises normalizing times for consistent built-in filters. If time matters, its documentation suggests considering dateTime or a custom comparator. See AG Grid’s cell data type guidance for the library-specific behavior.
How do cell renderers affect accessibility and state?
A rich renderer is still part of a grid’s keyboard and screen-reader experience, not just a miniature standalone interface. MUI advises that cell content should not enter the tab sequence unless its cell has focus. It also documents the rowHeader option for cells that identify a row, so assistive technology can receive row-header semantics.

Virtualization and pagination affect component lifetime as well as performance. MUI notes that cells can be unmounted when scrolling or switching pages. State that must survive those changes should live in grid-level or parent state rather than only inside an individual cell renderer. See MUI’s column definition documentation.
What changes in a headless table?
A headless table can provide data modeling and operations without owning the rendered interface. TanStack Table v8 distinguishes accessor columns, which have an underlying data model and can participate in sorting, filtering, and grouping, from display columns, which can hold arbitrary presentation such as checkboxes or action buttons. Preserve that distinction in your design even if another framework uses different API names.
Virtualized layouts introduce another responsibility: the set of rendered columns and rows changes as visibility, table state, or scrolling changes. TanStack’s React virtualization guide describes using the current visible-column list and recomputing virtualized rows or columns as relevant table state changes. See the TanStack virtualization guide.
How to define a column type for your domain
Before choosing a library-specific type or writing a custom one, document the domain rules the column must preserve. “Technical data” does not identify a single schema: units, precision, null handling, and server-side processing depend on the application.
Quick Recap
- Specify the canonical value. Record its shape, valid range or variants, precision, nullability, and whether it represents a date, instant, or another concept.
- Define input and validation. State how user input is parsed, how invalid or empty input is handled, and whether unit conversion is allowed.
- Choose operation rules. Define how values compare, filter, group, or aggregate; do not assume that display text supplies the right rule.
- Define presentation separately. Specify formatting, units, truncation, and any renderer behavior without losing the canonical value.
- Check interaction and lifecycle. Verify keyboard focus and screen-reader semantics, and put persistent state outside renderer components that may be unmounted.
- Decide where processing happens. If operations run on a server rather than in the browser, ensure the same value semantics are represented in the request and response contract.
