A “black card” usually means the American Express Centurion Card, often called the Amex Black Card, but the phrase is not one standardized product name. Centurion is invitation-only: American Express Global Network policy describes selected customers as candidates, including cardmembers with USD 150,000 in annual spend history and/or premium bank customers whose financial portfolio supports a USD 150,000 credit line. Those figures are issuer selection criteria, not a guaranteed route to an invitation.
What does “black card” mean?
The phrase most often refers to the American Express Centurion Card. It can also refer to other premium cards marketed with “Black” in the name, or to any card that happens to be black. Color alone does not indicate a particular issuer, benefit level, or eligibility standard.
For example, Mastercard lists a US product called the Mastercard Black Card. It has its own online application route and terms; it is not the Centurion Card. Who may qualify for the Amex Centurion Card?
American Express Global Network Services’ October 2023 Business and Operational Policies Manual describes Centurion acquisition as invitation-only, using pre-approved applications for selected customers. Its listed target groups include:

These are issuer-policy criteria for selecting prospective customers, not a public personal-eligibility checklist. The manual does not promise that a person who reaches either figure will be invited. It also describes prerequisites for the issuer: it must already issue The Platinum Card, meet contractual performance levels, comply with American Express policies, and have a sizable Platinum Card base in its market. American Express does not publish a Centurion scoring formula in the cited material. Its general US application FAQ says decisions consider multiple factors, including the application and credit bureau information, and that an outcome can be determined only after an application is received and processed. Does spending USD 150,000 guarantee an invitation?
No. The USD 150,000 annual-spend figure is part of American Express Global Network Services’ 2023 issuer guidance. It is not an officially stated universal minimum for every applicant, nor does it guarantee an invitation. The other figure concerns a portfolio supporting a credit line, not simply a stated income or a promise of approval. The manual also allows for local equivalents, so its US-dollar amounts should not be treated as identical thresholds in every market.

Reliable evidence cited here does not establish a universal personal spending threshold, an invitation rate, or the number of Centurion cardholders. Claims about a single required spend amount should therefore be treated cautiously unless the issuer publishes current terms for the relevant market.

How to assess a card described as “black”
Before relying on an eligibility claim or comparing cards, identify the exact product and market. Check these points in the issuer’s current terms:
- Access route: Is the product invitation-only, or can a customer submit an application?
- Issuer and geography: Which bank or card network issues it, and which country’s terms apply?
- Costs: What are the annual fee and any other charges?
- Benefits and restrictions: Which benefits apply to this specific account, and what conditions or limits govern them?
- Evidence for eligibility claims: Is the claim in official issuer policy, or is it unverified reporting?
Benefits are card- and market-specific. For instance, the cited American Express benefits page concerns US Corporate Centurion, so its lounge-access and guest conditions should not be assumed to apply to consumer Centurion accounts or cards issued elsewhere.
