In Routeless’s 2026 snapshot, the median mobile Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) was 7.9 seconds, and 95.4% of completed mobile lab tests took longer than Google’s 2.5-second “good” benchmark. Those results describe the sites in this particular sample under Lighthouse lab testing—not every small business website or every visitor’s real-world experience.
What the snapshot measured
Routeless LLC’s State of Small Business Websites 2026 covered 11,432 unique business domains across 327 U.S. cities. It was collected August 24–25, 2026, and published as revision 2 on August 26, 2026. The domains were deduplicated for the snapshot, but the dataset is not a census of U.S. small businesses.
The mobile performance results use 11,184 successful PageSpeed runs. Homepage feature-detection rates use 11,432 valid homepage observations. Those separate denominators matter: a percentage should be quoted with the sample and measurement it describes.
How to read the mobile performance figures
Among the 11,184 completed mobile Lighthouse lab runs, median LCP was 7.9 seconds, and 95.4% took more than 2.5 seconds to reach LCP. Routeless describes LCP as the point when the largest visible element finishes rendering, and reports Google’s “good” threshold as 2.5 seconds or less.

These are controlled lab measurements, not a direct reading of every visitor’s connection, device, or browsing experience. The 95.4% figure is not the share of all U.S. small businesses that fail Core Web Vitals. It is the share of the sampled sites with completed mobile lab runs that missed this LCP benchmark.
Lab results and field data answer different questions
The report also includes field data from eligible real-user Chrome measurements for a smaller subset of 1,621 domains. Field data reflects eligible real-user observations; Lighthouse lab runs are controlled tests. Because the two datasets cover different sites and measurement conditions, their results should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.
What the WordPress and Wix comparison shows
Routeless detected 5,923 WordPress sites and 654 Wix sites. Their distributions in the sample were:

This is an observational comparison, not a controlled test of the platforms. It does not show that the platform caused the difference, nor does it establish how either group performed on conversions or revenue.
What the homepage signals can—and cannot—tell you
Across 11,432 valid homepage observations, the report’s automated detection found these signals:
- 63.1% had no detectable contact form.
- 29.6% had no detectable analytics tag.
- 8.4% had detectable online booking.
“Not detected” does not prove a feature is absent: a form or analytics implementation may be hidden, loaded dynamically, or unfamiliar to the detector. These homepage signals also do not establish whether a business has the feature elsewhere on its site.

The snapshot is useful as a benchmark for asking, “Where does your website sit in the distribution?” It suggests that slow mobile lab LCP was common among the sampled sites, but it cannot diagnose an individual site or identify which change would improve it. The report does not measure revenue, conversions, customer satisfaction, or the effect of any optimization intervention.
