Western Digital is the HDD-focused company; SanDisk is the independent flash and NAND company. That makes WD the more direct way to invest in high-capacity hard-drive storage, while SanDisk offers exposure to flash storage used in data-center and other markets. Neither is clearly the better stock based on FY2026 growth alone: Sandisk grew faster, but much of its latest quarterly increase came from higher pricing, and the available figures do not establish either company’s current valuation or normalized earnings.
Western Digital and SanDisk are now separate companies
Western Digital completed the separation of its Flash business on February 21, 2025. Sandisk began trading independently on Nasdaq under ticker SNDK on February 24, 2025; WD had disposed of its Sandisk stake by July 3, 2026. This is a comparison of two independent storage companies, not of a parent and subsidiary or two brands under one operating company.
Western Digital: hard drives
WD’s FY2026 Form 10-K describes an HDD-based business serving Cloud, Client, and Consumer markets. Cloud is its largest and fastest-growing end market. WD says its hard drives serve cloud data centers, enterprise systems, edge computing, smart video, client devices, and consumer uses.

SanDisk is the flash/NAND business spun out of the former combined company. In its FY2026 results, it reported revenue across Datacenter, Edge, and Consumer markets. Its annual filing says AI infrastructure growth is driving demand for high-performance storage and NAND products.

What the companies reported in FY2026
The figures below are company-reported results, not independent forecasts. Both fiscal years ended July 3, 2026, and both companies released FY2026 results on August 5, 2026.
| Measure | Western Digital | SanDisk |
|---|---|---|
| FY2026 revenue | $12.919 billion, up 36% year over year (WD FY2026 results) | $20.248 billion, up 175% year over year (Sandisk FY2026 results) |
| FY2026 GAAP operating income | $4.453 billion (WD FY2026 results) | $12.389 billion (Sandisk FY2026 results) |
| FY2026 non-GAAP operating income | Not stated in the figures cited here (WD FY2026 results) | $12.700 billion (Sandisk FY2026 results) |
| FY2026 Q4 revenue | $3.747 billion, up 44% year over year (WD FY2026 results) | $8.965 billion, up 51% sequentially (Sandisk FY2026 results) |
| FY2026 Q4 GAAP gross margin | 54.1% (WD FY2026 results) | Not stated in the figures cited here (Sandisk FY2026 results) |
The figures are not a like-for-like test of investment value: the companies sell different storage technologies into different mixes of markets. SanDisk’s FY2026 GAAP and non-GAAP operating-income figures also differ, so compare each company’s accounting definitions and non-GAAP reconciliations before drawing conclusions about profitability.

How the AI storage opportunity differs
WD’s case depends on HDD demand and execution
WD’s FY2026 Form 10-K says, “The increasing long-term demand for data storage in the cloud is benefiting our HDD business. The adoption of AI and workloads driven by hybrid data are propelling growth in data storage as well.” This is WD’s account of its market, not independent proof that AI spending will translate directly into HDD sales. The company also says higher-capacity drives are more complex to manufacture and have longer production lead times, while customers are partnering earlier and extending commercial arrangements.
WD CEO Irving Tan said in the August 5, 2026 FY2026 results release, “As global data creation continues to accelerate, we enter fiscal year 2027 with continued confidence in the durability of demand and with increasing visibility into our business.” That is management’s outlook, not a guarantee of future demand or results.

SanDisk’s case depends on NAND demand, pricing, and product ramps
SanDisk’s FY2026 filing says rapid AI-infrastructure growth drove demand for high-performance storage and NAND, while favorable pricing trends benefited revenue and cash flow. In its FY2026 Q4 results, SanDisk said revenue rose 51% sequentially to $8.965 billion; management attributed about one-third of that increase to higher volumes and two-thirds to higher pricing. Its Datacenter revenue was $2.977 billion, up 103% sequentially.
Those results show why growth quality matters alongside growth rate. Investors should distinguish sales gains from units, pricing, and product mix, and assess whether favorable pricing can persist. SanDisk Chairman and CEO David Goeckeler said in the August 5, 2026 results release, “We closed fiscal 2026 with a leading technology portfolio, established datacenter as a key growth pillar, and deepened our customer partnerships.” That is the CEO’s characterization of the year.

HDD and NAND are different exposures, not interchangeable bets
WD’s exposure is to high-capacity hard drives; SanDisk’s is to flash/NAND. Both may serve a growing storage system, but they are not direct substitutes in every workload. The relevant question is not simply which technology is “for AI,” but which storage products customers need, at what performance and capacity, and whether each company can deliver them profitably.
- End-market mix: WD identifies Cloud as its largest and fastest-growing market. SanDisk reported strength in Datacenter and Edge in Q4 FY2026, while its Consumer revenue declined sequentially.
- Capacity and delivery: WD describes complexity and longer lead times for higher-capacity drives. SanDisk identifies product ramps, supply-chain execution, and technology transitions as risks.
- Customer arrangements: SanDisk says its New Business Model agreements with Datacenter and Edge customers generally set volumes for delivery and purchase, mostly over multi-year periods, with fixed and variable pricing components. These arrangements may improve visibility but do not remove demand, market, or execution risk.
What to check before comparing the stocks
- Separate reported growth from a forecast. WD’s FY2026 revenue grew 36% year over year; Sandisk’s grew 175%. SanDisk’s Q4 sequential growth was supported mainly by higher pricing, so neither growth rate should be treated as a durable baseline.
- Compare earnings on consistent terms. Review GAAP results, non-GAAP reconciliations, unusual items, and cash generation rather than comparing headline revenue growth alone.
- Check balance sheets and capital allocation. Compare debt, share count, and capital returns. WD paid $0.50 per share in FY2026 and declared a $0.15 dividend after year-end. SanDisk said it did not then intend to pay cash dividends and announced an additional share-repurchase authorization in August 2026. These policies can change.
- Test operational assumptions. Consider whether WD can manufacture and deliver increasingly complex, high-capacity drives, and whether SanDisk can manage product ramps, supply-chain dependencies, and technology transitions.
- Value each business against normalized results. The reported figures here do not include current share prices, market capitalizations, forward multiples, or mid-cycle earnings estimates. A stock’s attractiveness depends on the price paid and the assumptions already reflected in that price, not on reported growth alone.
Risks that could disrupt either investment case
Both companies warn that demand can vary, competitive pricing can pressure products, manufacturing or supply-chain interruptions can delay delivery, and trade policy can raise costs or change demand. WD also identifies supplier and customer relationships, debt, and execution on new technologies as risks. SanDisk names partner dependence, customer concentration or relationship changes, product defects, product ramps, tariffs, and forecasting cyclical demand among its risks. Its long-term customer agreements do not eliminate market, demand, or operational-execution risk.

- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
The sharp FY2026 results make cycle risk especially important. SanDisk’s 175% year-over-year revenue growth came alongside favorable pricing, and its Q4 increase was largely price-driven. Extrapolating that pace indefinitely is not supported by the reported results.
Which is the better way to play AI storage?
WD is the more direct choice for an investor seeking HDD exposure; SanDisk is the choice for flash/NAND exposure. The evidence here does not establish which stock is cheaper or more likely to outperform. That judgment requires current market prices, normalized earnings and cash-flow assumptions, balance-sheet analysis, customer mix, and a view of how storage pricing and demand may change through the cycle.
