The answer to “Western Digital Updates on Company Split: CEOs for Two Companies Announced” is David Goeckeler for the Flash business and Irving Tan for the HDD business. The Flash business became Sandisk Corporation when the separation completed on February 21, 2025, while Western Digital continued as the standalone HDD company led by Tan.

Western Digital made those leadership announcements on March 5, 2024, when the separation was still being prepared. The appointments were initially CEO-designate roles that became relevant to the completed corporate structure only after the spin-off closed.

Key takeaways

  • David Goeckeler was named CEO-designate of the Flash business, which later became Sandisk Corporation.
  • Irving Tan was named CEO-designate of the continuing HDD business and became CEO of standalone Western Digital after the separation.
  • Western Digital completed the separation on February 21, 2025, and publicly announced completion on February 24, 2025.
  • Western Digital now focuses on hard disk drives, while Sandisk operates the separated Flash business, including SSDs and memory cards.
  • HDD support remains with Western Digital; support for flash products, SSDs, and memory cards is directed to Sandisk.

Who became CEO of each company?

David Goeckeler became the leader of the separated Flash business, which became Sandisk Corporation, while Irving Tan became CEO of the continuing Western Digital company focused on HDDs. In the original March 5, 2024 separation announcement, both appointments were described as CEO-designate roles that would take effect when the planned separation was completed.

What was the Western Digital company split?

The Western Digital company split separated the company’s HDD and Flash businesses into two independent publicly traded companies. Western Digital had announced the plan on October 30, 2023, then provided a progress update on March 5, 2024 covering legal-entity creation, contract transfers, financial-model preparation, regulatory filings, and organizational design.

Western Digital said the separation would give the HDD and Flash businesses distinct strategic focus, product and technology priorities, growth opportunities, operating structures, and capital structures. Those statements describe the company’s objectives; the announcements do not by themselves prove that the split improved performance, product quality, customer support, or shareholder returns.

When did Western Digital complete the split?

Western Digital completed the Flash-business spin-off on February 21, 2025. Western Digital publicly announced the successful completion on February 24, 2025, so a current article should describe the separation as completed rather than pending. The completion announcement from Western Digital identified Irving Tan as CEO of the continuing Western Digital company.

Date Event Why it matters
October 30, 2023 Western Digital announced plans to separate its HDD and Flash businesses. The proposed corporate separation was first announced.
March 5, 2024 Western Digital announced transaction progress and named Goeckeler and Tan as CEO-designates. The leadership appointments were announced before the transaction closed.
February 12, 2025 Western Digital held an Investor Day for the future standalone HDD business. The company presented its post-separation HDD strategy and identified Tan as CEO-designate.
February 21, 2025 The Flash-business spin-off into Sandisk Corporation was completed. The two businesses became independent companies.
February 24, 2025 Western Digital publicly announced completion. Western Digital confirmed the continuing company’s standalone status and Tan’s CEO role.
February 19, 2026 Western Digital announced that its professional content-creator storage portfolio would be consolidated under the G-DRIVE brand. The announcement reaffirmed Western Digital’s standalone HDD and storage-portfolio positioning.

What did Western Digital become after the separation?

Western Digital continued as the standalone HDD company, led by Irving Tan. Its post-separation strategy emphasizes HDD technology and relationships with hyperscalers, cloud-service providers, and original-equipment manufacturers, according to Western Digital’s February 2025 Investor Day materials.

Western Digital’s HDD portfolio includes WD Gold for enterprise storage, WD Purple for smart video, WD Red for NAS systems, WD Blue for PC productivity, and WD_BLACK for gaming. Western Digital also continues to sell professional external storage under the G-DRIVE identity. Portfolio branding and product availability can vary by market and model, so the company split should not be treated as a blanket statement about every legacy-branded product.

What did the Flash business become?

The separated Flash business became Sandisk Corporation, an independent public company. The transaction disclosure states that Sandisk began trading independently on Nasdaq under the symbol SNDK after the distribution. The Western Digital SEC filing describing the separation also explains that Sandisk shares were distributed to Western Digital shareholders on a pro rata basis, with each WDC shareholder receiving one-third of a Sandisk share for every WDC share held as of the February 12, 2025 record date.

The corporate distinction is especially relevant for Flash products. Sandisk is the separate company associated with the Flash business, including SSDs and memory cards, while Western Digital remains the company associated with HDD products.

Which company should customers contact for support?

Customers should choose support based on the product category: use Western Digital support for HDD products, and use Sandisk support for Flash products, SSDs, and memory cards. Western Digital’s current support guidance directs customers to the appropriate company after the separation.

Product type Support company Practical check
Internal or external HDD Western Digital Check the model number and HDD product family on WD’s support site.
SSD Sandisk Use Sandisk support even if the product carries a familiar legacy storage label.
Memory card Sandisk Use Sandisk support for product help, warranty questions, and troubleshooting.
Flash-based storage Sandisk Confirm the exact product category before opening a support case.

Customers should not assume that every product with a historical Western Digital or SanDisk label changed ownership or support treatment in exactly the same way. The official guidance is category-based, so checking the exact model and product type is safer than relying only on the brand printed on the device or packaging.

Does the split mean customers need to replace their drives?

No. The corporate separation does not, by itself, require customers to replace working HDDs, SSDs, memory cards, or external drives. The practical change is mainly corporate ownership and support routing; customers should continue using the product according to its documentation and contact the company assigned to its category if help is needed.

The split also does not make a backup drive necessary. If a customer is planning a NAS upgrade or local backup independently of the corporate transaction, a product such as a WD Red Plus 4TB NAS hard drive is an example of Western Digital’s NAS-oriented HDD category. That is an adjacent storage example, not a recommendation required by the separation and not a product review.

What is the simplest way to remember the two companies?

Use the storage technology as the first guide: Western Digital is the standalone HDD company, and Sandisk is the independent Flash company. For support, HDD questions go to Western Digital, while SSD, memory-card, and other Flash-product questions go to Sandisk. When the brand or product category is unclear, use the model number to verify the correct support destination.
