Well Dweller is a strong pick for metroidvania fans on Switch 2, with two qualifications. First, Nintendo lists it as a digital Nintendo Switch game that Switch 2 supports and enhances, not as a separate Switch 2 edition. Second, reviewers agree on its atmosphere and level design but disagree on how well the opening and combat hold up. Its most consistent friction points are backtracking, one-way doors and a few demanding stealth and chase sequences.
What Well Dweller is
Well Dweller is a dark fairy-tale metroidvania by Kyle Thompson, released on September 22, 2026. You play Glimmer, a small bird whose matchstick works as both a light source and a weapon, as it searches for the family taken by the queen. The game combines exploration, puzzles, boss fights and ability upgrades across a gloomy storybook world.
Nintendo says trinkets can be mixed and matched to customize how you play. The independent game description adds that the map is connected and opens up as your movement skills improve, which is the core of the metroidvania loop: you return to earlier areas once new abilities let you reach them.
Is there a separate Switch 2 version?
No. Nintendo’s US product page lists Well Dweller as a Nintendo Switch digital title with a September 22, 2026 release date. It does not identify a distinct Switch 2 Edition SKU. Instead, the page marks Switch 2 compatibility as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch,” and separately lists four Switch 2 enhancements. The practical takeaway is that Switch 2 is an upgrade path, not a requirement. Anyone with a Nintendo Switch can play the game, and the listing does not imply that the base experience is missing anything. The Switch 2 download is larger, so check storage before you buy.
What the Switch 2 enhancements look like in play
Nintendo’s enhancement claims come from its store listing, and they are not independently measured. Reviewer observations are more useful for setting expectations, but they are subjective and do not share a test method.

- Frame rate: The same reviewer did not notice a frame-rate difference. A Nintendo Everything reviewer, who played on Switch 2 through backwards compatibility, saw no notable frame-rate or visual-quality dips at default settings, in both docked and handheld play. Neither review reports a measured frame rate, so no specific figure should be expected.
- Load times: In eShopperReviews’ own test, loading to the title screen took 35 seconds on Switch and 34 seconds on Switch 2. Loading a save was described as nearly instantaneous. These are single-reviewer timings, not controlled benchmarks.
- Boss Rush: Nintendo lists Boss Rush Mode as a Switch 2 enhancement. eShopperReviews understood it to unlock after beating the main game, so it is a postgame mode rather than something available from the start.
What reviewers agree on, and where they differ
Nintendo World Report gave the game 9/10 in a review by Willem Hilhorst published October 3, 2026. Nintendo Everything and eShopperReviews also reviewed it. The three outlets agree on the game’s strengths, but they weigh its rough edges differently.

This is the point of widest agreement. Nintendo World Report calls the presentation striking from the first moments and praises the fairy-tale aesthetic, the distinct regions and the use of color. Nintendo Everything describes the areas as bleak but detailed and uncluttered. The unsettling storybook look is the main reason to try the game.

Exploration and traversal
Nintendo World Report praises the level design and says exploration settles into a natural flow, even though the map’s initial scale can feel overwhelming. Nintendo Everything describes an enormous map with backtracking and ability-gated routes. It also notes that new upgrades build on the traversal skills you already have, rather than replacing them with a standard double jump.
Combat and bosses
Here the reviews diverge. Nintendo Everything finds ordinary combat comparatively lackluster, though its enemy patterns are readable, and says the bosses benefit from distinctive presentation and story context. eShopperReviews praises solid combat and clever boss fights. If combat is what you care about most, weigh these two assessments before buying.

Difficulty and pacing
Nintendo World Report says the opening felt slow and unwieldy before the game’s systems came together, so patience is required early on. Nintendo Everything finds most of the game well balanced, but singles out one stealth section and one chase sequence that demand speed and precision. eShopperReviews characterizes the game as somewhat challenging overall.

Backtracking is the most consistent caveat across the reviews. Nintendo Everything reports that you can fast travel between tents and use map markers to find missed collectibles, which eases the burden of revisiting areas. eShopperReviews criticizes how often one-way doors appear, which means you cannot simply return the way you came.

The following details come from Nintendo Everything’s review and should be treated as reviewer findings rather than an exhaustive official feature list.
- Three difficulty settings, plus assist options that can adjust combat.
- Fully customizable controls.
- A hold-to-heal option that skips the healing minigame.
- Up to 30 additional seconds for time trials.
- Tents serve as save and upgrade points and can be fast-traveled to from the map.
Nintendo’s US listing carries Blood and Violence content descriptors from the ESRB. The game’s listed languages are Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and American English.
Who should buy it
- Buy it if you enjoy metroidvanias and want an unusual art style. Reviewers consistently rate the atmosphere and level design highly.
- Expect to be patient with the opening and with backtracking. Fast travel and map markers help, but they do not remove the need to revisit areas.
- Be cautious if you dislike unforgiving stealth or chase sequences, or if one-way doors frustrate you. These are the moments reviewers singled out as demanding.
- Consider the Switch 2 version if you already own a Switch 2 and want the listed resolution, rendering and Boss Rush enhancements. If you only have a Nintendo Switch, the base game is still the same listing and the same content.
Without a head-to-head comparison among the reviews, it is not possible to call Well Dweller objectively better or worse than other metroidvanias. Its traversal, map scale, combat and boss design are the axes on which to judge it against the games you already know.
