Weight loss in midlife does not require starving yourself or endlessly increasing cardio. If weight loss is appropriate for you, a balanced eating pattern and a manageable calorie deficit can help; regular movement should also include strength or weight-bearing activity, not just cardio. The headline’s word “starving” is a warning about severe restriction, not a clinical diagnosis—and the originating coach and exact advice behind that headline could not be verified.
Why severe restriction is not a good default
Weight loss generally involves taking in fewer calories than the body uses, but that does not make a severe or nutritionally inadequate diet a sensible starting point. The NHS describes a moderate reduction alongside balanced eating, and notes that calorie counting is not the only way to approach weight loss. NHS: Better Health—Lose weight
There is no universal calorie target that suits every woman in her 40s or 50s. A useful eating plan needs to fit a person’s health, circumstances and preferences while remaining nutritionally adequate. NICE recommends tailoring dietary interventions to factors including food preferences, personal circumstances, comorbidities and dietary restrictions. NICE says diets providing fewer than 800 kcal per day should be considered only within a multicomponent specialist service, for people with obesity who have a clinically assessed need for rapid weight loss. They are not intended as a long-term strategy and require clinical support. They are not a do-it-yourself shortcut for routine weight loss. Cardio can help, but it is not the whole plan
Cardio is not inherently harmful, and there is no evidence here for a universal limit on how much to do. The problem is treating ever more cardio as the only answer while neglecting strength and muscle. NICE advises explaining to people experiencing menopause the importance of maintaining muscle mass and strength through physical activity. NICE: Menopause—identification and management
The NHS also recommends regular exercise during menopause, with an emphasis on weight-bearing exercise to build strength and help protect against weakening bones. Resistance exercises, including using weights, are examples—not a requirement to buy equipment. NHS: Menopause

- Increase activity gradually rather than relying on punishing workouts or trying to compensate for food with exercise.
There is no single exercise style that guarantees weight loss. A broader approach also considers healthy eating patterns, regular activity, enough sleep and stress management. The CDC says gradual, steady weight loss is more likely to be maintained than faster loss. CDC: Losing Weight
Make the eating plan fit the person
Instead of following a rigid plan simply because it worked for someone else, start with an eating pattern that can be maintained and adapted to your needs. NICE’s advice to tailor dietary interventions means the approach should account for food preferences, daily circumstances, medical conditions and dietary restrictions—not just a calorie number.
