If a firewall asks whether WebView2 may access the web, first identify the app that is using it. WebView2 is a shared Microsoft runtime for displaying web content inside Windows apps—not necessarily a request from the standalone Edge browser. Allow it only when the host app is trusted, needs online features, and the requested network profile is appropriate. If the app or request is unfamiliar, deny access while you investigate.

Why WebView2 wants network access

WebView2 lets Windows applications display web-based content within their own windows. Microsoft lists apps and services such as Widgets, Teams, Office, Outlook, and Weather among its users. Because it is shared, a firewall entry mentioning WebView2 does not, by itself, identify which app initiated the connection or prove that Edge itself is responsible. Microsoft’s WebView2 overview explains the runtime’s role.

Look at the exact name and publisher shown in the alert, and note which app you had just opened. The host app is the key to deciding whether its web access is expected. The prompt wording and requested destination are not known from the name “WebView2” alone.

Should you allow or deny access?

What you know Safer next step What to expect
The host app is familiar and trusted, and you use its online features. Allow only the network profile or profiles the app needs. Some online features may depend on access. Microsoft guidance says required app endpoints may include sign-in and content-delivery services. Microsoft’s security guidance advises considering both the runtime and host executable.
The app or publisher is unfamiliar, or the timing does not make sense. Deny for now and investigate the host app and the alert in your firewall or security product. A WebView2 label alone is not enough to establish what app or destination is involved.
You do not use the app’s online features. Deny access if your firewall offers that choice, then check whether the app still works as you need it. Features that rely on online content, sign-in, or services may stop working.

When choosing network profiles, do not automatically allow both private and public networks. Select only the profile or profiles appropriate to your use and the app’s needs. The exact choices depend on the alert and security product.

How to stop repeated prompts safely

The precise steps depend on whether the notice comes from Windows Defender Firewall or a third-party security product, as well as your Windows version and the app involved. Use that product’s controls to review or change the rule for the identified app; avoid creating a broad permission for every network or application simply to dismiss the alert. If the alert provides only an allow-or-deny choice, deny it when you cannot verify the app, then consult the firewall’s documentation for managing its rules.

There is no general WebView2 setting established in Microsoft’s reviewed documentation that dismisses every firewall prompt while preserving all online features of every host app. Microsoft’s WebView2 policy reference documents specific administrative controls, not a universal consumer firewall-prompt switch. Review the WebView2 enterprise policy documentation before relying on a policy change; Edge-browser policies generally do not control WebView2, and unsupported policy settings can disrupt features. Microsoft’s Edge policy reference describes browser policies, whose scope should not be assumed to extend to embedded WebView2 apps.

Do not remove or weaken the shared runtime

Uninstalling WebView2, deleting its files, or applying broad security exclusions is not a safe general fix. Other apps may depend on the runtime, and interference can lead to blank views, initialization failures, or crashes. Microsoft advises preserving the runtime’s default folder permissions: “Don’t modify the default Access Control Lists (ACLs) that Windows sets on the WebView2 Runtime folders.” Microsoft’s guidance on preventing security tools from blocking WebView2 apps also recommends checking the host executable and allowing only the endpoints an app actually requires, rather than making global exclusions.

Firewall access is not the same as diagnostic-data settings

Windows diagnostic-data controls address diagnostic data, not whether a host app can reach the internet. Microsoft documents WebView2 optional diagnostic data as following the Windows diagnostic-data setting on Windows 10 and Windows 11; changing that setting is not a substitute for reviewing a firewall rule. See Microsoft’s WebView2 documentation for the distinction.

What to check if the app stops working

  • Identify the app that hosts WebView2 and the feature that fails, such as sign-in or online content.
  • Review the firewall rule for that app and the WebView2 runtime, using the security product that displayed the prompt.
  • If access is required, allow only the necessary app and network profile. In managed environments, have an administrator validate the app’s required endpoints rather than applying a global security exclusion.
  • Do not modify, quarantine, or replace OS-managed WebView2 runtime files. Microsoft warns that Windows components may load runtime files from System32.

If the prompt keeps returning, record its exact text, publisher, executable or app name, firewall product, Windows version, and network profile. Those details are needed for reliable click-by-click instructions; the label “WebView2” alone does not establish which connection or host app is involved.
