WebSockets let a browser and server send messages to each other independently over one persistent connection. Unlike polling, which repeatedly asks whether anything has changed, a WebSocket connection can carry a server update as soon as it is ready—and client messages can travel back over that same connection.
Why real-time applications use WebSockets
With polling, a client sends repeated requests to check for updates. That can work when changes are infrequent, but it adds repeated request traffic and means the client learns about a change only when it checks again. Chat, multiplayer games, live tickers, and collaborative interfaces often need a more direct exchange: either side may have something to send at any time.
WebSockets provide that two-way channel. RFC 6455 describes the protocol as enabling communication between a client and a remote host that has opted in to it. The protocol runs over TCP; it is not a stream of HTTP messages. HTTP is involved in the familiar opening handshake, after which WebSocket framing carries the data.
How a WebSocket connection is established
1. The browser requests an upgrade
Application code creates a browser WebSocket using a ws:// or wss:// URL. A secure page should use wss://. The browser handles the connection setup and opening handshake for the application.

In the classic HTTP/1.1 handshake, the browser sends a GET request with headers including Upgrade: websocket, Connection: Upgrade, Sec-WebSocket-Key, and Sec-WebSocket-Version: 13. It may also offer subprotocols or extensions. Because HTTP/1.1’s Upgrade header is hop-by-hop, the Connection header names it as well. See RFC 6455 and MDN’s protocol-upgrade guide.
Current browser behavior also integrates WebSocket creation with Fetch-related rules, including cookies, HSTS, credentials, and redirects. That browser integration does not replace the protocol’s handshake definition; the WHATWG WebSockets Standard describes the browser-facing behavior.
2. The server accepts or declines
The server may reject the request with an HTTP error or another response. If it accepts the classic HTTP/1.1 upgrade, it replies with 101 Switching Protocols and a Sec-WebSocket-Accept value calculated from the client’s key and a fixed GUID as RFC 6455 specifies. This confirms that the response follows the WebSocket handshake; it is not a password, encryption, or user-authentication mechanism.

A proxy or load balancer may forward the upgrade to a WebSocket server. The path must support the upgrade, and connection routing and timeouts need to account for connections that remain open rather than ending after one request.

3. Both endpoints exchange frames
Once the handshake succeeds, the connection switches to WebSocket protocol framing. Either endpoint can send without waiting for the other to poll or request a response. Frames can carry UTF-8 text, binary data, or control information such as ping, pong, and close operations. Control frames serve protocol functions, not application messaging.
A WebSocket message may consist of multiple frames, and a frame or message does not necessarily correspond to a single TCP packet or network boundary. The application should work with message events and its own message format, not assume that a network read equals one complete application message. RFC 6455 defines framing and control behavior in its protocol specification.

What WebSockets do—and do not—provide
WebSocket provides a framed transport channel and connection behavior. It does not define what a message means to your application. For example, an app still needs to design its event names and payload schemas, decide which users may join a room, authorize sensitive actions, and determine whether events are saved or can be replayed after a disconnect.
If both ends need to agree on a higher-level vocabulary, document it or negotiate a WebSocket subprotocol. The protocol itself does not provide durable delivery, replay, or recovery of application state. Those require additional design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat browser application code must handle
The conventional browser WebSocket API exposes connection state and open, message, error, and close events. Those events let an application react to connection changes, but they do not decide what recovery means for the product.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Disconnection and reconnects: Decide whether and when to reconnect, how to authenticate again, and whether the client must fetch a fresh snapshot or resume from a known point.
- Duplicate side effects: If a client retries a message after an uncertain disconnect, design operations so that the retry cannot accidentally apply an action twice.
- Dead-peer detection: Servers commonly use ping/pong behavior and connection tracking to find or manage inactive peers. Choose timing appropriate to the deployment; there is no universal heartbeat interval.
- Backpressure: The standard browser WebSocket API does not provide backpressure. If messages arrive faster than code can process them, buffering can consume memory or CPU. MDN documents the browser WebSockets API and compares alternatives.
- Server lifecycle: Track connection resources and close them when they are no longer needed. MDN’s server guide covers close behavior, ping/pong, reverse proxies, and client tracking.
Security and reliability considerations
Protect browser sessions and sensitive actions
Check the browser-supplied Origin against an explicit allowlist. This helps defend against Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking when browsers send credentials automatically. Origin checking is not authentication: non-browser clients can forge the header, so the server must authenticate sessions and authorize each sensitive operation independently.
Use wss:// to encrypt traffic in transit. The Sec-WebSocket-Key and Sec-WebSocket-Accept exchange establishes protocol agreement, not encryption or user identity. Validate message structure and content, and apply size, rate, and connection limits appropriate to the application. RFC 6455’s security considerations and MDN’s server guidance are useful implementation references.
Plan for long-lived connections
Configure proxies, load balancers, and server timeouts to allow the intended connection lifetime. Define how the server closes a connection and how clients recover, resynchronize state, or resume work afterward. A live socket alone does not guarantee that every business event has been durably delivered or can be recovered after a network failure.

When WebSockets are a good fit—and what to compare
WebSockets are a strong option when communication needs to flow in both directions over a persistent connection and broad browser support matters. They are not automatically the best choice for every live-update feature. Compare the actual direction of traffic, flow-control needs, delivery semantics, browser support, and implementation complexity.
| Option | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WebSocket | Both client and server need to send over a persistent browser connection. | The conventional browser API is stable and broadly supported, but lacks backpressure. |
| WebSocketStream | Stream-style handling and backpressure are important. | MDN describes it as non-standard with limited rendering-engine support; check current compatibility before choosing it. |
| WebTransport | The design needs capabilities such as unidirectional streams, out-of-order delivery, or unreliable datagrams. | It is more complex and has narrower cross-browser support than WebSocket; verify current status for target browsers. |
These support and standardization details can change. Check the current MDN WebSockets API documentation and browser compatibility information before committing to an alternative.
