One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere is no universal website that can reliably certify any image as AI-generated or human-made. Start by checking for a provenance signal from the likely creator: use Gemini or Google’s SynthID Detector for possible Google AI images, OpenAI Verify for supported OpenAI signals, or Hive’s API if you need a model-based classification. A result only describes what that tool found; a missing signal does not prove human authorship.
Choose a checker based on the image’s likely source
Image checkers use different methods. A provenance checker looks for a watermark or credential associated with a particular provider. A classifier estimates whether an image resembles AI-generated content. These are not interchangeable: a provider-specific check may miss another provider’s image, while a classifier’s estimate is not proof of who made the image.
| Tool | What it checks | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google SynthID Detector | SynthID watermarks in supported Google AI content; the portal may highlight likely watermarked regions. | Checking a possible Google AI image when portal access is available. | It checks for SynthID, not every AI system. Google’s May 20, 2025 launch announcement described access as rolling out to early testers through a waitlist; verify current access at the SynthID Detector announcement. |
| Google Gemini image verification | SynthID in images when asked whether Google AI created or edited them. | A straightforward app-based check for possible Google AI provenance. | Google describes this as a SynthID check, not a universal detector. See Google’s Gemini image verification announcement. |
| OpenAI Verify | Supported C2PA credentials and SynthID associated with OpenAI tools. | Checking a possible ChatGPT, Codex, or OpenAI API image. | It is not designed to detect other AI services, and missing signals are inconclusive. See OpenAI Verify. |
| Hive image detection API | Model-based AI-generation and source classifications, and it may also return C2PA metadata. | Developer or organizational workflows that need classification output or API integration. | A confidence score or metadata field is not conclusive authorship proof. Hive recommends assessing the whole response because metadata can be stripped or falsified. See its image and video detection API reference. |
For a one-off image, start with the provider most likely to have generated it. If you do not know the source, a classifier such as Hive may offer a broader estimate, but it still cannot settle the question by itself.
How to check an image with Google tools
Ask Gemini
- Open the Gemini app or Gemini website available to you and upload the image.
- Ask a direct question, such as “Was this created with Google AI?” or “Is this AI-generated?” Google gives these as example prompts in its image verification announcement.
- Read the answer as a check for Google’s supported SynthID signal, not as a verdict on all possible AI origins.
Gemini’s check is useful when Google AI is a plausible source. A negative answer cannot rule out content made by another provider, nor does it establish that a person made the image.

Try the SynthID Detector portal
If you have access, upload the image to Google’s SynthID Detector portal and review whether it identifies a likely watermarked region. The portal is specifically for SynthID signals. Google’s May 2025 launch post described an early-tester rollout with a waitlist, so availability may depend on the current access program; check the announcement for the latest information rather than assuming the portal is open to everyone.
How to check an image with OpenAI Verify
- Open OpenAI Verify and upload one image.
- For best image results, use the original file where possible. OpenAI advises avoiding crops and file-format conversions before checking.
- Interpret the result as whether supported OpenAI-associated signals were found in that upload. “Not detected” means the tool did not find supported signals; it does not mean the image is human-made.
OpenAI notes that a signal may be absent if metadata was stripped or tampered with, a watermark was degraded, or the image came from a legacy model or a period before signals were available. Images from other AI companies may also go undetected. More detail is available in OpenAI’s explanation of provenance signals.
When a classifier or API makes sense
For repeated checks or a workflow that needs a machine-readable estimate, Hive’s image detection API offers model classifications for AI generation and source, and may return C2PA metadata. This is different from finding a provider-specific watermark: it is a model’s assessment of the image, not a provenance record that independently establishes authorship.

Review the complete response rather than treating one score or field as a verdict. Hive cautions that metadata can be removed or falsified. The available sources do not establish an independent accuracy rate for these named website options, so do not translate a confidence score into a percentage chance that a particular person or service created the image.
How to interpret a result without overclaiming
A supported signal was found
Say that the tool found a supported Google or OpenAI provenance signal, or that a classifier estimated the image was AI-generated. This is evidence about origin signals or model classification, not a finding that the image is false, untouched, correctly captioned, or owned by a particular person.
No signal was found
Use wording such as “the checker did not find a supported signal.” C2PA credentials can be removed by editing, conversion, or sharing; coverage varies by model and export path. SynthID is embedded in supported media and may survive some transformations, but a missing SynthID result still does not exclude other AI systems. OpenAI’s content provenance documentation explains provenance mechanisms and their limits.

The result conflicts with context
Do not resolve a dispute from a single detector result. Preserve the original file and its available provenance information, compare results only with tools that cover the likely source, and seek independent context such as the original publisher or creator. A detected origin signal does not establish that the image is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or shown in its original context. OpenAI states this limitation explicitly on its Verify page.
Common problems and what to do
- The SynthID portal is unavailable: Google described early-tester access in its May 2025 announcement. Use Gemini’s supported verification feature if available to you, or check again for portal access updates.
- A checker says “not detected”: Treat that as absence of a supported signal, not proof of human creation. If possible, check the unmodified original and try the relevant provider-specific tool.
- The image was cropped, compressed, or converted: These operations can affect provenance information. OpenAI recommends avoiding crops and format conversion for Verify image checks; obtain the original file if possible.
- Different tools disagree: They may be checking different signals or answering different questions. Distinguish a watermark or credential match from a classifier estimate instead of averaging them into a supposed certainty.
- A high classifier score is presented as proof: It is not proof of a named author, source, or intent. Consult the tool’s full response and corroborate outside the classifier.
- You need a statement about truth or ownership: An AI-origin checker does not answer whether depicted events happened, whether edits are material, or who has legal rights. Those require separate evidence.
Keep a record of where an image appeared
If your task includes documenting the webpage where an image was found, save the page URL and relevant context alongside the original image. A screenshot can preserve how the page appeared at capture time, but it does not determine whether the image is AI-generated. ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server, not an image-origin checker. It may be useful for capturing a page as supporting context; it should not be treated as verification of authorship.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available figures do—and do not—show
Google said in its Gemini image verification announcement that more than 20 billion AI-generated pieces of content had been watermarked using SynthID at that time. This is Google’s own deployment figure, not an independent validation study or a detector-accuracy statistic. No independent accuracy rate for the named website options is established by the sources cited here, so a universal percentage would be misleading.
Practical wording for reports and moderation
- When a provider signal matches: “The check found a supported SynthID/C2PA provenance signal associated with the named provider.”
- When a classifier returns a positive estimate: “The classifier estimated that the image was AI-generated.”
- When nothing matches: “The tool did not find a supported signal in this file.”
- Avoid “verified authentic,” “definitely human-made,” or “proven fake” unless separate evidence supports that stronger claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a watermark prove the image is genuine or unedited?
No. It is provenance information, not a guarantee about accuracy, editing history, rights, or presentation context.

Can I check an image without knowing which AI made it?
A classifier can estimate AI generation more broadly, but its output is not a universal provenance check or proof of authorship.
Does a screenshot of the page verify that the image is AI-generated?
No. A screenshot documents page appearance; use a suitable provenance checker or classifier for an image-origin assessment.
