For a social link preview, start with 1200 × 630 pixels (about 1.91:1), save as JPG or PNG, and keep the file below 5 MB. That is a practical cross-network target, not a universal rule. An in-page website thumbnail is different: WordPress themes and site settings can generate thumbnails at their own dimensions.
First decide which “thumbnail” you mean
The word thumbnail describes two different jobs:
- In-page thumbnail: a small image rendered in a blog card, archive, sidebar, related-post block or homepage. Its pixel dimensions are controlled by the CMS, theme and image-size settings.
- Social link-preview image: the image a network fetches when someone shares a page URL. Facebook and LinkedIn apply their own minimums, ratios, file limits and caching rules.
A 300-pixel WordPress card image can be perfectly correct on your site but unsuitable as a Facebook or LinkedIn preview. Conversely, exporting every small card image at 1200 × 630 pixels may waste storage and bandwidth if the theme only displays it at 300 pixels wide.
The practical answer for social previews
Use 1200 × 630 px, approximately 1.91:1, as a shared starting point for Facebook, LinkedIn and other networks. Export a JPG or PNG and keep it under 5 MB. Keep logos, headlines and faces near the center because some placements crop the edges. WordPress.com identifies this size as a general social-preview recommendation.
This target is a convenience, not a promise that every service will display identical pixels. Check the destination network’s current documentation when a campaign depends on exact cropping, file size or high-resolution output.

WordPress in-page thumbnail sizes
WordPress documents these default image-size names and maximum dimensions:

These are WordPress implementation defaults, not a web-wide thumbnail standard. In the dashboard, open Settings → Media to see the site’s configured values. A theme can register additional sizes, select a different size for its featured-image component, or crop to an exact rectangle. Developers can also register custom sizes and use proportional resizing or hard cropping through WordPress functions such as set_post_thumbnail_size().
How to choose an in-page export
- Inspect the widest place the image appears. Exporting close to that rendered width avoids unnecessary downloads while preserving sharpness on high-density screens.
- Check whether the theme crops images to a fixed ratio. A source with the wrong shape may lose the subject’s head, product edges or text.
- Do not overwrite the original merely to satisfy a thumbnail size. WordPress can generate derivatives from a larger source.
- After changing registered sizes, regenerate thumbnails if existing uploads still use old derivatives; the exact regeneration method depends on your WordPress setup.

Facebook may choose among a page’s images. Setting an explicit featured image gives your CMS and sharing metadata a clear candidate, but it does not guarantee that Facebook will select it in every context.
LinkedIn link-preview requirements
LinkedIn’s help guidance specifies a 1200 × 627 px minimum, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio, and allows a maximum file size of 5 MB. The six-pixel height difference from 1200 × 630 is small, so a 1200 × 630 master is usually a practical cross-network asset; use 1200 × 627 when LinkedIn’s exact minimum is a production requirement.
LinkedIn also distinguishes smaller display modes. Its help page says images under 401 px wide display as a thumbnail in the sharing module. Separate WordPress.com guidance says an image under 200 px wide will not display in the larger format. These are different thresholds from different support pages, not interchangeable guarantees. Images with other ratios may appear with subtle white padding on mobile.

One image for several networks
For a single file, use this checklist:
- Canvas: 1200 × 630 px.
- Ratio: about 1.91:1.
- Format: JPG for photographic artwork or PNG when sharp text and transparency matter.
- File size: below 5 MB, even though Facebook allows up to 8 MB.
- Safe area: keep essential content away from all four edges.
- Text: use large, high-contrast lettering that remains legible on a phone.
Keep separate exports when a platform’s exact dimensions, crop or file limit matters more than workflow simplicity.
Open Graph and featured-image setup
Social networks read metadata from the page rather than guessing only from the visible layout. WordPress.com says its system adds og:title, og:description and og:image tags for posts and pages. In a self-hosted WordPress installation, your SEO or social-sharing plugin may provide equivalent controls.

- Set the post’s featured image.
- Set a dedicated social image if your publishing tool offers one; this lets the in-page crop and social crop differ.
- Confirm that the image URL is publicly reachable without a login, hotlink block or temporary URL.
- Check the generated page source or a preview tool for the intended Open Graph image.
- Publish, then validate the actual URL on the destination network.
Why a corrected image may not appear immediately
Facebook and LinkedIn cache fetched previews. Replacing the file at the same URL may therefore leave an older image visible for a while. Facebook’s Sharing Debugger can request a fresh scrape. LinkedIn’s Post Inspector can inspect or refresh the shared URL. If the preview remains wrong, verify the live metadata, image dimensions, redirects, permissions and file size before repeatedly rescraping.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The image is cropped badly
- Confirm the canvas ratio is close to 1.91:1.
- Move important text and faces inward and remove edge-dependent design elements.
- Check whether the destination is using a different image from the page.
LinkedIn shows a small card
- Check the image width against LinkedIn’s 401-pixel thumbnail threshold.
- Verify the file is at least 1200 × 627 px for the large-image requirement.
- Inspect the URL with Post Inspector after correcting metadata.
Facebook selects the wrong image
- Set an explicit featured or social image.
- Ensure
og:imagepoints to the intended, publicly accessible file. - Use Sharing Debugger to request a new scrape after the page is corrected.
The preview is blank or unchanged
- Open the image URL in a private browser window to test public access.
- Check for authentication, robots or firewall rules that block crawlers.
- Confirm the response is a real JPG or PNG, not an HTML error page.
- Allow for cache delay, then inspect again.
WordPress cards look blurry or distorted
- Review Settings → Media and the theme’s registered sizes.
- Check whether hard cropping is enabled and whether the source ratio matches the card.
- Regenerate derivatives after changing size definitions.

Cost, quality and workflow considerations
- Storage: keep a large original and generate web derivatives; do not force every card to download a 1200-pixel image.
- Quality: compress until text and edges remain clean, while staying below the destination’s limit.
- Consistency: use a reusable 1200 × 630 template with a centered safe area.
- Validation: test the final URL, not only a local image file, because metadata and crawler access determine the social preview.
- Change control: record the destination, dimensions, ratio and file limit for campaign assets; platform specifications can change.
