There is no single “website thumbnail” size. Choose the destination and placement first, then select its aspect ratio, resolution, crop-safe area and file limits. A site card, Open Graph link preview, YouTube video thumbnail, Instagram post and Pinterest pin are different assets. For a dependable starting point, use the placement table below, then confirm the platform’s current help page before exporting.
Quick reference: common thumbnail dimensions
The values below are practical starting points, not universal guarantees. The cross-platform figures come from 2026 secondary guides, and those guides disagree on some placements. YouTube’s figures are from current YouTube Help and should take precedence for YouTube uploads.
| Platform and placement | Starting dimensions | Aspect ratio | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube video thumbnail | 3840 × 2160 px recommended by current YouTube Help; 1280 × 720 px appears in older working guides | 16:9 | Use the current YouTube recommendation for new work; upload limits vary by device. |
| YouTube Shorts thumbnail | 2160 × 3840 px | 9:16 | Keep text inside the central safe area because interface controls can cover edges. |
| YouTube podcast playlist | Square image | 1:1 | Follow the playlist-specific upload guidance rather than a video-thumbnail template. |
| Instagram feed, square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Do not reuse this canvas for portrait posts, Stories or Reels. |
| Instagram portrait feed | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Preview the crop in the feed before publishing. |
| Instagram Stories/Reels and TikTok vertical video | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Reserve space for captions, controls and account information. |
| Facebook link preview | About 1200 × 630 px | About 1.91:1 | This is a link card reference, not a feed-photo or cover-image specification. |
| X post image | About 1200 × 675 px | 16:9 | Behavior can differ between a post image and a link card. |
| LinkedIn post image | About 1200 × 627 px | About 1.91:1 | Do not confuse a post image with a page banner. |
| Pinterest standard pin | About 1000 × 1500 px | 2:3 | The tall pin canvas is not interchangeable with a social link preview. |
The Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Pinterest values are commonly cited working references, not confirmed official 2026 requirements in the available platform documentation. Treat “about” values as export targets and verify the exact placement and current limits before a production campaign.
Why aspect ratio matters more than a single pixel number
Match the canvas to the placement
A 16:9 image can be letterboxed, cropped or reframed when placed in a 4:5 feed slot. Starting with the target ratio lets you compose the subject and headline intentionally instead of allowing an automatic crop to remove them.

Separate minimums from recommendations
A minimum only describes the smallest image a service may accept or process. It does not promise sharp results on high-density displays. Google’s video-search guidance, for example, states a minimum thumbnail size of 60 × 30 px, while also saying larger images are preferred. That is eligibility guidance for video features, not a recommended size for every social preview.
Account for overlays and safe areas
Play buttons, duration badges, profile names, captions and navigation controls can cover corners or the lower edge. Keep faces, logos and essential words away from those regions. YouTube also documents an exception for vertical videos: when a 16:9 thumbnail is supplied, an automatically generated 4:5 version can appear on Home, Explore and subscription pages. Design the important content so that a centered 4:5 crop still communicates the subject.
Website cards and Open Graph previews
A “website thumbnail” usually means the image shown when a page is shared or listed in a card grid. The image is selected by your site’s metadata and then fetched by the crawler or platform; it is not the same workflow as uploading a YouTube thumbnail.
Choose a default card ratio
For a general website, a landscape image near 1.91:1 is a practical starting canvas because it suits many link-preview layouts. The often-cited 1200 × 630 px size is a secondary-reference convention, not a universal current requirement. If your own card component uses a different ratio, export to that component’s ratio first and crop the social version separately.
Make the image fetchable
- Use a stable, publicly reachable image URL.
- Keep the URL consistent across the metadata mechanisms you implement.
- Serve a supported image format and an appropriate file size for the platform.
- Test the page at the actual URL after publishing; cached previews can lag behind a metadata change.
For Google video features specifically, Google says the thumbnail must be available to both Googlebot and Googlebot Images. Google lists HTML poster images, video sitemaps, structured data and Open Graph as possible discovery sources. Those instructions concern video-search eligibility, not a blanket rule for every Open Graph card.

YouTube thumbnail sizes and special cases
Standard videos
Current YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160 px at 16:9 for custom video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 px. Older guides commonly repeat 1280 × 720 px; that value is not the current recommendation and should not be presented without the qualification.
Shorts
YouTube separately recommends 2160 × 3840 px at 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails. Check the mobile preview: vertical surfaces add controls and labels that can obscure edge content.
Podcast playlists
YouTube describes a square image for podcast playlists. Use a dedicated square cover rather than stretching a video frame into that placement.

Custom design and performance
YouTube Help says, “Fun fact: 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails.” That is YouTube’s statement; the cited passage does not provide study methodology, so treat it as platform guidance rather than an independently validated statistic. Export a crisp source, then compress a delivery copy so upload and loading limits are met.
How to create one source image for several placements
- List every destination. Record whether each use is a site card, YouTube video, Shorts frame, feed post, Story/Reel, link preview or pin.
- Group by ratio. Create master canvases for 16:9, 9:16, 4:5, 1:1, 1.91:1 and 2:3 only when your placements require them.
- Place the subject centrally. Leave breathing room near edges so a platform crop or interface overlay does not remove the message.
- Export at the target dimensions. Do not enlarge a small source to meet a nominal pixel count; start from a sufficiently detailed original.
- Review real previews. Check desktop and mobile views, dark and light interfaces where relevant, and any automatic crop.
- Keep an editable master. Save the layered or high-resolution original, then generate compressed delivery files per placement.
Generating a website thumbnail from a live page
If your “thumbnail” is a screenshot of a webpage, a browser gives you control over viewport, device scale, lazy loading and CSS. For a repeatable result, set the viewport to the intended card ratio, wait for the page to finish loading, hide cookie dialogs and capture the relevant element rather than the entire browser window.

Browser checklist
- Use a fixed viewport matching the destination ratio.
- Wait for a key selector or network idle so fonts and images are present.
- Scroll or trigger lazy-loaded images before capture when the page needs them.
- Dismiss consent banners and close chat or newsletter overlays.
- Capture the card element with a CSS selector when only one component is needed.
- Review the result at the final display width; tiny text in a full-page screenshot will not become readable after scaling.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Every plan includes the feature set: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.

Quality, performance and cost decisions
Resolution versus delivery weight
Keep a high-resolution master, but deliver only the dimensions the placement needs. A very large image can slow card grids and social sharing without improving the rendered result. Generate separate derivatives rather than forcing browsers to downscale one oversized file everywhere.

Caching and freshness
Social networks and browsers cache preview images. Use a new, versioned image URL when a deliberate replacement must propagate, while keeping ordinary thumbnail URLs stable for crawlability and cache efficiency. ScreenshotNeo lets you choose a cache TTL; select a longer TTL for immutable pages and a shorter one for frequently changing content.
Automation at scale
For many URLs, asynchronous jobs, signed webhooks and bulk capture (up to 100 URLs per call) avoid holding a request open for every page. Record the source URL, viewport, ratio, timestamp and output format with each asset so a later rebuild is reproducible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
The image is cropped badly
Cause: the source ratio does not match the placement. Fix: create a placement-specific crop, move essential content toward the center and inspect the platform’s mobile preview.
Text is unreadable
Cause: text was designed on a large master and reduced into a small card. Fix: shorten the headline, increase contrast and test at the actual rendered width.
A social card shows an old image
Cause: crawler or platform caching. Fix: confirm the metadata points to the intended stable URL, then allow cache refresh; use a versioned URL for a deliberate replacement.

Google does not show a video thumbnail
Cause: the thumbnail URL is inaccessible to Googlebot or Googlebot Images, or the page lacks valid video metadata. Fix: make the image publicly fetchable, keep URLs consistent and follow Google’s video metadata guidance.
The screenshot contains a popup or blank area
Cause: the page was captured before consent handling, overlay dismissal or required content loading. Fix: add selector, delay or network-idle waits, trigger lazy loading and hide unwanted selectors. ScreenshotNeo can handle known consent platforms and reports failed or blank captures without billing them.
A practical decision rule
When two proposed sizes compete, compare the placement first, then aspect ratio, minimum versus recommended resolution, file type and size limits, crop and safe areas, and whether the platform uploads the file or fetches a URL from metadata. If those facts are not documented by the platform, label the value as a working reference rather than an official requirement.
